Dear

Miller Families,

This notice is to provide you additional information regarding police activity around
campus today. We want to make sure that you have accurate information and dispel
any rumors you may have heard.

Late yesterday night, Springfield Police Department received a second-hand report
of a concern regarding a possible threat to Springfield High School. We are grateful
for our partnership with SPD as they quickly and diligently worked to determine the
source and assess the credibility. At this time, there is no identified, or credible
threat to any Springfield school. However, in light of the recent incident in Florida,
out of an abundance of caution, the Springfield Police Department and the school
district agreed that an increase in police and district administrator presence
throughout the morning would aid in calming fears. Instruction and activities were
not disrupted and continued as scheduled throughout the day.

Springfield schools, along with our law enforcement partners will always take every
report seriously, and will work to determine the validity of all concerns to secure
the safety of students and staff. Together, we will continue to be vigilant in ensuring
a safe and secure learning environment for our school community is our upmost
priority.

Following tragedy, our students will look to the adults in their lives for support and
guidance on reacting to and processing tragedy. Below are some tips from the
National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and additional resources are
available at www.nasponline.org
• Reassure students that they are safe
• Return to normalcy and routine to the best extent possible while maintaining
flexibility
• Let children know that it’s okay to feel upset or angry
• Be a good listener
• Observe student’s emotional state
• Focus on resiliency as well as compassion of others.

Finally, our school, our police department, and our district are only as good as the
information that we have. Creating a safe learning environment is critical to helping
every student succeed. As adults, it is important that we remind students to report
any concerns to a trusted adult. If they do not feel comfortable doing so in person,
Springfield Schools participates in SafeOregon, a statewide school safety tip line that
provides parents, students and community members an avenue to report safety
threats or concerns. Reports can be made through SafeOregon.com, by text, call,
email or the mobile app. To report a tip call or text: 844.472.3367

We are grateful to staff in our schools, volunteers, mentors, parents and families,
along with members of our community who work tirelessly to support our students.
During times such as these we are reminded how critical community is to our
shared goal of a bright future for our students.

Please work with us to keep students calm and safe. If you have any outstanding
concerns or questions please feel free to contact the school at 541.744.4700. Thank
you for your cooperation and assistance in helping your student understand these
unsettling issues.

Kindly,

José da Silva
Principal
Springfield High School.
