Art may be defined as a human pursuit to imitate life and the world into something pleasing
or beautiful.
Contemporary Art
It is the art of today, produced by artists who are living in the twenty-first century. It provides
an opportunity to reflect on CONTEMPORARY society and the issues relevant to ourselves, and
the world around us.
Aristotle – claimed that humans have instincts for imitation and harmony. “lying deep in our
nature.” He argued that human beings are the “most imitative of living creatures.”
J. Paul Getty – “Art made produced by artists living today. Today’s artists work in and respond
to a global environment that is culturally diverse, technologically advancing, and multifaceted.”
FORMS OF ART
1. PICTURE (drawing, painting, printmaking and photography)
This is a two-dimensional image of various subjects ranging from real-life images to the
visually abstract.
2. SCULPTURE
This is a three- dimensional artwork that may be created using stone, marble, wood and
concrete.
3. ARCHITECTURE
These are structures that meant to be used as shelter. The art of architecture relies on
the design and purpose of the structure.
4. MUSIC
This is the art form that appeals on the sense of hearing. Music is composed by
combining notes into harmony
5. LITERATURE
This is the art form of language through the combined used of words, creating meaning
and experience.
6. THEATRE
This is the art form of performance. Dramatic texts are portrayed on the stage by actors
and actresses and enhanced by props, lights and sounds.
7. CINEMA
This art form is a technological translation of theatre. In films, special effects are utilized
to enhance the story telling.
8. DANCE
This is the art of human form. The body is used, mobilized and choreographed in a
specific time, form and space.
It is the state agency responsible for the promotion of arts and culture from various
regions.
Responsible for bringing together the different arts from the various regions to the
entire country and the whole world.

of the current conditions of the society.”
1. APPROPRIATION
Existing artworks are appropriated to produce another artwork. This element uses prints,
images, and icons to produce another art form. It combines past from the present and revives
interests to existing forms of art.

3. SPACE
It is an Art that is transforming space. For example, flash mobs, art installations
in malls and parks. This element of Art is performed and positioned in a specific
space such as public places.
4. HYBRIDITY
This element uses unconventional materials and mixing of unlikely materials to produce an
artwork.
5. TECHNOLOGY
This element uses technology in the creation and dissemination of art works.
The subject and medium are two basic elements of art that help in experiencing life, world
and its beauty.
The real life objects we are trying to imitate is called Subject. The way the colors are chosen
and blended is called Medium.
