Feasibility Study

I. DISCRIPTION OF PRODUCT OF SERVICES

The Adalla Schools Foundation (Non-Government Organization) is

considering on establishing an FM broadcast station near the vicinity of Mindanao
State University Iligan Institute of Technology that could operate at an assigned
carrier frequency of 105 MHz. With 225V of carrier voltage and load resistance
of 100 Ohms, the pilot output power of the FM station would be 250 W, and this
will hopefully be improved since the station is funded independently on its early
operating years. It is a wideband FM which transmits with up to 75 kHz deviation
from the center frequency. This frequency deviation could transmit music, speech
and information signal frequency with up to 15 kHz bandwidth (modulation index
of 5). Because of its wideband specification, signal-to-noise ratio is improved.
Lesser amplitude in demodulated signals means lesser total noise figure that
indicates to have better signal.

II. TECHNOLOGY CONSIDERATIONS.

The City of Iligan, is an industrialized city having three private commercial
FM broadcasting stations: Real Radio Iligan that operates at 92.7MHz, iFM Iligan
DXIX which operates at 102.3MHz, and Wild FM Iligan DXIL at 103.1 MHz.
The Philippine broadcast band uses the standard VHF broadcast band which
expands 87.5MHz to 108MHz. Having a small output power is a disadvantage for
the latter because its competitors use FM technologies with high output power.
Wild FM Iligan which is close on the assigned frequency could be a great threat
for the station because its significant frequencies might have power high enough
to interfere the main modulated signal which will be transmitted to radios of the
listeners. This would not ruin the whole system but the listeners might hear some
interference.

Radio communication systems of institute security might also affect the

signal. This communication systems is a narrowband FM, this could be a minor
threat for the signal to be interfered.
III. PRODUCT/SERVICE MARKETPLACE
Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology is a vastly
populated institution with about 1011 employees which includes 490 faculty
members, 105 lecturers and 416 staff and with almost 10,000 students. Majority of
these numbers lives near the vicinity.

Internet is widely used medium for spreading information, but not all
students, faculty or people in the community are accessible with this technology
since not everybody has its own smart devices to access the internet. For this
matter this idea came out.

The primary aim of this FM station is to cater announcements that came

from the university. This might also be a medium for the people to access some
news inside the institution. For this reason, the people will have the transparency
and knowledge on what is going on inside the university. Since our university
doesn’t only hold school related activities but also caters public-based activities as
well. The station can also provide people entertainment with prepared programs
by the station.

IV. FINANCIAL PROJECTIONS

FM radio stations have a lot of things to consider especially on

maintaining expenses. The following are: DJ’s salary, operator, maintenance,
water and electricity bill. The station could not immediately get advertisers on its
young days of operation but might have better investors on the future especially
when the quality of the FM station is improved. The projected expenses are
specified on the tables.

V. FINDINGS & RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the presented information on this feasibility study, it is not
recommended for Adalla Schools Foundation to put a 250W output power FM
radio station near the vicinity of MSU-IIT.

For the technology, the presented FM radio transmitter is may be too weak
to operate on the vicinity of MSU-IIT due to the following reasons:
1. The power of the FM station is too low to overcome the contender’s
radio stations with high powered FM transmitters.
2. There are a lot of factors that might affect the transmission of signals
and might be interfered when reach to the receiver, first is the
established commercial radio broadcast station and next is the
communication systems being used by the institute security (this might
have low output power yet the FM station to be established is low-
powered as well and might be affected minimally).
 For the continuity of the operation of station based on its financial
instability the following matters were cited:

1. It is difficult to maintain the station since advertisers may not be

persuaded on what technologies are being used.
2. The area of the advertised people might be too small for them to
gamble on huge projects.
3. The improvement of the project relies on the future investors since it is
firstly invested by a foundation. Means no stable income due to its
reliability to donations.

It is recommended that the station must have a reliable technology to

overcome the powerful radio stations along the city. The operation of the radio
station must also be widen for vast number of audiences so that investors and
advertisers will have better business using the radio station.
