PRODUCT WARRANTY
IEC’s warranty obligations are limited to the terms set forth below:
IEC warrants its IEC-branded product against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for
a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of purchase by the original end-user purchaser (“Warranty
Period”). If a warrantee defect arises within the Warranty Period, at its option, IEC will either (1) repair
the defect at no charge, using new or refurbished replacement parts, or (2) exchange the product with a
product that is new or which has been manufactured from new or serviceable used parts and is at least
functionally equivalent to the original product, or (3) refund the purchase price of the product. A
replacement product or part, including a user-installable part that has been installed in accordance with
instructions provided by IEC, assumes the remaining warranty of the original product or ninety (90) days
from the date of replacement or repair, whichever provides longer coverage for the customer. When a
product or part is exchanged, any replacement item becomes customer’s property and the replaced item
becomes IEC's property. Parts provided by IEC in fulfillment of its warranty obligation must be used in
products for which warranty service is claimed. When a refund is given, the product for which the refund
is provided must be returned to IEC and becomes IEC's property.
The standard warranty on all materials supplied by IEC Infrared Systems is one year from date of
delivery. However, an initial (pre-installation) checkout (i.e., bench top test) of all systems must be
done by customer prior to installation in order to validate this warranty. This bench top test of
these systems is to confirm that all equipment is in proper working order BEFORE installation
commences and should be carried out within 3 weeks of delivery of the systems. IEC Infrared
Systems is not responsible for damage done to any products during shipping or installation.
If any items are found to be defective or inoperative due to materials or workmanship defects, IEC
Infrared Systems will (at its discretion) either repair or replace the defective item for a period of one year
from the date of delivery. The customer is responsible for dismounting the defective system and shipping
it to IEC Infrared Systems (for evaluation and repair), and for re-mounting it after the repairs are
completed. Failures due to improper installation, improper use or circumstances beyond manufacturer’s
control (e.g., blast damage from flying debris or shrapnel or other battle damage, overpressure loading
beyond the design limits, lightning strikes, or other conditions) are not covered by this warranty and
remain the customer’s responsibility.

EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS

This Limited Warranty applies only to products manufactured by or for IEC. IEC does not warrant that
the operation of the product will be uninterrupted or error-free. IEC is not responsible for damage arising
from failure to follow instructions relating to the product's use.

IntrudIR Alert Middleware

IntrudIR Alert® middleware is designed to be controlled by a single user, using a simple but flexible PC
interface, along with a rugged hand-controller. This interface allows the user to operate and monitor all
system functionality, including selection of scan area (for long range panoramic imaging), alarm regions
and direct control of the long range/assessment imaging payload. Any given region can be expanded and
examined by simply ‘clicking’ on the appropriate area of the panoramic image; target tracking can also be
initiated in a similar way. With optional laser range finders, the system will provide MGRS coordinates
of selected targets; targets are displayed on both the panoramic image, and on a geo-referenced overhead
map display, providing an easy to understand representation of the data. Data can be recorded, logged,
and replayed, and alarming/tracking data can be both sent to or received from external sensor systems.
The system provides highly programmable control of the imaging system, target geo-location, and
panoramic imaging functionality. Ground radars, UGS, additional imaging sensors along with just about
any published command and control protocol can be integrated seamlessly into the IntrudIR Alert ®
architecture. One copy of IntrudIR Alert® will be supplied for fixed site applications (PC to be supplied
by the Customer). IntrudIR Alert will be supplied with upgrades at no charge for (1) one year from date
of delivery. Any future sensor integration will be at no charge if sensors have previously been integrated
by IEC. New sensor integration requiring development costs will be quoted as needed.

Processed and raw video outputs from the imaging system can be sent to an external monitor using BNC-
RCA cables (PN: E000034-L010) from the VIDEO OUT 1 and 2 respectively.

The 100ft RADAR cable can be connected to the RADAR INTERFACE connector on the ETM (if
applicable)

The Ethernet cable (PN: V000127-L010) connects between one of the IP Interface ports to a PC interface
or to a router for a network system.

The Serial Cable (PN: E000031-L010) female end can be connected to the SERIAL INTERFACE
connector of the Ethernet Transmitter Module.

Important: The serial cable acts as a power switch for the system. The system cannot be
powered unless a serial cable is connected to the Interface Box. If the system is powered,
disconnecting the serial cable from the Interface Box will disable the system.
Reconnecting the serial cable to the interface box, if all other cables are connected and
power is still applied, will power the system and perform its initial homing routine.
M1-Werewolf 14-07 Imaging System 17
Setup Guide and User Manual

As a precaution, the male end of the Serial Cable will be used to connect to the Interface Module SERIAL
1 or 2 connector during power up, after final inspection of system connections is completed.

