EEET2263 – Tutorial #1, Single Phase AC Networks

1. Use phasors to calculate the sum of the two voltages v1 (t ) = 100 cos(ωt ) and v 2 (t ) = 50 sin (ωt ) .
Draw a phasor diagram for your calculation, and express the result in both phasor form and in
time varying form vt (t ) = Vt cos(ωt + θ ) .

6. Two loads are connected in parallel across a 250V rms ac supply. Load A consumes 10 kW at a
power factor of 0.9 lagging. Load B consumes a power of 15 KVA at a power factor of 0.8
lagging.
Find the real, reactive and apparent power delivered by the source. What is the power factor
seen by the source?

7. For question 6 determine the shunt capacitance required to achieve a lagging power factor of
0.9, unity power factor and a leading power factor of 0.85.

a. The peak voltage across the capacitor when it is connected to a 460V source (650.5V)
b. The resulting energy stored in the capacitor at that instant in joules (73 J).
7-26 A 12.5 kV, 60 Hz single-phase line connects a substation to an industrial load. The line has a
resistance of 2.4 Ω, and a reactance of 12 Ω. The metering equipment at the substation
indicates that the line voltage is 12 kV, and that the line is drawing 3 MW of active power and
3 Mvar of reactive power. Calculate:
a. the current flowing in the line (353.6 A)
b. The active and reactive power consumed by the line (300 kW, 1.5 MVAr)
c. The active, reactive and apparent power absorbed by the load (2.7 MW, 1.5 MVAr,
3.09 MVA)
d. The voltage across the load (8.74 kV).
7-27 A 2 hp (1hp = 746W), 230V, 1725 rpm, 60 Hz, single phase washdown duty motor
manufactured by Baldor Electric Company, has the following characteristics:

Efficiency: 75.5%
Power factor: 74%
Weight: 80 lb
a. Calculate the active and reactive power absorbed by the machine when it operates at
full load (1976 W, 1796 Var)
b. If a 40 μf capacitor is connected across the motor teminals, calculate the line current
feeding the motor (9.6A)
c. Will the presence of the capacitor affect the temperature of the motor ?
