Short description of the project:

A sigmoid Timoshenko beam resting on variable elastic foundation is investigated for

its dynamic behavior. A functionally graded sigmoid beam with Steel and Aluminium as its constituent
phases is considered for analysis . Material properties of the beam are assumed to vary continuously
in the thickness Direction. The material properties are assumed to follow sigmoid distribution of
power law. Finite element method is used for simply supported end condition of the beam. By the
finite element method beam can be analyzed very thoroughly. So that strength of beam can be
manipulated and applied at the proper place. A finite length functionally graded beam having
rectangular section which lies on a Pasternak elastic foundation is considered for analysis. Pasternak
is the most natural extension of the Winkler model for homogeneous foundations. While the
Interaction between springs has not been considered in the Winkler foundation model, the Pasternak
foundation model has taken into account the interaction between springs for homogeneous elastic
foundations. Pasternak foundation is also called as two parameter foundation. The first parameter of
Pasternak foundation model represents the normal pressure while the second parameter accounts
for the transverse shear stress due to interaction of shear deformation of the surrounding elastic
medium. Timoshenko beam theory which takes into account the effects of shear deformation and
rotary inertia has been applied in the analysis. It is observed that the beam having properties in core
according to exponential law is the most stable beam while the beam having properties in core as per
power law with index 2.5 is the least stable beam. For an FGSW beam it is found that the increase in
the thickness of FGM core makes the beam less stable when the properties in FGM vary as per power
law whereas the stability of beam enhances with the increase of thickness of FGM core when the
properties vary according to exponential law .Shape functions are assumed to convert the partial
differential equation into a series of ordinary differential equations. The shape functions are
dependent on length, material and cross-sectional properties ensuring better accuracy of the
solution.
Aim/Objective of the project:

In this project the buckling behavior of a SFGM(sigmoid functionally graded material)

Timoshenko beam on Pasternak elastic foundation is studied by using finite element method &
MATLAB software . This work shows very important relationship between the compressive force(load
applied along the axis of the beam) with buckling strength of the beam & the role play by foundation
parameters .By using boundary condition, results for Timoshenko beam in different cases varies in
stiffness matrix, mass matrix and graphs . The boundary conditions are satisfied by adding auxiliary
functions to the displacement functions .According to old theory many assumptions has been taken
place which is different from the practical situation and new theory tells the practical one. By the
finite element method beam can be analyzed very thoroughly. So that strength of beam can be
manipulated and applied at the proper place .Vertical load(compressive) ‘P’ along the axis of the
simply supported FGM beam having rectangular cross-section is applied & elastic restraints for
rotation and translation are assumed at the beam ends to investigate the effect of support weakening
on the beam behavior.

Importance of the project in engineering aspect:

The static and dynamic analysis of Timoshenko beams with different configurations are
of great importance for the design of many engineering applications. The usefulness of this element is
in the analysis of reinforced concrete or steel structures. Buckling problems of beams on elastic
foundations occupy an important place in many fields of structural and foundation engineering.
Innovativeness if any (why the project is different from others):