Note if both the Serial Hand Controller (SHC) and the ETM-R are connected to the Interface Module with
their respective serial cables, once the system is powered on, the user can interact with the Imaging
System using the SHC even though the power switch is in the off position, the Power LED will be On.

Power Supply

Important: At this time, the power supply switch should be verified in the OFF position
before connecting power cables to the control electronics.

The Power Supply (PN: E000037-V002) provides up to 1500W of power at 30 VDC to the
imaging system and Radar Unit.

The DC power cables from the power supply can be connected to the INPUT POWER connector on the
Interface Module as well as the POWER connector on the Ethernet Transmitter Module.

Final Inspection and Power

At this time, the installer should verify that all connections, except the 10ft serial cable, have been
connected according to the Fixed Site Configuration document in Appendix A. Care should be taken so
that the cables are not bent at severe angles or kinked during installation or after. Cables should be routed
and secured to prevent stress to the connector and cable ends after installation, and should not be used to
support the weight of other user provided cables. The cables should be routed in such a manner as to not
cause obstructions for the imager while in motion or for personnel.

Ensure that the Imager, payloads, and RADAR and all associated electronics enclosures are securely
fastened to a suitable work surface. The system performs a homing routine once power is applied and
care should be taken to ensure a clear operating envelope.

Once satisfied that all connections have been made, power can be applied to the system. Using the 10ft
serial MIL x MIL cable, connect the male end to the Interface Module. After plugging in the power
supply to the appropriate power source, apply power to the system by turning the power supply switch on
which will power up the system and begin the homing routine.

Once the homing routine has finished, the system will be available for use. Note: the Thermal Camera
will require a short time to cooldown and initialize before a thermal image is accessible.

IP Addressing
Certain devices within the M1-Werewolf 14-07 Imaging System use Ethernet communications for data
and video transfer. As such, each device is required to have a unique IP Address. For any devices that
uses IP Addressing, a label with the factory set IP Address (as well as an area for the end user to denote a
different IP Address if they change it) will be attached to the device. The end user can use a permanent
marker to indicate the new IP Address on the label for documentation and record keeping. This can be
washed off with isopropyl alcohol.

If any device network IP addressing maintenance is required or issues should be encountered, please
contact IEC Infrared Systems Customer Service for assistance. Please keep a record of assigned IP
addresses for each device.

External Bore Sighting

The Secondary Payload is equipped with the ability to allow the end user to co-align the optical axis to
the primary payload using external azimuth and elevation adjustment control hardware mounted on the
Secondary Payload blind mate flange. During initial setup of the system or to fine tune changes to the
system, please refer to the WereWolf External Boresight Procedure Manual to make the necessary
adjustments.

Radar Alignment (if configured)

During the set-up process, in order to rely on the data being provided by the system, a RADAR
alignment procedure should be completed with each RADAR and imager. Refer to the Radar
Alignment Procedure Manual.

System Operation
The following sections describe operation of the system using the hand controller. Some systems do not
ship with hand controllers for local use. For systems using IntrudIR Alert, please reference the M1-
Werewolf Imaging System IntrudIR Alert User Manual. All operations described below can be done
using the IntrudIR Alert software interface.

Serial Hand Controller

The user should become familiar with the Serial Hand Controller interface.

Setup Guide and User Manual

Camera Movement
Manual Motion
The movement of the camera head is controlled using the joystick on the hand controller. Pushing the
joystick causes the imager to move in the direction indicated. Moving it forward causes the camera to tilt
up, while moving it back causes the camera to tilt down. Similarly, pushing the joystick to the left will
pan the camera head counterclockwise, and pushing the joystick right will pan the camera clockwise.
The speed at which the imager moves is proportional to how far the joystick is moved; full deflection of
the joystick will cause the imager to move in that direction at its greatest possible speed, while smaller
deflections will cause the imager to move at slower speeds.
Note that pan and tilt motions can be made simultaneously by moving the joystick at angles other than
directly forward/backward or left/right. For example, moving the joystick both left and forward causes
the imager to simultaneously rotate counterclockwise and to tilt upward.

Setup Guide and User Manual

Automatic Motion
The camera can automatically pan between two positions using the auto-pan function.

