DETAILED LESSON PLAN

SCIENCE 10

I. Learning Objectives:

Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:

A. Identify and understand the functions and structure of the nervous system
B. Explain the actions of the motor and sensory neurons in the body
C. Explain the coordinated functions of the nervous system to the different parts of the
body

II. Subject Matter

Topic/Lesson: FUNCTIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Reference: Spiral Science 10
Deped ALS learning material
Instructional Materials: Brain Hat, Cartolina, Chalk, Marker

III. Strategy/Procedure

A. Pre- Activity

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY

May we all stand for the prayer? Who Assigned learner for the day will lead

B. Motivation

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY

Okay class, we will start our activity

for today.

This activity is called the “brain hat

activity”

Are you familiar with this activity? No ma’am

Okay, since you guys are not Okay ma’am

familiar with this activity I will explain
the mechanics of the activity:

1. First, I will be needing 6

volunteers to come up here in
front
2. One of the 6 learners will be
wearing the brain hat. He/she
will represent the brain
3. The remaining 5 learners will be
the 5 senses
 Sight
 Hearing
 Touch
 Taste
 Smell
4. The one who is representing the
brain will be positioned in the
middle and the rest of the 5
senses will be positioned in front
of the learner who is
representing the brain
5. The teacher or facilitator will give
certain cards or objects to the 5
senses that they will have to
relay to the brain
6. After each sense relay their
objects, the brain should react,
describe or identify the things
that each senses relayed.
7. The learner representing the
brain will be blindfolded. Blind
fold will be removed once the
sense of sight will relay its
object.

Do you guys understand? Yes ma’am

Any questions or clarifications? No ma’am

Okay let’s start Okay ma’am

Teacher/ facilitator will guide learners in Learners will do the brain hat activity
the activity

Okay well done class, you may now take Thank you ma’am
your seat
C. Discussion proper

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY

With the brain hat activity that we have It represents the nervous system ma’am
done, can you tell me what system of the
body did our activity represent?

With your observation, what could be the Learners will raise their hands and
function of our nervous system? describe the functions of the nervous
system

Very well said, so, the nervous system has

four major functions: 1. Sensory function 2.
Motor function 3. Autonomic or involuntary
function 4. Cognitive function

Can anybody give me an example of the Learner’s raise their hands and answer
sensory function of the nervous system?

So those examples that you have given

have something to do with the 5 senses of
the body. Our nervous system picks up
stimuli. Now, stimuli are signals from the
environment or within our body that we
respond to. For example, your eyes saw
an apple, your eyes respond to the stimuli
and send signal to your brain, and your
brain will transmit the signal through your
nerves and tell you how to respond to the
information sent by your eyes.

Could you give other examples of the Learner’s raise their hands and gives
sensory function of the nervous system? example

Now, for the motor functions, it helps our

body move. Impulses make our muscle
contract. For example, when we walk our
nervous system sends impulses to move
our leg and move, in line with this it will
also help us choose what speed to take or
use

For example, what will your body normally Learners will answer that they will walk
do, if you walk yourself to school and you faster or run.
are running late? What would you do?

For, the involuntary function, this helps our

organs and body to function just like our
heart

Can anybody tell me any organs that Learners will raise their hands and answer
works voluntary

Lastly, the cognitive functions which is

related to thinking, planning and learning.

Did you guys understand the functions of Yes ma’am

the nervous system?

Ok. Since we tackled about the functions Yes ma’am

of the nervous system, do you have any
idea what are the parts of the nervous
system?

Can you name some of the parts of the Learners will raise their hands and answer.
nervous system?
(Brain, spinal cord, nerves, etc.)

Okay very good!

Our nervous system has two major Central nervous system and peripheral
divisions. Does anybody have an idea nervous system ma’am
what are these two divisions are?

That’s correct.

The two major division of our nervous

system are

1. Central nervous system- it serves

as the command center of the entire
body

The brain and the spinal cord have

an important role in the central
nervous system.

A. Brain- it weighs approximately

1.4kg
- It contains 100 billion
interneurons
- It serves as the main
switching unit of the CNS

The parts of the brain may be grouped as

follows:

I. Forebrain

a. Cerebrum- largest part of the

human brain it is divided in
left and right hemispheres
- It processes sensory inputs
and controls skeletal muscle
activity
- It is the site that administers
intelligence, emotions,
learning and judgment

What side of the body does the right and Learners will raise their hands and answer
left hemisphere control?

The right hemisphere control the left side

of the body and the left hemisphere
controls the right side of the body.

b. Thalamus- it receives all

information sent by the
sensory organs except
olfactory and sends it to a
specific region of the
cerebrum for further
processing

c. Hypothalamus- located
below the thalamus
- It controls recognition and
analysis of thirst, hunger,
anger and temperature of the
internal environment of the
body

II. Midbrain- it is responsible for

motor coordination and relays
sensory input to the forebrain
III. Hindbrain

a. Pons- serves as the bridge

between the cerebrum and
cerebellum
- Together with the medulla
oblongata, it controls the rate
and depth of respiration

b. Cerebellum- second largest

part of the brain
- Located below the cerebrum
at the back part of the brain
- Responsible for the
coordination and balance
action of the muscles so the
body can maintain posture

c. Medulla oblongata-
transmits information
between the spinal cord and
the brain
- Affects heart rate and
respiratory rate

Do you understand the parts of the brain? Yes ma’am

Can you now understand how amazing the Yes ma’am

brain is? And how it controls our body?

Again, what is the other part of the central

nervous system aside from the brain? The spinal cord ma’am

Can you locate where your spinal cord is? Learners will stand up and locate his/her
spinal cord. He or she will show that the
Can everybody stand up and let’s locate spinal cord starts from the nape up to the
our spinal cord. as far down of the back as the can feel the
column of bones

Another part of the central nervous system

is the spinal cord

B. Spinal Cord-relays impulses

between the peripheral nervous
system and the brain and vice
versa.
- It is also involved in reflex

reflex- is an automatic response of the

body to stimuli in the environment
