INTRODUCTION.
Due to some mistake latest batch on pieces of steel have a different composition to the one which was
specified. The properties of this steel are satisfactory but the question arises whether the usual heat-
treatment will be the correct one also for this steel.

As an experienced physical metallurgist here is my report about consideration whether heat-treatment

will be the correct one also for this steel.

Objective : Find suitable temperatur and time needed to obtain

the general microstructure of the steel consists of a banded structure with 50% ferrite and 50% austenite
with an average distance between the grains of 100 µm. The general process for obtaining this structure
is a heat-treatment where the material is first heated to temperature that lies in the center range between
the melting temperature and the temperature where the first austenite forms, at this temperature the
material will be fully ferritic. The temperature is then lowered at a rate of 25 K/s to a temperature slightly
below where the equilibrium between 50% ferrite and 50% austenite forms (say the temperature where
one obtains 49% ferrite and 51% austenite). The material is then held at this temperature until 50% of
austenite has formed and is thereafter quenched down to room temperature.

Given composition :

Composition %Cr % Mo %Ni

(weight %) 21 3 10

Analysis tool : Thermo-calc DICTRA

Methods :

1. Using consol mode Thermo-calc

2. Find temperatur needed in for achieving objection
3. Plot graph

Result :

Temperatur obtained

1. T1= Melting Temmperatur =1747.1541 K

2. T2=Temperature FCC = 1636,1277 K
3. T3= Starting temperatur heat treatment =1723.4345 K

4. T4= Temperature equilibrium (49% ferrite and 51% austenite)
5. T5=Isothermal heat thermal temperatur = 1460.9673 K

As result

You are in charge of the heat-treatment of a stainless steel grade in the manufacturing of a specific part,
the general microstructure of the steel consists of a banded structure with 50% ferrite and 50%
austenite with an average distance between the grains of 100 µm. The general process for obtaining this
structure is a heat-treatment where the material is first heated to temperature that lies in the center
range between the melting temperature and the temperature where the first austenite forms, at this
temperature the material will be fully ferritic. The temperature is then lowered at a rate of 25 K/s to a
temperature slightly below where the equilibrium between 50% ferrite and 50% austenite forms (say
the temperature where one obtains 49% ferrite and 51% austenite). The material is then held at this
temperature until 50% of austenite has formed and is thereafter quenched down to room temperature.

Due to some mistake in the order department the latest batch on pieces of steel have a different
composition to the one which was specified, the properties of this steel are satisfactory but the question
arises whether the usual heat-treatment will be the correct one also for this steel.

Being an experienced physical metallurgist (at least that is what you had your boss to think considering
that a raise in salary has been mentioned), you volunteer to do some calculations in order to check what
is an appropriate heat-treatment for these pieces. You know that you can use the software tools
Thermo-Calc and DICTRA to solve this.

The chemical analysis of the steel has been analyzed at the company’s chemical laboratory and the
results from this analysis are waiting for you to be picked up (check with Lars).
