Civil 3D Lesson 20 – Civil/Survey Tool Pack

This chapter is being provided to introduce a set of productivity enhancing Civil/Survey

tools written to work with Civil 3D 2015. This lesson more specifically targets concepts
discussed in previous assignments while implementing several new productivity
enhancing tools described below. The tools have been classified for the purpose of this
lesson as falling under one of three categories.
1. Civil 3D Alias keys which are not available with the software and which
allow users to execute some of the more widely used routines from the
AutoCAD Command Line and Dynamic Input prompts.
2. A series of powerful utilities which may be run from a Custom Menu, the
Command Line or Dynamic Input prompts which allow users to carry out
everyday tasks performed by Civil Engineers and Land Surveyors.
3. Linetypes for some of the more commonly mapped features which are not
available in the software.

Although users are permitted to use these tools in the workplace, the tools
have not been tested in a production environment, and there is no guarantee
that all of the tools will work with every Civil 3D installation. Therefore,
these tools are to be used at your own risk.

All of the files must be loaded, or the Tool Pack will not function
appropriately. The tools will be ready to use the next time you open or create
a drawing in Civil 3D. The files can also be loaded in the active Civil 3D
session by browsing to them in the “Load/Unload Applications” dialogue box
and selecting the “Load” button.

[SKIP METHOD 2 BELOW AND USE METHOD 1 IF WORKING IN THE SRJC COMPUTER LAB]

Method 2

Copy the files shown below into the “Support” directory of the Civil 3D
Installation. The default Civil 3D support path is:

“C:\program files\autodesk\autocad civil 3d 2015\support”

If this path is not present on your workstation, then your network

administrator may have elected not to install the software with the default
settings. If this is the case, then consult with your network administrator
to determine the appropriate search path. This may be observed inside the
software by typing “Options” and selecting the “Files” tab.

Part 1C - Loading the Tools

A “CEST” (Civil Engineering and Surveying Technology) pull down menu has been
written for use with these utilities and may be loaded as follows:

Open the Autodesk Custom User Interface by typing “CUI” at the command line. While
on the “Transfer” tab, select the folder icon in the upper right corner of the right pane to
open the customization file “CEST.cuix” located with the other Assignment 20 Tool Pack
files. Expand the “Menus” group in the right hand pane to view the “CEST” menu.
Expand the “Menus” group in the left hand pane to view the “Main Customization File
(C3d.cuix)”. Drag the “CEST” menu from the right pane to the left pane so that it is
copied just below “Inquiry” as reflected in the graphic below.

Select the apply button below to load the menu and OK to exit. If the menu bar is not
present at the top of the screen then turn it on using the drop down arrow on the right side
of the quick access toolbar discussed in Lesson 1 (shown in the graphic below for
reference).

The menu is not required to run the Civil/Survey tool pack since all of the tool pack
commands were designed to be run from the command line or dynamic input prompts,
but it does provide a convenient summary of the available commands from the second
category of the Tool Pack.

Exercise Instructions Part 2 - Using the Tools

Begin a session of AutoCAD Civil 3D. If the application opens with a drawing session
titled “Drawing1” close this drawing.

Use the “Menu Browser” or “Menu Bar” to open the drawing file included with this
lesson titled “Lesson 20-Begin” and save the drawing as "Civil3D-20-##" (where the
“##” reflects the number which was assigned to you on the first day of class) to the folder
“F:\Civil 3D Projects”. This drawing contains Point information and Styles which we
will use with this lesson.

Type “EP” to open the edit points panorama, change the elevation of point number 1 to
“122.00” and select the green check box to close the panorama.

Type “ZZ” to zoom to a Civil 3D Point. When prompted type point number 1, then
select a location on the screen where you want the software to display the point. The
software will move to this point using the zoom ratio before the command was executed.
Roll the mouse wheel to zoom in on this point. Run the command again to observe point
number 10.

Type “CS” to open the create surface dialogue and build a surface named “EG” from the
“_All Points” point group. Display the surface using the “TIN LINES” style.

Type “FF” to flip the faces (Swap Edges) and use this routine to alter the orientation of
the 4 surface faces which cross the flow line at locations other than vertices. This will
force the faces to line up along the creek flow line and provide the same results as
running a standard or proximity breakline.

Type “LAZZ” and then select the surface to freeze this layer.

While on the layer “C-ROAD-CURB-FACE-NEWW”, draw a line from the x,y

coordinate pair 3500,100 72ft to the east. Draw another line from the east end of the
previous segment 10ft to the north.

Type “LG” and use the lengthen command to correct the length of this line so that it has a
total length of 15ft.

Type “CE” and draw a clockwise curve from the north end of this line segment having a
5ft radius and an interior angle of 90 degrees.

Type “MI” and mirror the last two segments to the west side about the midpoint of the
south line as reflected in the graphic below.

Type “IL” to inquire information about the west arc. This command will also report
information regarding the bearing and distances of lines.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ARC DATA

Arc Length: 7.85' Radius: 5.00' Delta: 090.0000 (d)

Type “IA” to inquire the angle between the two of the lines which make up the parking
lot.

Type “Peditaccept” and make sure that this variable is set to 1. Type “PEJ” and window
all of the segments to join them together in the form of a polyline.

Type “ST” to launch the text style dialogue box. Observe the text styles that are present
in the drawing. Exit the text style dialogue box and type “STL” to load text styles. Type

“ST” to launch the text style dialogue box and once again observe the text styles that are
present in the drawing. Pay particular attention to the current text style.

