What is a hydroponic system?

This is a structure such as a tray, A-frame or tower that holds an inert medium or
water and provides a place to grow plants.

There are different types of hydroponic systems which can meet individual needs of
plants. However, each system has to have three essential ingredients for plant
growth.

These are oxygen, water/moisture, and nutrients. Hydroponics systems can be

classified into the following two categories.

Solution culture: In this hydroponic system, a nutrient-filled solution is provided

for the plant roots to grow directly in. It is also known as liquid culture.

Aggregate culture: In this hydroponic system, a medium such as sand, small clay
pellets or gravel is provided for the roots to grow in.

This is a branch of hydroculture in which plants are grown in an aquatic based
environment or soilless medium.

The medium does not have to be water, it can be a solution filled with nutrients or
an inert growing medium such as sand or perlite.

This type of hydroculture allows plant roots to be in direct contact with a

nutrient solution and also have oxygen.
