Lab 7-C Using Experimental Data to Determine an Equilibrium Constant

BACKGROUND
The equilibrium constant, Keq, can be calculated using equilibrium concentrations. We will find the
equilibrium constant for this reaction:

Fe3+(aq) + SCN-(aq) ⇌ Fe(SCN) 2+(aq)

The background in your textbook (p.476) explains clearly how we will determine the equilibrium constant
using four different equilibrium mixtures.

PRELAB

Become familiar with the materials at your lab station. Read over the method with your group, along with the
following modifications. The step numbers below correspond with the textbook steps.

Step 1: Data tables have been provided on the Lab Sheet. Each member must complete the concentration
calculations (prelab) before starting.
Step 2: Test tubes, beakers and vials have been labeled. You don’t need a beaker for 0.2M Fe(NO3)3, since
the standard solution for vial #1 was already prepared.

Note: Labelled plastic beakers contain a 50 mL glass beaker, a graduated cylinder (if needed), and a pipette.
The outside beaker is to keep these materials together so that there is no cross-contamination. Behaviour
resulting in contamination, or using the plastic beakers for the solutions, will result in lost Observation
marks. For chemicals with low volumes, a graduated pipette has been provided. The mark just below the
bulb is 1.0 mL.

Step 3: Skip this. Vial #1 contains this standard solution. No changes should be made to this vial.

Steps 4 – 6: You may do this in the four labeled test tubes, or one at a time in the syringe.
Calculations: Follow the steps from p.478, and complete the table as you go.
Clean-up: You must clean up properly. Observation marks will be lost if all members do not stay until the
lab station is tidied.
 WASTE goes into the beaker labeled “waste” at your station.
 All beakers and the stir road are rinsed
 vials, syringe, and test tubes are rinsed and placed upside down in a beaker with paper towel to
drain for the next group.
 Vial #1 must be left with the standard solution in it, and the cap on. It should not have been
tampered with during the lab.

TESTABLE QUESTION

HYPOTHESIS

PRELAB QUESTIONS

1. The standard solution in Vial #1 was prepared by combining 180 mL of 0.200 M Fe(NO3)3 and 20 mL
of 0.0020 M KSCN. A small portion of this has been placed in Vial #1.

a. Write the net ionic equation for the reaction. Determine the limiting reactant. Why is it
appropriate to assume that the reaction has gone to completion in the forward direction?

b. Calculate the concentration of iron (II) thiocyanate ions in the solution.

c. How are K+ and NO3- significant to the reaction?

2. Find the initial molar concentration of iron (II) nitrate in each reaction. Show a sample calculation
here, and enter the concentrations into the data table.

3. Find the initial molar concentration of potassium thiocyanate in each reaction. Show a sample
calculation here, and enter the concentrations in the data table.

4. You will use a depth ratio to find the concentration of the iron (II) thiocyanate in the equilibrium
mixture. This is explained on p.478. Using the depths shown in the chart below, show a sample
calculation for the equilibrium concentration of Fe(SCN)2+ and fill it in the table. Assume the
standard solution has the same concentration as your standard solution.

# depth of solution in vial depth of standard solution [Fe(SCN)2+]

ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION

These should be on a separate piece of paper. Your analysis should show all four ICE tables and calculations.
