Bell Ringer

1. What do you think of when you hear the word

force?
2. Can you think of any examples of a force? (I don’t
mean Star Wars)
Pretest
• Clear your desk except for a scratch sheet of paper and a pencil.
WHAT IS A “FORCE”?
A force is…

a push or pull!
Measured in “Newtons” (N)
Types of Forces
• Gravity/Weight
• Normal- force perpendicular to the surface of contact
• Tension
• Friction
• Drag/air resistance
• Applied
Name the forces present
1. Pushing on the table
2. Pulling a string
3. Rubbing hands together
4. Jumping off a cliff
5. Dropping a coffee filter
On Earth, gravity pulls us down…
Acceleration caused by gravity is always:

9.8 m/s/s
Remember this number.
Mass and Weight

Mass always stays the same on other planets!

It’s “how much stuff” an object has.

Weight is a force caused by gravity.

Newton’s Laws of Motion
Inertia (Newton’s 1st Law)
…why we have airbags!
Inertia is…
the resistance that any object has to changing its motion.

As mass , then inertia

Newton’s 2 nd and 3rd Laws
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
• 2nd- If you have a net force then you will have
acceleration.
• Net force: the sum of all the forces acting on an
object.

Fnet = ma
Free-body diagrams represent forces on
objects…
This represents Jorge who is being pulled by
Randy and pulled down by gravity.
If all forces are equal and opposite…
They are “balanced”. The object does not move.
Combining Forces
The two groups pull with equal forces in opposite
directions. The forces combine to make a net force of
zero.
If forces are unbalanced…
Acceleration happens!
Newton’s 3 rd Law of Motion
• 3rd- For every force there is an equal and
opposite force.
Assessment Questions

1. If an object is at rest, which of the following

statements must be true?
a. There are no forces acting on the object.
b. There is no friction acting on the object.
c. The forces acting on the object are unbalanced.
d. The net force acting on the object is zero.

ANS: D
Assessment Questions

3. In which direction does Earth’s gravitational force

act?
a. opposite the direction of motion
b. downward toward the center of Earth
c. upward away from the center of Earth
d. in the direction of motion

ANS: B
Newton’s Laws of Motion Song

• The first law is the Law of Inertia, which is

resisting in change of motion.
• The second law states that if you apply a net
force you will get acceleration.
• The third law states for every force there is an
equal and opposite force.
