The Committee
2018 Employee Performance Awards
Galveston College
4015 Avenue Q
Galveston, Texas 77550

To Whom It May Concern:

Thank you for the opportunity to provide additional information to my file regarding my nomination for
the 2018 Employee Performance Award. My understanding that the additional information should
demonstrate (1). How we help our students. (2). That we are knowledgeable in our field and (3). We
are available to our students.

1). How can we (I) help our students?

Substitute “faculty” for “employees” and “students” for “business”, and I think Sir Richard Branson,
Founder of The Virgin Group (airlines and records) says it best.

“Take care of your employees and they’ll take care of your business.”

I believe that I can best help our students to be the best that they can be by helping our faculty, our staff
and our administration academically, politically, and professionally. By my supporting as best and as
limitedly as I can, all the employees of the school, and when we all do the same for one another, all of our
students do better. As such, I am a member of, or have participated in the following activities in support
of the Galveston College Community.

Member and Chair of The President’s Salary Committee;

Member of Texas Community College Teacher’s Association and Committee for

Member Services;

Member and on the Board of The Texas Faculty Association;

Helped organize with Dr. Shelton and Ms. Karen Flowers, “A Regent and Employee
Happy Hour Get Together;”

Organized and Promoted a First Friday Luncheon for Representative Wayne Faircloth;

Helped organize a faculty and student driven State Representative’s Candidate Forum;

Faculty Senate President;

Member Galveston College Communication, Marketing & Advertising Committee;

With Dr. Matthews, helped revamp the College’s Faculty Evaluation Form;
With IT, helped revamp the Standardized Portion of the college syllabus;

Participated in the “Reading Deeper” student directed reading program for the College’s
Quality Enhancement Program;

Conducted on-campus voter registration drives;

Member Rotary Club of Galveston. Service Activities include The Club Chili Supper
and The Crawfish Boil;

2). Knowledgeable in one’s field.

1). Professional Development (Accounting). I take approximately 20 hours of

continuing education approved by the state of Texas Public Board of
Accountancy annually. Topics of study include recent Generally Accepted
Accounting Principles and Financial Accounting Standards Board updates.
2). Professional Development (Economics). Continue a “re-reading,” or a first time
read of the classical works in economics. The focus this year is on Karl Marx.
3). Weekly reading of periodicals including The Wall Street Journal, The Economist,
The Houston Chronicle, The New York Times and The New Yorker.
4). Continue learning how to better utilize MyEconlab, and MyAccountinglab.
5). Continue community service including The Galveston Rotary Club, City of
Galveston Pension Board (currently acting chair), Galveston Independent School
District Foundation (Treasurer), and First Presbyterian Church of Galveston. This
keeps me up-to-date with the changes in the profession of accounting and
economics in “The Real World.”

3). We are available for our students.

During the school year I taught over twelve sections of accounting and economics which
included lectures, office hours, writing reference letters, preparing exams, on-campus hours, help
sessions, faculty referrals, mid-term grades, developing a student business professions club, career
counseling, department coordinator, tutoring, class scheduling, catalogue review, meeting special
student’s needs, grading exams and supporting students by attending their collegiate extracurricular
activities including baseball and softball games, and the college plays.

No doubt about it, it has been a good year. Thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Don F. Davison, CPA
