Question Tags en inglés, qué son y cómo se utilizan en

Las question tags en inglés son como su nombre indica questions, que se pegan a una
afirmación que una persona ha hecho. Se utiliza cuando queremos verificar la afirmación
expresada, porque no estamos 100% seguros de ella. En español también tenemos una
equivalencia, es nuestro ¿verdad? o ¿no?.

Ejemplo (Spanish): hace frío, ¿verdad? = it is cold, isn’t it? (English)

Bien, como ves, en ambos ejemplos la question tag va pegada a la oración anterior. Si
analizamos el ejemplo en inglés, tenemos lo siguiente:

Subject + verb + complement + coma + verb to be en

negativo + sujeto.

¿Cómo se forma las question tags?

1. auxiliar, negativo si la oración de delante es positiva, y positivo si la oración anterior
es negativa. En el ejemplo de arriba, como la oración anterior es positiva (is), la
question tag va en negativa (isn’t).
2. sujeto, que debe ser el mismo que el de la oración anterior.

Te recuerdo los distintos auxiliares que podemos encontrar en inglés, dependiendo del
tiempo verbal:

1. PRESENT SIMPLE: do / does (3ª persona del singular)

2. PAST SIMPLE: did
3. PRESENT PERFECT: have / has (3ª persona del singular)
4. PAST PERFECT: had
5. PRESENT CONTINUOUS: are / is
6. PAST CONTINUOUS: were / was
7. FUTURE: will
8. CONDITIONAL: would

Los verbos que se forman con el verbo to be, es el to be el que hace de auxiliar,
como en present y past continuous. Y lo mismo sucede si en nuestra oración,
utilizamos el verbo to be (ser o estar), en la question tag tenemos que utilizar el
verbo to be.

EJEMPLOS:

1. You like tea, dón’t you? = te gusta el té, ¿verdad? = PRESENT SIMPLE
2. He told you the truth, didn’t he? = te dijo la verdad, ¿no? = PAST SIMPLE

4. Mary hadn’t seen her grandparents for ages, had she? = María no veía a sus abuelos
desde hacía años, ¿verdad? = PAST PERFECT
5. Your brother is studying a vocational training, isn’t he? = tu hermano está estudiando
un ciclo formativo, ¿no? = PRESENT CONTINUOUS
6. You were doing sport yesterday at 8pm, weren’t you? = estabas haciendo deporte
ayer a las 8 de la tarde, ¿verdad? = PAST CONTINUOUS
7. I won’t see you tomorrow, will I? = no te veré mañana, ¿verdad? = FUTURE WITH
WILL
8. Your sister wouldn’t live abroad, would she? = tu hermana no viviría en el extranjero,
¿no? = CONDITIONAL
9. Your boss is angry, isn’t he? = tu jefe está enfadado, ¿verdad? = VERB TO BE
10. It isn’t sunny, is it? = no hace sol, ¿verdad? = VERB TO BE

Si observas las question tags, son negativas si las oraciones anteriores son positivas, y
son positivas si las oraciones anteriores son negativas.

Translate the following sentences into English.

1. Me llamaste ayer, ¿verdad?

2. No te gusta la playa, ¿verdad?
3. Eres informático, ¿no?
4. Hace viento en tu pueblo, ¿verdad?
5. Estas leyendo cuando ellos llegaron, ¿no?
6. Irás, ¿no?
7. No crees que ellos están contento, ¿verdad?
8. No aceptarías su invitación, ¿verdad?
9. Te gustaría ir, ¿no?
10. Ella está desayunando, ¿no?

KEYS:

1. Me llamaste ayer, ¿verdad? = you phoned me yestarday, didn’t you?

2. No te gusta la playa, ¿verdad? = you don’t like the beach, do you?
3. Eres informático, ¿no? = you are an IT, aren’t you?
4. Hace viento en tu pueblo, ¿verdad? = it’s windy in your town, isn’t it?
5. Estabas leyendo cuando ellos llegaron, ¿no? = you were reading when they arrived,
weren’t you?
6. Irás, ¿no? = you will go, won’t you?
7. No crees que ellos están contento, ¿verdad? = you don’t think they are happy, do
you?
8. No aceptarías su invitación, ¿verdad? = you wouldn’t accept her invitation, would
you?
9. Te gustaría ir, ¿no? = you would like to go, wouldn’t you?
10. Ella está desayunando, ¿no? = she is having breakfast, isn’t she?
