Figurative Language Lesson Plan

1. Unit title/intended grade level: Figurative Language: 3 Examples of Figurative

Language to Incorporate in Your Writing (intended for ninth grade).

2. Performance Objective: The presentation portion of this lesson is aimed at the class as a

whole in order for students to review and/or learn three new types of figurative language

that can be incorporated into their writing. At the end of the presentation there will be an

interactive activity that will allow students to interact with the Smartboard to demonstrate

their understanding of the three types of figurative language by marking an X in the

appropriate category. The lesson will then conclude with an assessment using Kahoot to

quiz the students’ understanding of the three new forms of figurative language.

3. Rationale: The goal of this lesson is for students to understand three new forms of

figurative language that can be incorporated into their future writing. By providing a

definition, examples, and practice for these types of figurative language, students will

have a greater understanding of each type. This lesson is aligned with ELA CC Standard

9-10.4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and

style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

4. Assessment strategy: There are two forms of assessment in this lesson. During the

lesson, student volunteers will come up to the Smartboard to specify which category of

figurative language the example fits into. Each student with then individually participate
in a Kahoot quiz on their personal devices to measure their understanding of the three

new forms of figurative language.

5. Accommodations of Exceptional Learners: This lesson can be modified in a number of

ways to accommodate the needs of various students. The examples read aloud verbally

can be printed out for students who are auditorily impaired. Students can also share

mobile devices with a partner or group member if they do not have access to their own

device.

6. Academic language: figurative language, personification, metaphor, hyperbole

7. Grouping strategy: Students will work as a class during the interactive whiteboard

activity, but will complete the assessment individually.

8. Materials:

○ Smartboard and Google Slides presentation

○ Access to Kahoot and Kahoot quiz

○ Mobile devices for each student

9. Enactment:

○ Hook and student aim: 2 min.

- Introduce the lesson: In today’s lesson, we’re going to learn about ways to

improve our writing. When we write sentences, we usually write them to mean

literally what we want to say. However, skilled writers often use figurative

language to give them an emotional and visualizing effect on the readers. Today

we are learning about 3 ways to use figurative language.

- Student aim: After the lesson, you will be able to identify three different types of

figurative language: personification, metaphor and hyperbole. You will be able to

use them in sentences, understand their definitions, and apply them in

assessments.

○ Development: 15 min.

- Term definition: Each person is going to define one term in the three types of

figurative language learned in the lesson in order: Personification, Metaphor and

Hyperbole. Then they follow with the examples and how the examples fit in each

concept. For example: in explaining the sentence “The trees danced in the wind”,

teachers point out the word “danced” as an action associated with human beings,

therefore the trees are seen to exhibit human behavior to increase the sentence’s

effect on the listeners.

- Practice round: The teachers are going to show examples on a document, and ask

students to identify what kind of figurative language is used in the sentence. Then

they will ask one student to volunteer approach the board and mark on whichever

option they think is correct. There will be 9 sentences to practice.

- Assessment: Using Kahoot!, the teachers will organize an interactive quiz with

students using laptop or cell phones. The questions are based on the definition of

the terms learned in class and identifying figurative language in sentences.

Students are scored and ranked on their performance.

○ Culmination: 2 min.

- Reiterating the main points: Today, we have learned about 3 types of figurative

language used in writing. I hope you understand these concepts and are able to

identify these types of figurative language when they are used in a text. Based on
your performance on the assessment, I think you have done a great job in

demonstrating your understanding and reaching the goals of this lesson.

○ Leap/looking ahead: 1 min.

- There are more types of figurative speech to be learned. Next lesson, we are going

to explore the rest of figurative speech and make an effort to come up with our

own sentences using figurative speech.
