The Denco Flexible Office System

The Company
For over 40 years, Denco has been the market leader in design, manufacture and installation of air conditioning
equipment. Denco Limited is a Lloyds Register Quality Assured Firm in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001.

Why Use the Denco Flexible Office System?

The inflexibility of ceiling mounted air conditioning and lighting, together with wall mounted telephone, power and
data sockets severely increase the cost and disruption when reconfiguring the traditional office space.

The Denco Flexible Office System can cost effectively alleviate these problems and, furthermore, when applied
to new builds can offer major reductions in both construction times and building costs.

The Denco Flexible Office Concept

In its ultimate form, quick and easy relocation of all electrical items is achieved with the use of a dedicated
system of power and data tracks run in a raised modular floor void. Combining the use of uplighters with the
Denco Flexible Office Air Conditioning System obviates the need for a suspended ceiling. All services are now
conveniently accessible in the floor void allowing easy reconfiguration and maintenance.

The Denco Flexible Office Air Conditioning System

The Denco Flexible Office Air Conditioning System is available in three basic configurations (shown over page),
but each utilises the raised modular floor to distribute conditioned and filtered air throughout the space. A series
of intelligent fan tiles, replacing 600mm x 600mm floor panels, and requiring only 240 Volt supply to operate,
provide truly personal environmental control for the occupants. Fan tiles can be simply unplugged and relocated
as required.

In addition to the raised modular floor, the Denco Flexible Office Air Conditioning System is comprised of two
main components:

Zone Unit
The Zone Unit provides conditioned air to the floor void. It can cool, heat, humidify, dehumidify and filter the
return air according to its’ inbuilt fully programmable controller.

The state of the art “electrically commutated” fans (40% more efficient than a conventional direct driven fan)
enables the Zone Unit to vary the amount of air discharged to the floor void to exactly match the room
requirements.

The Zone Units are available in three sizes: 1, 2 and 3 fan modules and with the option of chilled water and split
heat pump form, Denco Zone Units can be adapted for most situations.

Local Environmental Control Unit (LECU)

The Denco LECU gives the Flexible Office Air Conditioning System an exceptional ability to cope with the
changing office layout requirements. The LECU is an intelligent fan tile, easily positioned anywhere in the floor of
a “flexible office” and capable of operating at noise levels as low as NR17. The Denco LECU maintains the local
desired set temperature by re-circulating a varying mixture of air from the room and conditioned underfloor air. An
optional electric reheater will warm the air if the local area is too cool.

ZONE UNIT
The Zone Unit automatically varies the air volume to provide sufficient
cooled or heated air to the floor void.
The Zone Unit can be positioned inside or outside the space to be
conditioned, and requires only front access for maintenance.

UNDERFLOOR BARRIER
A flexible silicone impregnated material air barrier laid
beneath the raised floor creates a return air path to the
Zone Unit.
This system provides excellent control over complex
office layouts.
The barrier is easily and quickly relocated to suit any
modifications to the office area.

LECU Description

General
The LECU is a stand alone intelligent fan tile capable of monitoring local room temperatures and adjusting
automatically the amount of re-circulated and conditioned air discharged to the space to maintain the required
conditions.

It has been designed to be laid into a stringered raised modular floor and to become a part of the walking surface
in the room.

The LECU is made up of five fundamental sections:

! Casing
! Control Damper
! Fan Section
! Electrical Control and Connections
! Electrical Heater (Optional)

Cabinet
The LECU consists of a self-supporting steel structure in galvanised steel sheet.

It features two separate aluminium grilles, both with straight bars, one grille for the air supply and the other for the
extracting of the air above the floor when the unit is operating in partial or full re-circulating phases. The grilles
are designed to withstand the load of people walking over them.

The overall dimensions of the LECU are 600mm x 800mm x 219mm and it occupies the space of one 600mm x
600mm raised modular floor tile.

The face area of the two grilles is 150mm x 600mm each. The height can be 30mm or 40mm to level the top
surface of the surrounding floor.

The inlet for the conditioned underfloor air is positioned on one of the sides of the terminal. This position allows
the LECU to be used with a raised floor of reduced height (240mm approx., depending on the slab roughness
and tolerance).

Control Damper
The damper has an electrical actuator, which controls its opening to draw underfloor air or closing to allow re-
circulation of the room air.

The modulating damper is constructed to close against an underfloor air pressure of up to 100Pa.

The damper includes an adjustable by-pass that permits the LECU to draw a continuous amount of underfloor
supply air even when it is working in the re-circulating phase for fresh air purposes.

Fan Section
The fan section comprises forward curved centrifugal type and includes a closed type central electric motor, IP
44, which drives two centrifugal fans on a common shaft.

The electric motor is equipped with built-in thermal protection with automatic reset after tripping.

