THE 1968 GATE
Wingate College
Wingate, North Carolina
It is our hope to recreate in the

Gate the life we live at Wingate Col-

lege. The theme, a total experience,
attempts to put into the mind of the
student the many experiences that
he has had during the past year.
Try to recall that first day of regis-
tration; the confusion, the new faces
you wondered how you would ever
identify. You may recall wondering
why you even decided to come to
Wingate; then think of the reasons
you selected Wingate to be your col-
lege.
There are many different reasons.
Each has his own, but it is for all
of us a year of development and
growth, growth in knowledge com-
bined with frustration and achieve-
ment, but a totally new experience.

PEOPLE ACTIVITIES ACADEMICS

A TOTAL EXPERIENCE

mm
THE RACE BEGAN

-~"3&g3Sb
AND THE PACE WAS KEPT

Classes and activities brought

upon us an avalanche of laughterand
dismay. We were found being forced
to take what was handed to us. and
we had to keep up with the other
1600 students or fall behind and not
be counted. A race had begun that
was affecting our lives and future.
We were all confused those first
few days, all trying to adjust to this
new way of life. Would we ever feel
at home or contented? Our minds
pondered this question and in the
passing of time, it was answered
without our awareness.
Sixteen hundred individual per-
sonalities are brought together. Here
lie the ideas, questions, and answers
for the future. Some are sincere,
some sensible, and others whimsi-
cal. As the foundation of an idea is
laid, the discussion of it brings out
the personality of each individual
who participates.
Not only knowledge and questions
came from the classroom, but self-
confidence in our individual ideas.
As our self-confidence improved, our
individuality grew.

ACQUAINTANCES, FRIENDS
m^t Pie t^^mmKm

In the classroom, in the hall, in

the rec, in the cafeteria, but most

of all in the dorm, we are drawn
closer together as we
each talk with
other. A common ordinary face with
no feeling becomes a welcome sight
as we learn the personality behind
it. Our small and limited worlds
broaden, and we become part of an
expanding world with each other.
These new acquaintances develop
into lasting friendships and we are
no longer alone, but are caught in
the maze of a new society.

LASTING RELATIONSHIPS

* m

There comes a time to break away

from some of the old ties at home
and form new ones in the world of
the young adult. The college experi-
ence is incomplete without the new
relationships which develop from
chance or planned meetings. Each
person is an individual who becomes
incorporated into the campus amal-
gam. Singles join to become couples
in the ritual of campus romance.
Some relationships were brief,

others will last forever.

EVOLVED

,3S,V<
SELF EXPRESSION, EXAMINATION
AND EXPANSION

There is a creative part within

each of us that needs to be devel-
oped and displayed. The worlds of
art, music, drama, and crafts provide

such a facility for this desire. All

we have to do is to allow our creative

inclinations to emerge, and they will
have the stimulus to develop. When
we have allowed such latent feelings
to be born, we become more com-
plete human beings in this infinite
universe.
SOCCER WAS BORN

Soccer became another first at

Wingate and with it came revitalized
spirit which emerged with every new
chance to display it. For their work
and spirit, we salute Wingate's first
soccer team.
The spirit of the student body was
displayed during the "W" Club and
Faculty basketball game. We enjoyed
and appreciated witnessing our in-
structors on this level, cheering for
them as well as for the boys.
AND SPIRIT REVIVED
DEDICATION
In recognition of his devoted service to

Wingate College and in sincere appreciation

for his understanding of the students, we
dedicate this 1968 Volume of the Gate to
Mr. Henry Harry Sherwood, Professor of
Geography, Director of Housing, and Assis-
tant Dean of Men.

Mr. Henry Harry Sherwood.

THE BIRTH OF UNDERSTANDING
AND MEANING FOR THE FUTURE

the midst of the busy, crowded

In

college life, there is still time to be

alone, to think. As our horizons ex-

pand we think about the future,
about life. moments become
Quiet
happy ones as we remember those
back home. We become sad as we
face the fact that we can never really
go back, but only forward.
We work, we
learn, we exchange
ideas, we we struggle, we cry,
love,
we laugh, and we reminisce, but we
are never really alone in this new
world at Wingate College, 1967-68;
we are a part of it, individuals in
the whole of it.

l^B^B

Dr. Budd E. Smith, President of

Wingate College, came to Wingate
in 1955, with the purpose of expand-

ing the college both academically

and physically. New professors, new
courses and new facilities, especially
buildings and laboratories, have
been added to augment the oppor-
tunities already available to stu-
dents. With his botanical ability, Dr.
Smith has made the entire campus
a "thing of beauty."
The physical appearance of the
college is rapidly changing. In addi-
tion to the newest men's dormitory,
Lester Lee Helms; the Burnside-Dal-
ton Fine Arts Center; and Laney Hall,
a golf course is being constructed.
Dr. Smith and his energetic wife
are both admired and respected by
the student body for the interest they
Dr. and Mrs. Smith welcome incoming students.
show not only in the academic col-
lege life but also in the extra-curric-
22
ular activities and
in the general
welfare of the students. Wingate is
indeed fortunate to have them both.
