III. DESIGN AND SIMULATION OF GATE VALVE

A. Design And Assembly Of The Parts Of The Gate Valve

The design and assembly of the gate valve procedures are

as in the flowchart in Figure 1. The dimension of each part is
defined in detail in order to mate together in the assembly
process to become a completed object [4]. Each part of the
gate valve that is already mated together should not have any
gaps between them, as they will cause problems when the
simulation study is carried out. All parts are given names so
that the procedures are neat and orderly. The parts for this
project are named hand wheel, gasket, lock handle, valve
body, bonnet, valve pipe and valve stem.

After the part modeling, the individual part is assembled

into a single assembly file. The movement and animation are
introduced in motion study by using the rotation, key frames
and exploded view for a better result. Then, proceed to the
simulation study.

Figure 2 (a) shows the four views that display a four view
viewport with 1st or 3rd angle projection. Figure 2 (b) shows
the exploded view of the complete components that were used
to assemble the gate valve.
Figure 1: Methodology Flowchart

C. Part Module
The assembly module is where all the individual parts in
part module are combined together to become a complete 3D
object. There are two main types of design methods, which is
a) Bottom-up and b) Top-down design or a combination of
both methods. For top-down design, the combination of one or
more features of a part can be resized and correct the model
parts. The design intent comes from the assembly and moves
into the parts module [5].
In assembly, mates are important in combining one or
more parts as it creates geometric relationships between the
assembly components. In SolidWorks, mates property
manager provide a various selection that helps to combine the
parts such as coincident, concentric, distance, gear, screw, etc.
Besides that, the assemble parts can be viewed rotationally
and exploded by using the interface called motion manager
tools. The motion manager enables to create animations
showing motion of parts and assemblies based on a timeline Figure 2 (a): Gate Valve with 4 different angle views

IV. RESULT AND DISCUSSION

The completed model of the gate valve is assembled using
a combination of the user interface It was then tested using
the flow simulation study and its operation and movement is
then analyzed using motion study [4].

A. Flow Simulation Study

Analysis of the valve body was conducted on various

parameters such as pressure, velocity and density of various
types of liquids transported via the valve body during the flow
simulation process. An example of a liquid used in the
simulation is water.
Equations 1 and 2 below was used to calculate flowrate
and pressure in order to simulate flowrate in the gate valve.

pressure drop of (1Pa)
P2 = upstream pressure (1 Pa)
P1 = downstream pressure (1 Pa)

Velocity of the fluid can be measured by using the

B. Simulation of The Gate Valve A. CASE 1 - Flow Simulation Analysis of the Gate Valve in
OPEN CONDITION.
Simulation study was introduced in SolidWorks to enable
engineers to perform analysis of the performance of the
developed product. In this project, the aalve body was
selected at a specific region by the boundary conditions to be
analyzed. The analysis will be carried out on pressure, density
(fluid) and velocity that give the valve body impact when
liquids flow into the gate valve. The selection of the materials
of the gate valve model depends on the fluid properties and
details of the specifications. The properties of the fluid that is
to be transported via the gate valve i.e the flow rate to be
controlled have a major impact on the design and material of
construction of the valve body. Thus, the valve design must
consider factors. For example if corrosion and erosion could Figure 4: Solid Body Assembly of Gate Valve with the Pipe in Open
be a problem due to the type of liquid, then the valve body Condition
material that is selected must be able to withstand the
corrosive effect and maximum pressure in the system. One of Case 1: The analysis of the valve body is carried out on the
