Osmosis Egg Lab

By : Jade Stalik

If you put an egg in various substances with different

concentrations of water then osmosis will occur.

On Friday, the second of february my group and I took an Egg with a mass of 66.8g and put it
into 200 ml of vinegar in a beaker. When the egg was placed into the vinegar it sunk to the
bottom, and little bubbles formed around the shell of the egg shown below .

On the following monday (day four) when we observed our egg our eggs mass grew 1.5%
leaving its mass at 101g. The eggs volume emerged 11% leaving 175 ml in the beaker. There
was no shell remaining on the egg, osmosis caused the water in the vinegar to diffuse into the
egg (because the egg has lower water concentration), causing the egg to inflate and grow. Then
we took our now inflated egg and put it into karo syrup, and left it in the syrup over night.
On Tuesday (day five) osmosis caused the water to diffuse to the syrup leaving the eggs mass
without 1.7% of its previous mass, causing its new mass to be 57.8g. The volume went up 1.2%
leaving it at a solid 225 ml, and a very cloudy membrane. We replaced the syrup with distilled
water and when the egg was placed inside the beaker of distilled water the egg sunk.

Day six (Wednesday), the eggs mass increased 1.6% creating a mass of 97.4g. The volume
decreased by 1.5% creating a new volume of 150ml left in the beaker. The egg was a cloudy
white color, it moved around very easily, and a film covered the surface as shown below

Conclusion: My hypothesis was supported. When the egg was placed in vinegar osmosis took
place and the eggs semipermeable membrane let water diffuse into the egg because of its low
concentration. Next when the egg was placed into syrup the water once again diffused across
the semipermeable membrane of the egg into the low concentration area of the syrup, causing
the egg to deflate. Next when the egg was placed into distilled water, and some water moved
across the semipermeable membrane of the egg into the egg causing it to inflate once more.
