Police brutality has been around since the late 1960’s but it has mostly been happening in
2017 due to the number of killings. This has been the worst year as the whole United States has
been experiencing police brutality but it has been mostly common for colored people. People all
over the United States started doing rallies protesting about police killing, a lot of people came
In 2017 there were 1,147 kills. 25% (282) of those killed were black people. Black
people are 3 times more likely to get killed by the police than white people. 30% of the black
victims were unarmed compared to 21% of the white victims. There was only 14 days in the
whole year that the police did not kill someone. 92% of the victims were killed in shootings. The
other 8% were killed by tasers, physical force, and police vehicles. Officers were only charged
with crime in 13 of these cases which was only 1% of all killings by police. 9 of the 13 cases had
Officers who were identified in 569 cases that only 48 had shot or killed someone before.
12 had multiple prior shootings. Most killings began with police responding to suspected non
violent offences or cases were no crime was reported. 89 people were killed after police stopped
them for a traffic violation. 149 people were killed by police were unarmed. Most unarmed
people who were killed by police were people of color. Black people were most likely to killed
by police, most likely to be unarmed and less likely to be threatening someone when killed. 112
killed by a police had a vehicle as a weapon. 96 of the people were killed when police shot at a
moving vehicle, a practice that many experts believe that it should be banned. Experts, law
enforcement groups and the US department of justice recommend that police be banned from
shooting people in moving vehicles. These shootings are ineffective and dangerous since
shooting the driver makes the vehicle an uncontrollable threat to both the police officers and the
public.
In my opinion i believe that police should not open fire towards citizens unless they have
a gun but also they shouldn't try to go for the kill right away, i think that they should just fire
where the suspect is holding the weapon but because most of the killings are against people
unarmed they should just use their pepper spray or their tasers instead of their guns.