Type “VB” to generate a valve box having a height of “2” and a length of “2” inserted at
the coordinate pair (3501,101). This box will represent a catch basin in the parking lot.
Notice that the routine allows users to specify the orientation. The program is designed
to draw and place utility boxes in topographic maps when the survey crew surveyed the
center of the box. Use an angle of “0” when prompted.

Create a new layer titled “C-SDRN-SYMB-NEWW”, assign the color purple, the
linetype continuous and set this layer current. Type “LC” and then select the catch basin
inlet to place this object on the current layer.

Type “DR” and send the catch basin to the back so that its display is behind the curb.

Type “LAFF” and select the catch basin to turn this layer off.

Set the layer “C-ROAD-PVMT-PATT-NEWW” current and connect the NW and NE

corners of the parking lot as shown on the graphic below.

Type “H” and fill the enclosed area with a solid hatch.

Type “LOA” to turn on all layers. Notice that the catch basin doesn’t display because it
is behind the hatch. Although this is a result of our sending the catch basin to the back
with the draw order, this actually occurs frequently in Civil 3D without the user
manipulating the draw order. Type “HB” for hatch back and observe that the hatch is
sent behind all objects.

Observe the entries in the status bar below the AutoCAD environment.

Type “SB” and observe the changes to the status bar. The current text style, dimension
style, linescale and dview twist angle have all been added to the status bar. Type “SB”
again to restore the status bar to its original setting.

Set the layer “C-PKNG-STRP-NEWW” current. Draw a line over the top of the west

curb line which measures 15ft in length. Type “OM” to offset this stripe multiple times
9ft in the east direction. When using this command, the software will not prompt for an
offset side of the line. Negative numbers offset in the southwest direction and positive
offsets are to be typed for the northeast direction. For additional offsets hold down the
“Enter” key. When you want to exit the command simply type “N” to exit.

If you find the hatch highlight as a result of hovering the cursor over it annoying, then
this can be turned off by setting “Selectionpreview” to “0”.

Draw a line from the midpoint of the south edge of the catch basin south 20ft. Type
“SD” to initiate the create storm drain command. Type a diameter of “15” for 15 inches.
When prompted, type “N” for New. When prompted, select the line which you just drew.
Zoom in and look at the storm drain line that was created. This program works on lines,
arcs and polylines.

Change the Layer Isolate settings from “Lock and Fade” to “Off”. This can be
accomplished by typing “LAII” Enter “S” Enter “O” Enter Enter Enter.

Type “LAII” and select the curb to isolate this layer.

Type “SUM” and type “All” when prompted to select objects. Press the F2 key on the
keyboard to bring up the history. Notice that the command adds up and reports the
lengths of all lines, arcs and polylines selected. This program is handy when doing
material takeoffs and it is desirable to know the total length of objects. Press F2 again to
minimize the history window.

Type “LP” to bring back the previous layer state.

Zoom in on the southwest corner of storm drain which you recently created. If you knew
that the existing pipe invert at the south end had an elevation of 100ft, and that the storm

drain ran uphill to the north having a slope of 1%, you could compute the elevation at the
upper end with a calculator if you knew the length of the storm drain. The command
“ES” calculates elevations given an elevation in and a slope. Type “ES”. When
prompted for the Elevation Begin, enter “100”. When prompted for the Grade in % enter
“1”. When prompted for the distance, users can type in a distance, or pick two points in
the model space environment. Pick the ends of the storm drain using your object snaps
and the elevation at the northeast end will be reported as 100.2 at the command line.

The “HS” command may be used to calculate the slope given the elevations at two ends
of a feature and the distance between them. Type “HS”. When prompted for the
Elevation Begin, type “105.00”. When prompted for the Elevation End, type “105.36”.
When prompted for a distance, users can type a distance or pick the two points. When
prompted, select the SW and SE corners of the curb and Civil 3D reports a parking lot
slope of 0.5%.

The “NS” command interpolates elevations given two elevations and the distance
between the elevations. Type “NS”. When prompted for the Elevation Begin, type
“105”. When prompted for the Elevation End, type “105.36”. When prompted for the
distance between elevations, pick the select the SW and SE corners of the curb. When
asked for the distance to the interpolation point, simply pick the first point previously
chosen and then a point along the curb to obtain the elevation.

Type “TL” to toggle into the paperspace environment. The “TL” (Tile) command
changes back and forth from paperspace to model space and sets your variables
“Psltscale” and “Ltscale” appropriately each time users toggle back and forth between
environments.

While on the “C-ANNO-VPRT” layer, create a landscape 36ft x 24ft viewport. This next
tool allows users to implement a dview twist by merely selecting two points on any
object. Type “DVL” for Dview line. When prompted, pick two points along the most
southerly creek flow line segment. The objects in the viewport have been graphically
rotated to your preferred orientation. Type “DS” to automatically set your snap angle
orthogonal for any dview twist orientation.

Set the scale to 1”=10’ and center the creek in the viewport.

Type “VLO” to lock the display of all viewports on a layout. “VLF” can be used to
unlock the display of all viewports within a layout.

You are encouraged to explore the other utilities and linetypes in the Civil/Survey tool
pack, but they are not required to complete this lesson. Save and exit your drawing. You
have successfully completed this assignment.
