1. SCOPE
This technical specification establishes the characteristics and applicability of zinc
coatings with sealed white chrome passivation (hexavalent chrome free) on ferrous
materials.

Coatings in accordance with the new EU 2000/53/CE directive.

2. APPLICABILITY

The application of this standard is intend for all the Ducati’s components which are
exposed in environments particularly subjected to oxidation.

4. CLASS AND APPLICATIONS

The coating solutions allowed in this technical standard are shown in the table
below :

Class Description

Fe/Zn 5 BS Zinc-coating 5 μm (±1 μm) white hex-chrome free

passivation, sealed.
Fe/Zn 7 BS Zinc- coating 7 μm (±1 μm) white hex-chrome free
passivation, sealed.
Fe/Zn 12 BS Zinc- coating 12 μm (±1 μm) white hex-chrome free
passivation, sealed.

- For threaded components (bolts, nuts, threaded components in general) the

thickness of zinc coating is defined in par.6.
- For all non-threaded components (plates, non-threaded shaft, etc) use one
thickness of zinc coating of 12 μm.

5. CORROSION RESISTANCE

5.1 TEST MACHINE AND PARAMETERS

he test shall be run in accordance with UNI ISO 9227 using the neutral salt
spray test (NSS) after at least 24 hours after application of the coating.

5.2 SAMPLING

Type Quantity
Bolts, special bolts, nuts, special 5 units min.
nuts.
Remainder ( shafts, sheet steel 1 unit min.
brackets, etc.)

5.3 PREPARATION OF THE SAMPLES

Before running the test the parts must be exposed in a ventilated

thermostatic cell for 1 h@ 120 ± 5°C.

5.5 EVALUATION OF RESULTS

After NSS test, the corrosion products quantity must be evaluated by a

visual test. The standard photographs in attachment must be used for rust
evaluation as follow :
- The quantity of white rust shown in photo 1 is acceptable.
- The quantity of white rust shown in photo 2 is not acceptable.
- In every case red rust ( photo 3) is never acceptable.

6.2 NUTS

Tolerance classes H and G the nominal zinc coating thickness is 12

microns.

7. THICKNESS CONTROL
Significant surface: all surfaces
Control method : Magnetic induction in accordance with ISO 2178.( this method
has to be used for the production and in case of claim).
Sampling: 20 units/batch.

8. HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT RELIEF AFTER ELECTROPLATING

All parts with tensile strength Rm ≥ 1000 MPa ( corresponding hardness 300
HV10, 303 HBW or 31 HRC including strength grade 10.9) must be subjected to
heat treatment ,after electoplating to minimize the risk of hydrogen embrittlement.

The heat treatment at 190- 220 °C for 8h must be done not later than 4 hours
after electrolytic Zn coating (before sealing).

9. DRAWING INFORMATIONS

In the drawings field “Surface finish/colour” report only the indication : “Surface
coating according to ST_STR_008”.

10. PRODUCT CERTIFICATION
