CERTIFICATIONS

A TA trainee interested in TA certification in psychotherapy – CTA – have to go through the following steps of
certification:

1. First step: ARAT certification – “Atestatul ARAT” - this is to certify the TA training hours you already
attended (see details below).

2. Second step: College of Psychologists’ Accreditation – this gives you the right to legally practice
psychotherapy in Romania. In order to be accredited by the College of Psychologists you must have the
ARAT certification.

3. Third step: EATA Certification – CTA – this is a certification of your competencies as a TA psychotherapist
– gained through an written and oral examination. In order to be examined by the EATA examination
committee you have to legally practice psychotherapy in Romania, so you have to be accredited by the
College of Psychologists.

STEP ONE

ARAT certification –– “Atestatul ARAT” – this is a paper that certifies the total amount of TA training (workshops
& supervision hours), personal therapy / personal development hours, client contact hours and professional
additional hours (conferences in field, summer schools, other workshops attended in the field, peer-group hours,
presentations etc.) You can use this paper exclusively to prove that you attended a certain amount of professional
training/preparation/work and not to prove some professional competencies!

The criteria for gaining this certification are similar to those required by the College of Psychologists – Clinical
Psychology and Psychotherapy Committee for the level of accreditation named “practice with supervision” -
“Psiholog practicant sub supervizare”. This is the first level of specialization in the field.

Criteria: (www.arat.ro)

- 1800 hours – university studies on humanistic studies (see details on www.copsi.ro)

- TA 101 - Official workshop introduction in TA

- 500-800 hours of training in TA – theory and practice - (minimum of 250 hours of foundation training + 250
hours from other TA training / workshops, hours of client contact, regular attending of peer-groups, peer-
supervision etc.;

- at least 2 supervision hours before claiming the ARAT’s certification;

- minimum of 150 hours of personal psychotherapy / personal development;

- Supervision contract (not necessarily an EATA training contract) with a PTSTA / TSTA who is expressing
his/her willingness to regularly supervise the trainee.

In order to have this certificate from ARAT you have to apply to the Professional Committee of ARAT a file with
your documents (see also on www.arat.ro)

1. Degree Certificate in Psychology or other social/humanistic studies (according to the law no. 213/2004) and
“Foaia matricola”. Any other certificates of studies in the field: Master Degree, post-graduated – any certificate
that can prove you are fulfilling the hours required at pct. 1 in criteria presented above (1800 hours).

2. Certificates of attendance to the TA workshops including the TA 101– photocopies (or a list of them – please
check this with the Professional committee members).

3. Declaration regarding the - number of hours of client contact in psychotherapy field and number of hours of
attendance peer-groups, learning groups, peer-supervision groups;

4. Declaration that the trainee have attended at least two supervision sessions before claiming the ARTAT
certification and the written and signed contract with a PTSTA/TSTA willing to regularly supervise the trainee.

Note: Those trainees that signed and registered to EATA a training contract with a sponsor – this contract is
enough.

5. Declaration regarding the number of personal therapy / psychotherapy hours (in individual or group session).
Trainee can count the hours of personal work done in workshop indirect interaction with the trainer or under the
direct supervision of the trainer.

STEP TWO

College of Psychologists’ Accreditation

Now you have gained the ARAT certification.

The first step is to “practice under supervision” - all your activity is supervised during minimum 1 year on a
contractual basis with a supervisor. Your contract with the supervisor must be registered at the College of
Psychologists.

Add to your file the paper you received from ARAT - “Atestatul ARAT. ”Also, find information about other specific
documents the Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy Committee might ask for.

Now you are practicing psychotherapy - under supervision- legally in Romania.

If you want to take the two part external CTA exam for certification as a Transactional Analyst then you must
fulfill the following requirements:

Section 7, Overview of CTA examination”

• A TA 101 Certificate, either by attending a course or by taking an exam

• A current EATA or ITAA training contract endorsed by EATA or ITAA a minimum of one year prior to the oral
examination.

• Fulfilled the relevant national requirements for certification in the field of specialization; – this means to legally
practice according to the laws applicable in your country of practice = Romania;

• Been recommended as ready by their Principal Supervisor;

• Fulfilled the minimum requirement of 2,000 hours made up as follows:

- 750 hours of client contact, of which 500 must be in TA

- 600 hours of professional training, of which 300 must be in TA,

- 150 hours of supervision, of which 75 must be by a PTSTA or TSTA who is a member of EATA, ITAA or
WPATA, 40 of which must be with the Principal Supervisor

- 500 additional professional development hours (to be designated by the Principal Supervisor in
accordance with national requirements)

The number of hours of training and practical experience in the candidate’s field of specialization are laid down
and standardized (please find details on www.eatanews.org , “EATA Training and Examinations Handbook Section
7, Overview of CTA examination” ).

Section 8 of the EATA handbook provides a clear description of the first part of the CTA exam – “the written exam”

Section 9 of the EATA handbook provides a clear description of the second part of the CTA exam – “the oral exam
