Ap Human Geography CH. 9 Questions Key Issue 3

Pg.318- One principal form of subsistence agricultre in lower-density dry regions would be
pastoral nomadism. Pastoral nomadism is based on the herdings of domesticated animals and are
found in the dry lands of Southwest Asia and North Africa, Central Asia, and East Asia. Farmers
herd animals when the land is dry.

Pg. 320- The principal form of subsistence agriculture in lower-density tropical regions would be
shifting culitvation. Shifting cultivation have high temperatures and abundant rainfall. It is
practiced in the forests of Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia. Plantation
farming is also found. Developing countries see shifting cultivation as an inefficient way to grow
food. Compared to other forms of agriculture, shifting cultivation can support only a small
population in an area without causing environmental damage. Many people consider shifting
agriculture to be the most environmentally sound approach for agriculture in the tropics. Slash-
and-burn agriculture is a shifting cultivation method and is used when farmers clear land for
planting by slashing vegetation and burning the debris.

Pg. 321- It is difficult to practice shifting cultivation in places like sub-Saharan Africa because
shift cultivation is best used when there is a small population and since the population is growing,
it’s hard and more people means it won’t be as environmentally sound.

Pg. 322- The principal form of agriculture in high-density developing regions is intensive
subsistence agriculture. Intensive subsistence agriculture has to do with the fact that farmers must
work intensively to subsist on a parcel of land. Since the food is created for consumption by the
farmer’s family, it works with high-density developing regions. This means that a greater amount
of food would have to be produced to sustain the community.

Pg. 323- Some challenges for the farmers of East and South Asia would be depending their farming
on technology. They would also need to grow a large amount of the cash crop for all the people.
Growing rice involves field preperation, flooding, transportation, and harvesting. If they would
want to use mechanical farming and incorporate the use of technology they would need to spend
a lot of energy, money, and time. This also depends on climate too.

Pg. 324 – Expanind fish exports would allow for more consumption. It has increased by 27 million
tons in 1960 and 110 million tons in 2010. Fish is found as an important component of a
Mediterranean U.S. resident’s diet. Fish can be hunted either by capturing them in lakes and rivers
or using aquaculture. That is, the cultivation of seafood under controlled conditions.

Pg 325- It might be lower than the average amount of eating fish just because many developed
countries like the US rely on their top cash crops: wheat, rice, potatoes, and corn. For example, I
like to eat sushi at least once a week, Sushi contains a balance of fish and carbohydrates. I would
either eat more carbohydrates or eat more protein just because parts of the US are Mediterranean.
