KITCHEN REMODEL

The Springer Family recently purchased an Arts & Crafts style
house, built in 1910. They are in the process of renovating many
elements in the interior, focusing on incorporating the home’s
original design. Alexis and Cory want to restore the kitchen
and update the bath, adding modern updates. Maintaining
the original design, the remodel will add a new sheen to the
Arts & Crafts style the house already possesses.
CONCEPT
In order to maximize the space in the kitchen, the Springers
have decided to remove the half-bath located in the space.
The mudroom on the ground floor was renovated into a full
bath. Grandma and Grandpa Springer come to visit often,
so the new bathroom will act as the guest bathroom. It was
imperative that storage be added; guests will need space to
change and prepare for the day.

The kitchen now has sage green paint, with wood remaining
the focus; adorning the cabinetry, shelving, the built-in seating
area, crown moulding and baseboard detailing were added
to work with the original design. The flooring of the kitchen is
now a deep brown, rectangular ceramic tile. Wine storage and
warming drawers were added to the revived butler’s pantry
area adjacent to the dining room door. The countertops are
sustainable Fuezstone complemented by stainless steel
appliances. From this inconspicuous base, a multi-funtional
area was created; incorporating cooking, dining, storage space,
laundry space, and a butler’s pantry.

There is a great amount of storage, not only in the kichen
cabinets, but in the island and built-in shelving. Under the bar
seating area, there are pull-out drawers for the kids to store
anything they wish. In the far corner of the kitchen, next the
pantry are floor-to-ceiling shelves, housing school supplies,
a printer and laptops (there will be an outlet installed, of
course). Alexis was pleased to know there is a laundry area,
too. Cory’s wine storage holds 160 bottles of wine, with dual
temperature centers. The built-in seating is upholstered with
a durable, washable and anti-microbial nylon fabric.

Staying with the original plan, the design “warms up” the
bathroom in a common Arts & Crafts style. It was painted
a warm mauve with a warm gray chair rail; beadboard
wainscoting adorns the entire room. Crown moulding and
baseboard detailing was added to match the chair rail
installment. Remaining woodwork in the bathroom is crafted
of cherry hardwood, stained in a natural, warm tone. The
window has frosted glazing, for privacy and natural light. The
shower is tiled in a creamy porceain tile, visible through the
plated glass sides.

The countertop and backsplash incorporate a luxurious piece
of marble with graining of all the colors used. Not only does the
lavatory have storage below, it has a small bench with a cushion
upholtered in a deep brown mohair. The fixtures and hardware
in the bathroom are brushed bronze. The cool natural porcelain
finish was chosen for fixtures, including an above counter wash
basin. The lighting is the same style, with pendant lighting
above the sink area, a single large element above the shower,
and a small spot to display the beautiful stained art glass above
the toilet. The flooring is the same as in the shower.
