LO3 - Evaluation

Weekly blog updates are required, as with every unit. Please remember to
take photos/screenshots as you film/edit. You might find it easier if you note
down a record of what you did each day in a diary form.

Please use the following guidance to help you with each week.

LO1 This learning objective was researching target

audiences
What have you been asked to For this project we were asked to create a piece of
do? media in the style of a documentary that met the
needs of three separate target audiences. It had to
have aspects that appealed to all three while
simultaneously not displeasing each age category.
How has researching target Researching target audience has developed my
audiences developed your understanding of not only what different age groups
understanding? enjoy watching but also the way in which they
consume media. I now understand that stereotypes
are still strong within older generations and something
to elaborative or ‘offensive’ is still off-putting to these
groups of people regardless of how times are
changing for young people, therefore if you want to
make a product that appeals to them you have to
make sacrifices to things you would like to include.
How has analysing primary Analysing primary research such as focus groups and
research allowed you to my survey really helped me create a deeper
understand the requirements of understanding of the age groups I am trying to target.
It helped me understand more about how and why
your target audience?
they consume media in the way they do. It also
helped me understand different age groups to the
ones I would usually choose to target and therefore
this has expanded my knowledge so in future
productions I can choose a wider range of target
audiences and already have relative knowledge of
how to please that audience. I also learnt what goes
into creating something that can appeal to more
than one age group, there are rarely similarities in their
buying/media habits and therefore you have to figure
out a way to suit all of those simultaneously.
How has analysing secondary Analysing secondary research has helped me create
research allowed you to a better understanding of documentaries that suit the
understand the requirements of age groups I need to target. Analysing videos of
productions similar to the one I want to make has
your target audience?
helped me understand what physical elements a
production requires in order to meet the needs of
these audiences. I found that younger generation
liked presenter led as did others and across the board
everyone deemed mental health as important. I
analysed some presenter led mental health
documentaries and this showed me what is necessary
to create a successful product of this type.
How effective was your research? I believe my research was generally quite effective,
this is because it expanded my knowledge in a way
that is useful to me and will help me create a better
end product. I think my survey could have been
slightly more in depth however I do have all the
necessary data in order to create something that has
aspects that every age group chose as well as having
some specific elements that meet the needs of some
better than others but still don’t displease the other
audiences.
What problems did you I didn’t encounter many problems when researching
encounter with the research besides focus groups and surveys. For focus groups I
process? initially interviewed people outside of the audiences I
am trying to target therefore the information I
collected wasn’t overly effective and I had to re do
these in order to collect results that were useful
towards my work. When I sent my survey out I was
hoping for at least 50 responses, however it was
considerably difficult to get these as lots of the people
that I was trying to collect data from didn’t want to
take the survey and I only had a short window of time
to collect responses, however if I had been more
prepared sooner then I could’ve reached more
people and thus had more responses.
What have you done to To overcome these issues I have used the data that I
overcome these issues? have to the best of my ability, if less 50 year olds took
the survey I made sure to include the elements that
the few of them said, whereas within the younger
categories answers varied so it meant I could look
and choose what the majority said.
How effectively did you present I presented my findings in a neat and concise way. I
your findings? think this was relatively effective because it meant all
the information I needed was easy to find and easy to
comprehend. This also made it easy to go back to
and evaluate because everything was displayed
clearly.
What will you implement into your From my research I will implement multiple features
production from the research into my production. The first of those being a
undertaken? presenter led style production, I will include this
because in my survey the majority style chosen across
all age groups was a presenter led style of
documentary, however voice of god style films were
also up there so I will include some elements of this.
Another thing I will include is high quality cinematic
shots and b roll. This was widely valued as important
by the people that took my survey therefore it is what
the target audience want to see. I will also be doing a
production based around mental health, when I
asked what social issue people wanted to see a
documentary on this was the most popular choice
across all age groups, it was also ranked across age
groups as one of the most important social issues.
High Grade Tips

Look to use these terms in order to improve the analysis of your own work.
Relevant and coherent – make sure your research sources are not just the same as the
media product you hope to make and talk about how they inform your planning.
Sustained – continue your research throughout the project and don’t just limit yourself.
Efficient production against timescales – how is your planning helping you to meet your
deadline.
