Offshore Wind Farm Design OE44120

Practical Assignment

P2a: Argoss
Assignment
Gather all relevant wind and wave data for the preferred site you selected for your Offshore
Wind Farm during P1. Be aware that you will need this data throughout the rest of the course,
and that your username and password expire at the end of the day.

Before you access the database, make a list of the relevant wind and wave data that you need.
Keep in mind the following aspects: wind farm layout, annual energy yield, support structure
design, installation process, O&M, etcetera. In case that the data for your preferred site is
missing or not quite as you expected, you are allowed to revert back to one of the other three
sites which you selected during P1.

N.B. A directional Weibull distribution will be necessary for the layout design, thus collect
the data you need in order to derive it.

P2b: Turbine Selection

Assignment
Try to gather as much information as possible for at least three turbines with different
characteristics, so that you can select the one that yields the maximum annual energy
production (AEP) for the chosen site. While selecting your turbine try to take into account the
effect of wake losses inside a farm.

The steps to obtain the annual energy yield for each of the turbines are:
1. Fit a Weibull distribution to the histogram of wind speeds at your site.
2. Convert the Weibull distribution to the correct height. Consult the design guidelines
where needed.
3. Combine the power curve of each of the possible turbines with the obtained Weibull
distribution, in order to obtain the AEP.

Available Tools
 Slides from the lecture “Environmental conditions – Wind” and “Wind Turbine
Selection”.

Deliverables
Document your findings calculations and conclusions regarding the turbine selection in no
more than 1000 words. Please upload it to BS no later than the 27th of February at 12.00.