Control
The control is of the microprocessor controlled electronic type.

TCP-IP protocol is used in the control card in the LECU.

Page 13 Version: 09/02

Denco Limited Denco Flexible Office
Engineering Data

It is fitted with two air temperature sensors: the first sensor is for sensing the ambient temperature, the second
the underfloor temperature. By comparing these two readings with the chosen setpoint the LECU controls the
opening or closing of the damper and the eventual intervention of the electrical heating (if fitted), in such a way as
to maintain the requested ambient conditions.

Electrical connections
LECU is fitted with a four (4) metre supply cable and plug for the connection to the 240V 50Hz or 60Hz electrical
supply.

Electric Heater (optional)

LECU can be fitted with an optional electrical heater. The unit is equipped with either a 250W or 500W electrical
heaters, others up to 1 kW are available on request.

The heater is equipped with a manually re-settable safety thermostat for the automatic cut-out in case of high
temperatures.

LECU Operation

General
All the functions of the LECU are performed by the electronic control system fitted in the LECU.

Temperature control
Two sensors placed within the terminal read the room temperature and underfloor temperature and automatically
adjust the position of the motorised damper to suit the required conditions.

Cooling and Heating Modes

The room temperature value is compared with the selected setpoint. If the controller senses that cooling is
required and that the underfloor temperature is sufficiently low, it opens the control damper towards the floor void
allowing air from the floor void to be bled into the return air. When the room sensor senses that the temperature
is lower than set point, it closes the damper. When the damper is closed and the temperature is still below set
point, the controller activates the electrical heater.

If the controller senses that the room temperature is below setpoint and the underfloor temperature is higher than
the room temperature, the controller opens the damper to draw air from the floor void.

On / Off
Automatic start and stop, by timeswitch, of all the LECU's serving an entire zone can be provided.

Regulation of Setpoint
The temperature setpoint is set in each of the LECU units. The setpoint is set by a rheostat tuned for +22oC with
± 2oC possibility to change set point

Optional: Other setpoints can be agreed on a project by project basis.

Variation of the Fan Speed

The fan speed can be set in five different speeds by switching windings. Factory standard settings are speeds 1
and 2 with selector switch.
Fan On / Off
The Fan On / Off is controlled with a switch on the LECU and is situated underneath the grille. Please note that
the fan must be on to enable the unit to function correctly. The speed selector is incorporated in the same switch.

Page 14 Version: 09/02

Denco Limited Denco Flexible Office
Engineering Data

Technical Data
The LECU draws air from either the underfloor plenum or the room, depending on the thermal load to he
dissipated. It consists of the following main items:

! Casing
! Damper
! Fan section
! Control
! Electrical Wiring
! Optional: Electrical Heater

Casing
The casing consists of a self-supporting steel sheet framework to he laid onto raised floor stringers, in place of
one 600mm x 600mm room floor tile. Two walkable aluminium grilles with straight fins shall be laid on top of the
LECU. A 200mm x 600mm floor tile, not supplied with the LECU shall he placed between the two grilles when
installed.

and maximum value. Access to the damper electric motor will be from the bottom of the unit.

Fan Section
The fan section consists of two impellers and scrolls moved by a central IP 44 electric motor with automatic
internal thermal protection. Five speeds are available.

Control
Each LECU will he fitted with an electronic processor and will have the ability to control without reference to other
units. The first stage of control regulates the airflow from the floor by opening or closing a motorised damper,
stage two regulates the electric heater (if fitted).

The control will perform the functions of temperature control and automatic and independent cooling / heating
changeover. Selection of heating and cooling cycles is automatic.

COOLING: The motorised damper will open if subject to a cooling requirement when the underfloor temperature
is cooler than return air.
HEATING: The motorised damper will open if subject to a heating requirement when the underfloor temperature
is higher than return air.

The room sensor will be located on the front panel of the unit. The floor sensor will be located inside the LECU in
the intake from the floor void.

Electrical Section
The LECU will operate at 240V, 1Ph, 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The LECU will be supplied complete with four (4) meters of
power supply cable, entering from the bottom of the LECU.

L.E.C.U. Control

Integrated Controller
The temperature controller is designed for control in one or two stages. The first stage is either a cooling or
heating stage; the second is always a heating stage. The first stage (cooling) output is either of
increase/decrease signal for damper. The control of this output may be inverted to heating by using a supply air
temperature sensor. The second stage (heating) output is on/off type for use with electrical heaters.

General
! Room or floor unit with temperature sensor.
! Control accuracy by means of PI control.
! The room and supply air temperatures are monitored constantly.

General
Ambient Temperature: Operating 0°C to 50°C
Storage -40°C to +85°C
Ambient Humidity Maximum 90% RH
Controller
Power Supply 24 VAC ± 10%, 47 - 63 Hz
