INTRODUCTION TO SPACE AND GRAVITY GRAVITATIONAL FIELD STRENGTH IMPORTANCE OF GRAVITY

-There are eight planets that orbit the -Therefore all the planets have -The gravitational field strength of the
Sun. They are known as Mercury, gravitational pull. The formula states that Earth keeps the Moon in orbit, whilst
Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, to calculate the weight, mass in kg should the much larger gravitational field
Uranus and Neptune. multiply with the gravitational field strength of the Sun keeps the Earth
strength. and all the planets in orbit around it.

-The Sun is the centre of solar system.

-The Earth has a gravitational field
strength (g) of 10 Newtons per kilogaram,
-Prevents objects and us from floating
which is written as=g=10N/kg. away intospace from Earth.
-All the planets fall in 2 groups:
*Inner planets: Mercury, Venus,
-Weight=mass x gravitational field
Earth and Mars. strength (g).
*Outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, -On other planets, the value of (g) will
differ;
Uranus and Neptune
Mercury=4N/kg
(The inner planets are the closest to
the Sun compared to the outer Venus=9N/kg
planets.) Mars=4N/kg
Jupiter=25N/kg
Saturn=11N/kg
Uranus=9N/kg
Neptune=12N/kg
