SEC: B FYP PROPOSAL 26/09/2017

1. Introduction:
1.1 Overview:
In this machine we will perform different four operation cutting, shaping, drilling & punching
through a single source at a time and separately. We want to fulfill the market need to produce
a low cost, low man effort and low power consumption. The input motor rotate the main shaft
through pulley which rotate the different machine tool according to our need simultaneously
and separately. The punching process will be done using Geneva mechanism or cylinder crank
mechanism.

Industries are basically meant for production of useful goods and services at low production
cost, machinery cost and low inventory cost. Nowadays, every task has been made quicker and
fast due to technology advancement but this advancement also demands huge investments and
expenditure. Every industry desires to increase the productivity rate maintaining the quality of
the product at comparatively low cost. In any industry considerable portion of investment is
being made for machinery installation.

2. Components required:
i) Grinding disk
ii) Cutter disk
iii) Geneva wheel
iv) Drilling tool
v) Motor

3. Aim & Objectives:

We want to make our project to overcome the market need using this multifunction operating
machine. We made our project at the middle scale and use the legal means. Our project mainly
focus on the following objectives;

i) Design & fabrication of multifunction operating machine

ii) Low manufacturing and maintenance cost
iii) Time saving, less man effort, compact size

4. Historical background:
Dr.ToshimichiMoriwaki focused on recent trends in the machine tool technologies. He
conducted a survey from the viewpoints of high speed and high performance machine tools,
combined multifunctional machine tools, ultra precision machine tools and advanced and
intelligent control technologies.
Frankfurt-am Main states that selling machinery remains a tough business. Machine tools
nowadays have to be veritable “jack of all trades”, able to handle all kinds of materials, to
manage without any process materials as far as possible, and be capable of adapting to new job
profiles with maximized flexibility.
Two highly respected experts on machining and forming from Dortmund and Chemnitz
report on what’s in store for machine tool manufacturers and users. Multi-purpose machines
are the declarations of independence. The trend towards the kind of multi- purpose machining
centers that are able to cost efficiently handle a broad portfolio of products with small batch
sizes accelerated significantly during the crisis. “With a multi-purpose machine, you’re less
dependent on particular products and sectors”, explains Biermann [1].
D.V.Sabarinanda, Siddhartha, T.Mohanraj in their paper “Design and Fabrication of
Automated Hacksaw Machine” (April 2014) gives an idea about the various components
required for fabrication of the proposed model. These components will help to get smooth
working condition and future automation of different mechanical actions as well as linkages.

5. Operations to be performed:
5.1 Cutting:
Cutting is a process of separating the component / material from the given stock by (to and fro)
motion of crank mechanism.

Two revolution of main shaft = one stroke of hacksaw

Thickness of metal rod = (6-8) mm

5.2 Drilling:
Drilling is the operation of producing circular hole in the work-piece by using a rotating
cutter called drill. The machine used for drilling is called drilling machine.

The diameter of tool = (10-12) mm

Revolution for drilling tool of aluminum= 1000 rpm

Revolution for drilling tool of steel = 350 rpm

Sheet penetration = (1-2) mm

5.3 Grinding:
Grinding is a semi finishing process which is primarily meant for bringing the component for
desired shape and size.

3
SEC: B FYP PROPOSAL 26/09/2017

The diameter for grinding wheel = 150 mm

The revolution for the Zirconium oxide grinding wheel = 1000rpm

The revolution for the titanium carbide grinding wheel = 800-1100 rpm

5.4 Punching:
Punching is a metal forming process that uses a punch press to force a tool, called a punch,
through the work piece to create a hole via shearing. The punching is done through Geneva m
or cylinder crank mechanism. The Geneva mechanism connected to the main shaft and
rotating disk keep the sheet metal under punching through up and down movement of punching
tool.

In one revolution of main shaft the Geneva disk rotate

= one step

Metal sheet thickness = 2-3 mm

6. Methodology:

6.1 Experimental setup:

In experimental setup we build up our model in the required arrangement and analysis the
different parts of the system. The schematic diagram is shown below as;

6.2 Expected results:

i) Less man effort
ii) Less cost and maintenance
iii) Less power consumption
iv) Worker movement minimize
v) Floor area required reduce

6.3 Utilization of results:

i) Used for industrial and automated workshops
