## Course Instructor: Dr Shanthakumar G C Max Marks: 50

Instructions:

Answer any Five full questions, All questions carry equal Marks

1. From the generalized Hook’s law for a material Explain how 81 constants are reduced
to 21 constants.
2. When the stress tensor at a point with reference to axes (x, y, z) is given by the array
𝟒 𝟏 𝟐
[𝟏 𝟔 𝟎] MPa. Show that the stress invariants are unchanged by the transformation
𝟐 𝟎 𝟖
of axes by 450 about the z-axis.
3. A gear with a shaft is used to transmit the power as shown in figure 1. The load at the
gear tooth is 1kN. The diameter of the gear and the shaft are 40 mm and 20 mm
respectively. Find the principal stresses and the maximum shear stress on an element,
which you feel important on the shaft. [Knowledge of torsion and bending is
necessary]

## 4. Data taken from a 450 strain rosette reads as follows:

ϵ0=750 micrometres/m
ϵ45= -110 micrometres/m
ϵ90=210 micrometres/m
Find the magnitudes and directions of principal strains.

## 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝟏𝟔𝟎 −𝟏𝟐𝟎

5. The stress tensor at appoint is given by [ 𝟏𝟔𝟎 −𝟐𝟒𝟎 𝟏𝟎𝟎 ] KPa. Determine the
−𝟏𝟐𝟎 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝟏𝟔𝟎
strain tensor at this point. Take E=210 x 10 kN/m and ν =0.3

6. Determine the stresses by using Inverse method for a cantilever beam of narrow
rectangular cross section carrying a load P as shown in Figure 2

## With the boundary condition

And the applied load P must be equal to the resultant of the shearing forces distributed across
the free end and P is given by

7. The circular link shown in Figure 3 has a circular cross-section 3cm in diameter The inside
diameter of the ring is 4cm. The load P is 1000 kg. Calculate the stress at A and B. Compare
the values with those found by the straight beam formula. Assume that the material is not
stressed above its elastic strength. Take c= 1.5 cm
