Lesson Plan

Objective: To teach and transfer the knowledge of Choice Theory in regards to teaching and
classroom structure. To define the Theory with a clear and precise PowerPoint presentation.

Materials: PowerPoint slide show. A Youtube video in the words of Dr. William Glasser.
Computer and Projector to show the PowerPoint Presentation. Partial syllabus handout for a
course teaching the Choice Theory along with a few other quotes and ideas of Choice Theory.
Instruction:

Outline for Lesson Plan

What is a Democratic Classroom by William Glasser and Choice Theory?

Slide #1: Introduce myself and the topic to which we will be learning about today.
Slide #2- Who is William Glasser? World renowned Psychiatrist. Has schools all of the world to
teach his Choice Theory. He believes bad behavior is a result of the lacking of one of the 5 basic
needs.
Slide #3- What is Choice Theory? Think about all of the choices we make every day. Choice
Theory lets the students decide what the rules are and the curriculum.
Slide #4- What is a Democratic classroom? It is a classroom that is decided upon by students and
teachers. It is about mutual respect. The students are held to higher standard because they pick
the rules and what they learn. The teacher plans meaningful work based on the students picked
curriculum.
Slide #5- Ten Axioms, (a statement or proposition that is regarded as being established,
accepted, or self-evidently true) of Choice Theory as described by Dr. Glasser. Read them out
loud and see if anyone has any thoughts.
Slide #6- The 5 Basic Needs proposed by Dr. Glasser to Choice Theory. The basic needs are
self-directing capabilities that is required to fulfill life needs. If continuous fulfilled the result
will be a “good life”.

 Physical Need:
Survival- Mandates that we behave in ways that produce food, shelter and safety.
 Psychological Needs:
1 .Love and Belonging- Requires we connect with world. To feel accepted and with people
who love and care for us. This is the most important of the needs.
2. Power- Knowledge and skill are the fundamentals for self-esteem. Demands that we
learn, gain knowledge.
3. Fun- To behave in ways that bring joy and satisfaction to one’s life. Having fun
strengthens one psychologically and physically.
4. Freedom- To be in control of one’s life. Set goals, make plans and choose behaviors.

Slide #7- An Example of a Choice Theory Teaching. Examples of curriculum, instruction and
assessment. Teachers don’t mind if students help other children and they test with notes
and books.

Slide #8- The criteria for a Glasser School as stated on their website. Discuss the difference
between public school and Glasser school.
Slide #9- Quotes by Dr. Glasser. Read and think about how they pertain our lives. His Choice
Theory is also a guide for all relationships in our lives.

Slide #10- Watch a video of Dr. Glasser explaining Choice Theory in his own words.

Slide #11- My thoughts. I will give a brief explanation of my thoughts.

Slide #12- A Powtoon video I made about what the classroom would be like. A quote by Dr.
Glasser out of our book.

Closure: Discuss the presentation. Go over the partial syllabus used to teach Choice Theory.
Talk about the 7 habits and the percentage of what we learn. Answer any questions and
ask for feedback. Ask class if they would choose a Choice Theory classroom. Ask why or
why not?
