Titration Lab ES 5

Titration Lab – Raw data worksheet

Required components which must be copied from this document to your formal lab report include:
1. Material List
2. Procedure
3. Data tables in the observation section

Sections which must be answered in your formal lab report include:

1. Analysis calculations
2. Analysis questions

See the formal lab report guidelines and the grading rubric for more details

Purpose: To experimentally determine the molar concentration of an unknown quantity of HCl(aq) given
a known molar concentration of NaOH(aq)

Materials
 50 mL Burette containing a solution of NaOH of  Ring stand
unknown concentration  Burette clamp
 Three Erlenmeyer flasks containing a solution of  Waste bucket
HCl of with a molar concentration of 0.05 𝑚𝑜𝑙
𝐿
,  White sheet of paper
0.1 𝑚𝑜𝑙
𝐿
or 0.2 𝑚𝑜𝑙
𝐿
 Pipette containing phenolphthalein

Procedure
1. Record the molar concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCl) given to use in your titration
2. Record the initial amount of HCl (10.0 mL) in your Erlenmeyer flask in the appropriate place in
the provided table.
3. Place five (5) drops of phenolphthalein into each of your three Erlenmeyer flasks of HCl.
4. Looking at your burette, record the start volume of your sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
5. Add NaOH in small quantities to the Erlenmeyer flask, mixing the flask well after every addition.
6. When wisps of pink colour begin to appear, slow down the addition of NaOH to one drop at a
time. Do not forget to mix after every addition.
7. When a light pink colour persists, stop adding NaOH. Record the final volume.
8. Repeat steps 4 to 7 for trial two and three, making sure that the final volume of the preceding
trial is the initial volume of the following trial.
9. Empty contents of the Erlenmeyer flask into the waste containers.
10. Clean lab station.

Observations
Molar Concentration of HCl: ____________________________________

Table title: ___________________________________________________________________________

Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)

Volume (mL) Start Volume (mL) End Volume (mL) Volume Used (mL)
Trial 1 10.0 𝑚𝐿

Trial 2 10.0 𝑚𝐿

Trail 3 10.0 𝑚𝐿

Average 10.0 𝑚𝐿

Analysis: Titration calculations to determine the molar concentration of sodium hydroxide.

Analysis Questions
1. If the molar concentration of hydrochloric acid was greater than the one used in this lab, what would
the effect on the titration experiment be? (3 marks)

2. If the molar concentration of hydrochloric acid was less than the one used in this lab, what would the
effect on the titration experiment be? (3 marks)

3. Suppose you were neutralizing 20 mL of 0.1 mol/L concentration of NaOH with a 0.1 mol/L
concentration of H2SO4. What would the effect on the titration experiment be? (Use calculations to
support your response) (6 marks)

4. What other indicators could you have used for this experiment in lieu of phenolphthalein. Explain
why. (3 marks)

5. Why do you run three trials of the titration experiment? (1 mark)