Auto-Pan Left and Right Limits

To set the limits of the auto-pan motion, first turn the function dial to Left Limit, rotate the camera to the
desired position using the joystick, and then press and HOLD the Set button. As indicated by the on
screen display, the position will be set after the Set button has been held for 3 seconds. The text “Left
Limit Set” will appear on screen.
Next, turn the function dial to Right Limit, rotate the camera to the right until it reaches the desired
position, and then press and HOLD the Set button. As indicated by the on screen display, the position
will be set after the Set button has been held for 3 seconds. The text “Right Limit Set” will appear on
screen.
Either limit may be set first. The system allows both “Auto Pan” mode and “Auto Pan/Tilt” mode; the
system ships with the “Auto Pan” mode enabled. To change the Auto Scan mode to “Auto Pan/Tilt”,
which allows the user to set both left and right limits with a corresponding azimuth and elevation, the user
must select that feature through the On Screen menu, covered later in this document.

NOTE: YOU MUST ROTATE THE CAMERA THROUGH THE SAME PATH YOU WISH
TO USE FOR THE AUTO-PAN MOTION. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU SET THE LEFT LIMIT
FIRST, YOU MUST ROTATE THE CAMERA TO THE RIGHT IN ORDER TO SET THE
RIGHT LIMIT. THUS, IF YOU WISH THE CAMERA TO AUTO-PAN 360 DEGREES, YOU
MUST MANUALLY ROTATE THE CAMERA THE FULL 360 DEGREES. FAILURE TO
DO SO WILL RESULT IN THE MESSAGE “INVALID LIMITS” WHEN STARTING AUTO-
PAN.

Auto-Pan Start and Stop

Once both limits are set, turn the function dial to Auto Pan. Press the Set button to begin panning. The
camera will continue to cycle between the two limits until the. To stop the Auto Pan sequence, press the
Set button again. Alternatively, any joystick motion will halt auto-panning, returning manual control to
the operator. At that point the text “Auto-Pan Off” will appear on screen.
NOTE: If you enter the on screen display while the camera is auto-panning, the auto-pan will
stop. However, the right and left limits are not discarded, so auto-pan can be resumed by exiting
the on screen display, selecting the Auto Pan function, and pressing the Set button.

Auto-Pan Speed Adjustment

The camera speed can be adjusted when auto-pan has been started. Perform the following steps:
 The Function dial should be rotated to Auto Pan.
 The user must press and HOLD the Set button.
 The Auto Pan speed % will display in the upper left corner of the video stream.
 Move the joystick up/right to increase the speed at which the imager is moving.
 Move the joystick down/left to decrease the speed at which the imager is moving.
 The system will display the corresponding Auto Pan Speed percentage.
Once the Set button is released, the camera keeps auto-panning at the speed selected.
M1-Werewolf 14-07 Imaging System 21

The camera speed cannot be adjusted once the Set button is released.

Go to Left Limit or Right Limit

Once the left and right limits have been set, the user can instruct the camera to move to either
those established positions by moving the function dial to Left Limit or Right Limit then pressing
the Set button. This will move the camera to the appropriate established limit.

Home Position Set

If Home is selected on the function dial and the Set button is pressed and HELD for three seconds, as
indicated by the on screen display, the pan and tilt positions are reset to zero.

Go to Home Position
Once the Home Position has been set, the user can instruct the camera to move to that position
by moving the function dial to the Home setting, then pressing the Set button. This will move
the camera to the Home Position at maximum speed.

IR Camera Settings
Infrared Camera Selection
To select the infrared camera as the primary video source, toggle the Video switch to the Infrared
position.

Continuous Digital Zoom

The IR video imager can be digitally zoomed using the Zoom switch on the hand controller.
Whenever the Zoom switch is moved toward the In position, the magnification increases. By moving the
Zoom switch toward the Out position, the magnification decreases. The relative zoom values are
indicated on the screen in the lower left corner, from 1.0x to 12.0x zoom.
Larger zoom values provide a digitally magnified image of the target (that is, the target appears larger on
the viewing monitor), while zoom 1.0X gives the standard magnification.

IR Optical Zoom
The IR video Imager can provide continuous optical zoom by changing the lens focal length using the
Field of View (FOV) switch. To optically zoom in on a target, move the FOV switch towards Narrow.
To optically zoom out and display more of the field of view, move the FOV switch towards Wide.

Focus
The focus setting can be changed by activating and holding the Focus switch on the hand controller in the
appropriate direction (either Near or Far) until the desired focus is achieved.

