Date: 4/26/17
Inspired by the architect/engineer Santiago Calatrava, this piece brings repeated
use of long, thin & straight pieces of wood to create a structure that changes the
space/path of the area, gesturing outwards towards the lake, setting the viewer up for
observation. It experiments with the idea of light, path, form and space.

The rose comes in many colors and has many meanings. One hopes that the red
roses you receive won't turn black. Based on cultural and aesthetic (art nouveau) uses
of the flower crown, this piece is a representation of grief, loss and sadness.

Title: SERVE: HEAVEN

The piece “SERVE: HEAVEN” is the first part of a two part series, exploring the
religious theme of angels. The piece was created to give off the impression that this is a
soldier of heaven, a being in servitude. It was made through the block-printing process,
inspired by the painter Ingres in anatomy and religious themes.

Title: SERVE: HUMANITY

This piece was created along with the block print piece, on a series about angels,
warriors of God. This piece explores the concept of a fallen angel, one who's broken
through the essence of a dutiful soldier, one who has decided humanity over heaven. It
was inspired by the painter Ingres in anatomy and religious themes.

This piece was created to convey a part of me. I used the bluntness of Barbara
Kruger and the use of text in her work as inspiration to convey a sense of ephemeral
being. The water reminds the viewer of drowning, yet also supports a fluid and
transparent calm as I’m not shown in the piece struggling. I used photography and
Photoshop to create the piece and convey all the ideas I wanted to get out, parts of me I
wanted the viewer to really understand.

Title: We Mustn't Dilly or Dally

For my Ephemera I carved a pumpkin, putting together easily identifiable images
from Tim Burton films, those that were the highlight of my childhood and influenced me
as an artist. Burton's German Expressionist influence was a big consideration in how I
made the piece (placement, choices, shading, etc.).

Capturing gesture and light, this piece is a Renaissance-Esq photo that puts forth
an essence of something biblical. Exploring the manipulation of light through something
modern and commercial like Christmas lights, it takes an object and redefines it so it's
no longer the lights on the tree but the modern crown of thorns. Incorporating an arm in
the manipulation, it explores a natural and relaxed study of human form, if only one part
of it.

Title: Walk It Off

This piece is a commentary on the general view of mental health in this country.
Using graphic wounds to represent mental health issues (like depression, anxiety,
bipolar disorder, etc.), students are placed in regular school environments doing daily
things, living with this pain.Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.

This piece, inspired by Neoclassicism, is meant to capture the small details of a
big emotion. The simplicity of this scene is able to convey broad feelings of anxiousness
and anxiety as generalizable human experiences. Sometimes forgotten, details like the
movement/position of the hands can show much more than our faces.

Title: Baby Boy

This piece was inspired by "Crying Girl" by Roy Lichtenstein. It's opening up a
conversation about the effects society has on boys in imposing this idealized
masculinity on them, encouraging a lack of emotion. These standards apply more
heavily to trans individuals, such as myself. I do suffer from mental illness, I do cry, I do
feel small, and those things don't make me less of a man.

Title: That’s Not My Name

This piece took inspiration from Andy Warhol’s series of polaroids as well as a
shared experience in the trans community. Using pictures of trans people when they
were young, generally happy memories shown, I showed a duality of having nostalgia
for good times but having them turn bad in retrospect. Wanting to disown that you but
wanting to hold onto those good memories as well. I turned these photographs into
polaroids to show nostalgia and burned them to show the bitterness.
