CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM: RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND

Introduction

In the developed as well as developing part of the world, construction, wielding

and production industry is considered to be one of the most significant industries.

However, at the same time is also recognized to be the most hazardous. Having lack of

materials, safety gears and equipment is one of the major cases for the workers, not

knowing and understanding what would be the effects of it in their health, in the

workplace and in the product. Many studies demonstrate that the majority of accidents

and resulting injuries in the construction and production industry are attributed to

unsafe work practices of the construction and production workers rather than unsafe

working conditions. According to a study done in Nigeria, The Effect of Lack of

Adequate Attention to Safety Measures on Construction Sites in Akwa Ibom, the

purpose of health and safety measures in the construction and production industry is to

ensure health, safety and well-being of workers (Meekel and Hyrmak, 2012).

The researchers decided to conduct this study to determine the effects of having

lack of materials, safety gears and equipment to the environment and the workers.

Objectives

Knowing the effects of lack of materials, safety gears and equipment is the aim of

this study. To find out if the workers are conforming to the rules in order to keep the

workplace safe and secure.

1. Identify the effects of lack of materials, safety gears and equipments

2. Find out if the workers notice the results of having lack of materials, safety

gears and equipment

3. Gather opinions from the workers about the materials, safety gears and

equipment

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to know the effects of having lack of materials, safety

gears and equipment at Stoneworks Specialist. As a student, the researchers have

recognized some problem of having lack of materials, safety gears and equipment to

the workers.

Specifically, it seeks answers to the following questions;

1. What are the effects of lack of materials, safety gears and equipment?

3. What are the opinions of the workers/ employees?

Scope and Limitation

This research will be focusing on the effects of having lack of materials, safety gears

and equipment to the workers at the Stoneworks Specialist. The researcher’s aim is to

know if the workers are aware about the safety management and if the company are

implementing all the safety materials that is needed by the workers, to find out if the

workers notice the result of having lack of materials for their safety and to gather some

opinion from the workers that could possible help them to implement and improve the

materials to the safety management. The gathering of data will be conducted at

Stoneworks Specialist Company. The researchers will randomly pick (DI PA PO

NAMIN ALAM, KASI PO NATIGIL ANG OJT NAMIN PANSAMANTALA) workers of

Stoneworks Specialist to answer the survey questionnaire in order to gather data. The

research subject orientation started last November (KELAN PO?), 2017 and it is

expected to be presented on January (KELAN PO?) 2017.

Hypothesis

In this study, the researchers are expected to find out the effects of having a lack of

materials, safety gears and equipment. Some of the workers can’t use the safety

equipment during their work hour.

 If the workers are aware about the lack of materials and safety gears and

equipment.

 If the workers notice the negative results of having a lack of materials and safety

equipment.

 If the researchers already gathered some opinions from the workers, the

company management can do some improvement for implementing the safety

management for the workers.

Significance of the Study

This study could help maintain the safety and security in the workplace. It can help

provide knowledge about the effects of having lack of materials, safety gears and

equipment. This study can help provide awareness for the workers at the workplace.

They will be alert from any hazards and risks that could affect not only the workers

working in it, but also the workplace and the product.

The workers will know how to properly act and conform in the effects of having lack

of materials, safety gears and equipment. They will be aware and alert from the

hazards and risks they will encounter in the future.

The company will benefit to the result of this study. This research will help provide

ways to resolve the problem in the present time. They could have an idea on how to

provide and keep the materials, safety gears and equipment on hand and they could

keep the workplace safe.

The future researchers will benefit to this study. They could use this study to know

if the workers are fully aware about having lack of materials, safety gears and

equipment. It will also serve as a source of information.