Polarity
The Polarity switch on the hand controller determines whether light or dark shades are used for either
warm or cool objects. Using the gray scale color palette, the White Hot setting will cause the warmer
objects to appear as lighter shades of gray in the image, while the cool objects will appear as darker
M1-Werewolf 14-07 Imaging System 22
Setup Guide and User Manual

shades of gray. The Black Hot setting simply inverts this, so the warm objects will appear darker and the
cool objects appear lighter. The polarity may be reversed in conjunction with the different color palettes
that are available; this will invert the color palettes described in the colorization section below.

Auto/Manual Settings
When the Settings switch on the hand controller is in the Auto position, the gain and level settings will be
automatically optimized by the camera itself. When in the Manual position, the gain and level settings can
be adjusted manually.

Gain/Level
When the Settings switch is set to Manual, the gain and level of the IR image can be adjusted using the
Gain and FSN Thresh/ Level switches on the hand controller. Gain controls the contrast of the image.
Level controls the brightness of the image.
Note that increasing the Level increases the amount of white or bright colors in the image, and decreasing
Level makes the image darker, regardless of whether the Polarity is in White Hot or Black Hot mode.

Colorization
The IR camera presents an image which shows the intensity of the thermal scene in gray scale. However,
the image can be enhanced with user-selectable colorization schemes. There are five palettes available:
 Gray Scale (no colorization)
 Green
 Yellow
 Rainbow
 Gray to Red
Furthermore, each of these palettes may be reversed using the Polarity function described above.

Grayscale Green Amber Iron Gray to Red

To access the palettes with the hand controller, set the selector dial to Color. Then use the Set button to
cycle through the palettes. To return to Gray Scale, the user may either continue to press the Set button to
cycle through the palettes, or press and HOLD the Set button.

Visual Imaging
The M1-Werewolf Thermal/Visual Imaging System includes a color visual camera equipped with both
26X optical zoom, and 12X digital zoom (312X total zoom). This camera operates similar to standard
video cameras, and it is useful during daytime or in well-lit areas.
Additionally, if equipped, the M1-Werewolf Thermal/Visual Imaging System includes an image
intensified color camera with 4x zoom.
To select the visual camera as the primary visual source, toggle the Video switch to the Visual position.
By rotating the function switch to Visual Mode, the user will be able to use additional visual camera
functions as described below.

Visual Zoom
The hand controller can be used to change the zoom of the visual camera. With visual mode selected, the
zoom of the visual camera can then be adjusted using the Zoom switch. Digital zoom is automatically

Auto/Manual Settings
When the Settings switch on the hand controller is in the Auto position, the gain and level and focus
settings will be automatically optimized by the camera itself. When in the Manual position, the gain and
level settings can be adjusted manually.

Gain/Level
When the Settings switch is set to Manual, the gain and level of the visual image can be adjusted using
the Gain and FSN Thresh/ Level switches on the hand controller. Gain controls the contrast of the image.
Level controls the brightness of the image.
Note that increasing the Level increases the amount of white or bright colors in the image, and decreasing
Level makes the image darker.

Visual Focus
When the Settings switch is set to Manual, the hand controller can be used to adjust the focus of the visual
camera. Use the Focus switch to adjust the focus. The user may find the use of this feature helpful when
viewing an image that contains objects at various distances or in low-light conditions.

Visual Camera Low Light Mode

The user may toggle the day camera between normal and low-light modes. To switch modes, rotate the
function dial to the Visual Mode selection, then press the Set button. In normal mode, the day camera will
produce color video, while in low-light mode, the camera’s video will be black and white. This feature
may also be enabled by using the On Screen Menu.

Image Intensified Camera Selection (If Configured)

To enable the image intensified camera, rotate the selector switch to the Visual Mode selection, then
HOLD the Set button. Image intensified video may be identified by the monochrome green imagery. The
Image Intensified Camera relies on a light cut-off switch to prevent it from operating in areas where there
is excessive ambient light. Repeating the process will disable the Image Intensified camera, returning to
the selection of the day camera.
Note: If the light cut-off switch detects an excessive amount of ambient light, the video source will
automatically switch to Infrared and the text “Photosensor Overload” will appear on screen.
IMPORTANT: The image intensifier is extremely sensitive to light and should only be
used in low-light conditions where night-vision goggles are appropriate. A light cut-off
sensor on the front face prevents operation of the intensifier in conditions of bright light.
Do not cover or otherwise block this sensor, or damage to the night vision camera could
occur. Damage may still occur if image intensifier if suddenly exposed to bright, direct
illumination or if a bright, distant light source remains static, for even short periods of
time, in the field of view. When operating the system with the image intensifier enabled,
keep the imager moving so bright light sources do not affect one area of the tube for
prolonged periods of time. Additionally, when illuminators are used, they should only be
used for brief periods of time so as to not damage the image intensifier.

