The Beloved Community

One Minnesota pastor often called the congregation he served “the

beloved community.” This is a good description for all followers of
Christ. We should strive to make the church a community where love
flows easily and joyfully between members.

Church father Tertullian (A.D. 160-220) reported that the Romans said
of the first Christians, “See how they love one another!” Any faithful, dedicated group of believers
can and should be a beloved community.

Matthew 28:18-20
September and October, 2010

Blessings to our Sunday School friends!

While our first Sunday of our new Sunday School year was September 5, 2010, I do not feel that it is
really the new Sunday School year until the day of our annual picnic on Sunday, September 12 at our
playground at 5:30. I look forward to seeing you! Please bring an extra chair for the guest that you
have invited!

#1: During the months of September and October, we will organize our small groups by having
volunteers in each small group say “Yes, I will contact a small number of folks when they are away
from our small group and I will show love in Jesus’ name to them.”
Typically, in Preschool and Children’s areas, the teachers are the primary people who say “yes” to
contact the parents, preschoolers, and children. In Youth and Adult small groups, anyone can be
responsible for a group of 3-5 people from the class roll.

#2: During the months of September and October, we have a continuous goal of average attendance
of 300+ persons of all ages studying the Bible including our classes at The Oaks and Valley View.
Please pray that this goal would be met for God’s glory.

#3: During the month of September, we need a friendly face or two in the Welcome Center Parlor to
welcome guests and to show them an age appropriate place to study the Bible. Perhaps a Sunday
School class would be willing to have this ministry. Please contact me if this interests you.

#4: During the month of October, please plan a small group get-together off campus to enjoy each
other’s company and/or to minister to people connected to your small group.

#5: My vision of what a Sunday School newsletter should be—news shared by Sunday School people
and centered around events/celebrations showing God’s greatness and the work of the Holy Spirit
through studying the Bible. Would you share your news with me—anonymous or signed each month
and I will compile our small group stories into a newsletter?

Thanks be to God, I was saved as a young boy in a Sunday School class. I am grateful that God
continues to give me the opportunity to be a part of a Sunday School ministry centered around the
Bible and our only Savior, Jesus.

Blessings, Tom E. Yarber, Sunday School Director

ALMA HUNT OFFERING 2010

The theme for 2010 is “OPENING DOORS,” based off of John

10:9-10: “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved,
and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come
except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they
may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (NKJV)
The Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions makes possible
special ministries, outreach projects, and initiatives that are not
funded through regular streams of giving but are uniquely
connected to Virginia Baptists.
