2/12/17 Workshop

1:00-1:14 Ice breaker/ what you wish to get out of these workshops

1:15- 1:25 Go over the prompt and unpack what the thesis should be

The prompt is asking you to argue the meaning of the mural through using visual
rhetoric

Subject: Meaning of the mural Tool: Visual Rhetoric

Thesis should look something along the lines of this:

The mural “x” argues/depicts/connotes ______What the mural is about _______

through the Artist's use of __color____, ___shape____, ____symbolism____.

If this is your thesis then your body should then look along the lines of this:

Body 1: Artists use of color supports the overall message that ___What the thesis
statement is arguing_____ because of ___________.

You should explain the significance of your research and give some background on how
it ties into the images you are analyzing and then spend the majority of the body
explaining

And so on for body 2 & 3.

Ex: Thesis: The “Pacoima Art Revolution's” main message celebrates the female
revolutionary figure that has fought throughout history, as shown through the symbolism
of the Mona Lisa and her military attire, and the contrast in cultures presented in the
image.

● For the intro you should give and overview of how the overall painting should
look but don’t go in full detail. You should save the analyzing for your body
paragraphs. You should also give a brief description of the history and/or social
argument you will be discussing.

Ex. Intro:
“Piety, Purity, Domesticity, and Submissiveness” are what makes a female a
“true women” according to the Cult of Domesticity. A set of values that were set upon
women in the 19th century. This construct of the ideal women specifically refers to the
United States and Great Britain, however; gender equality is faced on a global scale.
Chicano muralist Levi Ponce encompasses this global struggle in his mural “The
Pacoimas Art Revoultion”. The mural portrays Mona Lisa wearing a giant sombrero,
carrying a rifle on her back, and the Mexican flag draped across her shoulders and a
sword in her hand as she valiantly carries a sword in one of her hands. This powerful
image is adorned with symbols of the Mexican Revolution, as well as featuring the
revolutionary painting itself; the Mona Lisa. Most would argue that the historical imagery
of this painting’s main focus is about culture. With further examination the culture
clashes expressed in this painting by combining an iconic Mona Lisa painting by
Leonardo Da Vinci, and Mexican attire carries a greater message of the inequality that
both European and Mexican women face.
