Part A - Work Effectively

1.Where will you source the information you need to answer such a broad range of
questions?
I would ask people who have been working in this field for long time. Who've got lots of
knowledge about fitness industry also who has good communication skills.

2.Prepare responses to the following questions:


(Hint: you may need to ask a fitness facility or other fitness professional for help)
a).Name the peak bodies and professional organisations in the fitness industry
(include local, state and national)?
Fitness First,Anytime Fitness,Cross fit box.
b).List the types of employment opportunities that exist in this industry.
1.Cruise ship/resort Personal Trainer/Fitness Instructor/Massage Therapist
2.Personal Trainer specialising in kids or special needs
3.Personal Trainer and Exercise Therapist
c).Research 3 different fitness jobs. What qualifications are required for these roles?
1.Swim instructor- Austswim Certificate, CPR, Working with children check.
2.Lifeguard - Pool Lifeguard Certificate, First Aid Certificate, CPR, Working with
children check.
3.Aquatic and recreation manager - Drivers License, Relevant Tertiary Qualification,
Pool Lifeguard Certificate, Pool Operators Certificate, Bronze Medallion, Level
2/Senior/Apply First Aid, Working with children check.
d).What are the roles and responsibilities of a fitness instructor?
1.Fitness Instructors provide a comprehensive, one-on-one personal fitness assessment
and training program. The purpose of the program is to assist clients in setting and
achieving realistic fitness goals based on each client's needs. Ultimately, the client should
be able to individually develop and follow goals based on the personal trainer's
knowledge.
2.Fitness Instructors are expected to work independently and adhere to the guidelines of
their certifying organization, as well as all company policies and procedures.
3.Fitness Instructors are responsible for the assessment, teaching, training and
supervision of a general population in fitness centers, health clubs, gyms and community
recreation organizations.
4.Fitness Instructors may specialize in a number of areas such as personal training,
aerobics, aqua-fitness, and special population groups including senior fitness.
5.Fitness Instructors may also be employed as independents on commission and work at a
various locations.

3.Why is it important to share this knowledge with colleagues?


It gives knowledge to your collegues.It shows how big fitness industry is,maybe it gives
awareness of the options in fitness industry.

4.When you work for a fitness facility, you must conduct your daily work activities
in accordance with the policies and procedures that are prescribed by the
organisation.Create a list of the policies and procedures that you are likely to
encounter in a fitness facility.

2.Eligibility and membership fees
3.Member and staff safety

Part B - Follow OHS/WHS

1.Describe the responsibilities of a fitness professional in terms of OHS/WHS:


a) The fitness professional must eliminate, if possible, any risks to their clients
within the gym environment, this may evolve from cleanliness, equipment damage,
hazards and faulty equipment. If they cannot eliminate them, they must take action to
reduce them or make their client aware of them.
The fitness professional must report the risk, if dealt with or not, to the manager or the
health and safety officer. The risk must be documented with any action to reduce the risk
identified.
b) In the outdoor environment, the fitness professional must ensure risks are
identified, eliminated or reduce and made aware to the clients. These are different from
the indoors and include, poor/change in lighting, change or uneven surface, other
members of public and weather. The fitness professional can produce a risk assessment
for themselves, but does not have to report this to anyone as the space is usually not
covered by any.
If risk is high and cannot be eliminated or avoided then the area should not be used.
Supervision may be need depend on client numbers.

2)Describe why a fitness instructor would be expected to contribute to the


management of OHS/WHS in a fitness facility.

a)Everyone within a company has a duty of care to ensure their environment is safe to
work within.
b)Fitness instructors work on the gym floor which is a crucial area to elimate hazards and
risks of injury.
c)Document any risks and actions to remove risk.
Part C - Risk Management

1.Identify 5 potential sources of risk in a fitness facility


a. Weight plates, dumb bells left on the floor
b. Incorrectly operating equipment
c. Slippery floor in classes.
d. Globes or fluorescent tubes not working
e. Broken electrical sockets and switches
2.Undertake a risk management assessment of the following:
a)A personal trainer decides to take his bootcamp into the surf after they have
completed a grueling session.
It can be dangerious,trainer has to be more careful,clients may be fatiqeud and got
problems with paddling in the water, also can cause cramps in cold water.
b)The 'stop' button on a treadmill is no longer working
Person who is using it may fall off.You should call a staff to help you out.
c)A fitness instructor can't get the air conditioning working for their body
pump class.
It can big problems for people with special pop .It can lead to dehydrate or overheat.Heat
could lead to over sweting that can cause lots of problems,may get slippery on the floor.
d)A person doing bench press has failed to put away his weights,
If person does max reps in bench press or goes heavy ,he always needs spot to avoid
serious injuries.
