Astro 7.15 - Telephony

Training Objectives:

• Telephony Sub-System architecture implemented in Astro 7.17

• Basic Concepts , Diagrams , and Major Elements.

2
Astro 7.15 - Telephony

Structure:

• The Telephony sub-system enables the MS unit to connect a Public or a

private system Telephone network to the Astro System.

• The above enables the MS user to initiate a “LAND to MOBILE” and

“MOBILE to LAND” telephone calls by using the Astro Subscriber Radio.

• The sub-System is named ETI (Enhanced Telephone Interconnect).

3
• ETI – Enhanced Telephone Interconnect

The Astro Based telephony system is "Voice over

IP " (VoIP) based.

Telephony is Based on the Following Servers:

1. TMG - Telephone Media Gateway

2. PABX - NEC Sphericall System
3. Firewall – Optional
• ETI – Enhanced Telephone Interconnect
Enhanced Telephone Interconnect – ETI •

Telephone interconnect can be attached

to a customer Ethernet IP Based PABX
(Firewall is recommended)

Telephone interconnect can be attached

to a customer E1 / PRI Based PABX
Enhanced Telephone Interconnect – ETI

• The TMG (Telephone Media Gateway ) is the VPM device from the MCC Dispatcher (with a
different operating configuration)

• It converts the ASTRO protocol ( AMBE ) to the IP PBX G.711 protocol.

• The TMG can be encrypted via KVL and can be controlled from the KMF – this will allow
encrypted phone call .
ETI – Enhanced Telephone Interconnect

• The IP PBX is a DELL Power Edge 610c Server.

• The server also known as NEC Spherical Manager for the name of the application running
on it

• Performs call control and administrative operations, as well as configuration activities

carried out through it.

• Communicates the TMG via a Firewall (in IP Telephony based systems).

ETI – Enhanced Telephone Interconnect

• The Branch HUB Media Gateway is the phone lines (PSTN) connecting device when
using Analog lines (FXO/S).

• The Co Branch HUB Media Gateway is the phone lines (PSTN) connecting device when
using E1 based line.
ETI – Enhanced Telephone Interconnect

• The telephony system enables phone calls to be made in the

system, on the infrastructure of the system's sites.
• Phone calls can be performed from a MS to a land
line and vice versa.
• The calls are conducted using the half-duplex method.

• The ETI uses E1 and can manage up to 4000 MS.

• The ability to maintain up to 120 telephony calls simultaneously

in the system.
• Telephone calls will also continue to exist in transit / roaming
between sites.
ETI – Enhanced Telephone Interconnect

• A MS must be enabled in the PM to telephony (Interconnect

Enabled=Yes) in order to perform and receive a phone call.

• Here are the ways to initiate and receive a call:

• In order to initiate a phone call from the MS, you only need to
dial the phone number.

• In MS browse to the phone option and than dial the required

phone number.
ETI – Enhanced Telephone Interconnect

• In order to make a phone call to a MS, you

need to dial the phone number which is
connected to the server.
• A voice menu will ask you to enter the MS Id
and than to press #.
• The call will be directed to the MS.
• In the MS a “Phone Call” message will appear
on the screen.
SO, what we’ve learned?
• We’ve learned the telephony architecture
in the system
• We’ve learned the key components of
telephony and their roles.
• We’ve learned the components of the
telephony system.