Target Range Estimation

Passive Range Scale
The Passive Range Scale feature can be used to estimate a target’s distance using stadiometry. In order to
use this feature, Infrared must be selected as the primary video source. The Passive Range Scale is
displayed by turning the function dial on the hand controller to RNG. Pressing the Set button brings up a
vertical scale on the image. Pressing the Set button again removes the passive range scale.
The vertical scale allows users to estimate the range from the camera to a target. The range estimate
assumes that the target is 6 feet tall (or that a 6 foot height may be distinguished relative to the target).
Adjust the camera position so the bottom of the target lines up with the bottom of the range scale.
To estimate a target’s range, enable the range scale, then press and HOLD the Set button. Use the
joystick to fit the estimation bars to the target (or a 6' vertical estimation of the target). Estimated range
and error are displayed on the top left portion of the screen. Note that this feature requires selection of the
IR camera, and that digital zoom of the IR camera is accounted for.

Video Output Selection

The M1-Werewolf Thermal/Visual Imaging System allows the user to toggle between two different types
of video outputs, Composite and VGA as desired. The system ships with the composite video output
enabled.
In this arrangement, the “Video 1” BNC connector outputs the primary, processed video as selected on
the Hand Controller. The “Video 2” BNC connector outputs a raw video stream, opposite of what is
selected as the primary video source. For example, if the thermal camera is selected via the Hand
Controller, then the visual camera output will be displayed as a raw video stream on “Video 2”. In this
mode, the VGA connector will not output video.
When the user selects VGA as the primary video output, then all of the processed video is output to the
VGA connector. The “Video 1” BNC outputs the unprocessed thermal image, and the “Video 2” BNC
outputs the unprocessed visual image.
To toggle between the two modes of video outputs, the user must perform a unique Hand Controller
command designed to prevent accidental switching of modes as follows:
 Rotate the video display Mode selector dial to two clicks CCW from STAB Mode. The dial
position will not be pointing at a label but will be blank.
 Rotate the Function selector dial to the Visual Mode position
 The display should show “VipIR Adjust Mode”.

elevation will be maintained throughout the auto pan. This option should be selected if
the user does not desire changes in elevation.
 Auto Pan/Tilt: The system will auto pan between the left and right azimuth and elevation
limits. This option should be selected if the user desires changes in elevation between the
two Auto Pan limits.

Home Speed
The Home Speed sub menu allows the user to define the speed at which the imager moves to its’
home position because in some situations, 100% speed may not be desired.

Zoom Proportional Speed

The Zoom Proportional Speed sub menu allows the user to enable or disable the interlocking of
zoom levels to system pan/tilt speed. If enabled, as the user zooms the image in, the maximum
top speed of the pan and tilt unit will be reduced. This allows for greater control as the HFOV is
reduced.

Stabilization
Selections in this menu allow the user to enable or disable video stabilization or to select the gyro
stabilization mode and calibrate or adjust the gyro.

Mode Selection
 Gyro Stabilization: Turn ON or OFF the Gyro Stabilization.
 Tilt Gyro Stabilization: Turn ON or OFF Tilt Gyro stabilization only.
 Dual Axis Gyro Stabilization: Turn ON or OFF Dual Axis Gyro stabilization (Pan and
Tilt).

Calibration
 Start Calibration: Allows the user to calibrate the gyro stabilization.

Gain Adjustment
 Enable: Enables gain adjustment. By using the Gain and Level Switches on the Serial
Hand Controller it allows the user to adjust the gain.
Gain (or how strong the reaction of the positioner gyro) The range is 1-255, with a
default of 10.
Level (or the rate gain of the positioner gyro) determines how fast the positioner will
react to disturbances. A high rate gain will cause the positioner to try to correct faster to
disturbances. The default setting is 45.
Changes made to Gain and level will persist while the system is powered, however, if the
system power is cycled, the gain and level will return to their default values respectively.
Gain Adjustment can also be Enabled/Disabled through the Serial Hand Controller
switches by rotating the Mode Dial switch to Stab Mode, rotating Feature Dial switch to
Home, then press and hold SET button.
 Disable: Disables gain adjustment.

Drift
 Pan Adjustment: This feature allows the user to adjust for drift in the gyro stabilization of
the positioner in the pan direction.
