Procedure

1. A clean and dry 250-mL Erlenmeyer flask was weighed using an analytical balance.

2. Aluminum foil was prepared and a hole was pinched on it using a small pin

3. The empty flask was then weigh without a cover.

4. 5 ml of ethyl alcohol was carefully poured in the flask and covered by an aluminum
foil.

5. By controlling or regulating the amount of heat being received by the water bath
through the burner, a temperature of 750C should be maintained.

6. Once the all of the liquid vaporized and when you make sure that no vapor is left on
the flask then you should remove it from the bath and make sure to cool it at room
tempearature.

7. Using an analytical balance, weigh the condensed liquid and then using the
thermometer , measure its temaperature.

8. To get the volume of the flask, fill it with distilled water up to the brim and measure the
volume in a graduated cylinder. Record also the temperature.

9. Three trials should be made.

10. Repeat these using ethyl acetate.

Raw Data
Analysis of Data & Sample Caculation

 To determine the mass of the condensed unknown :

Mass of flask and condensed liquid - Mass of empty flask and cover = Mass of condensed gas

Therefore : (From Trial 1, ethyl alohol) 124. 052 g. – 123.567 g. = 0.485 g.

(From Trial 1, ethyl acetate) 99.667 g. – 98.738 g. = 0.485 g.

 To determine the mass of distilled H2O, assuming that the density of water is 1.00 g/cm3
:

Mass of flask with distilled H2O - Mass of empty flask and cover = Mass of distilled water :

Therefore : (From Trial 1, ethyl alohol) 285 g. – 123. 567 g = 161.43 g.

(From Trial 1, ethyl acetate)270 g. – 98.738 = 171.62 g.

 To calculate for the experimental molar mass of the volatile liquid sample :

PV=nRT

PV = m/MMRT

MM(PV)=mRT

MM =mRT
PV

For trial 1 : (ethyl aclcohol ) : MM = (0.485 g ) (0.08201 Latm/molK) (28+273)K

(0.959 atm) (0.16143 L)

= 77.16 g/mol

For trial 1 : (ethyl acetate ) : MM = (0.976 g ) (0.08201 Latm/molK) (28+273)K

(0.959 atm) (0.17126 L)

= 140.09 g/mol

Calculate the percent error for experimental molar mass assuming the unknown volatile liquid
was ethyl alcohol (C2H6O).

For trial 1 : (ethyl alcohol )

MM (C2H6O) = 46.07 g/mol

77.16 – 46.07
46.07 x 100 = 67.48 %
