SEISMIC SEA WAVES
Tsunami (harbor wave)
Seismic sea waves (NOT tidal waves)

Caused by processes that abruptly move large

volumes of ocean water:

earthquake submarine volcanic eruption

coastal/submarine landslide or rockfall

extraterrestrial impact
MEANING OF TSUNAMI

The term tsunami, meaning "harbor wave" in literal

translation, comes from the Japanese, composed of
the two kanji (tsu) meaning "harbor" and (nami),
meaning "wave". (For the plural, one can either follow
ordinary English practice and add an s, or use an
invariable plural as in the Japanese.[9])
TSUNAMI

A tsunami is a series of waves in the ocean that

can cause great destruction. Tsunami also
means "Harbor Wave" in Japanese and is
commonly referred to as a tidal wave. Tsunamis
are often caused by earthquakes as was
demonstrated by the earthquake and
subsequent tsunami in Japan in March 2011.
ENERGY IN TSUNAMI

Loss of energy in a wave is inversely

proportional to λ
Since λ very long, little energy lost
Waves can travel great distances and still
be very distructive
DAMAGE DUE TO TSUNAMI

Waves often full of debris (trees, cars,

pieces of wood etc.)
As the wave recedes, the debris drags
more stuff with it
Can recede as much as a km out to see,
leaving shoreline empty with flopping
fish, boats, etc. on the bottom
WHAT IS TSUNAMI

A tsunami is a series of fast moving waves in

the ocean caused by
powerful earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
A tsunami has a very longwavelength. It can
be hundreds of kilometers long. Usually, a
tsunami starts suddenly. The waves travel at
a great speed across an ocean with
little energy loss.
DEADLIEST TSUNAMI

The deadliest tsunami recorded was on 26 December

2004. It was caused by an earthquake. The
earthquake was said to have a magnitude of 9.3 on
the Moment magnitude scale. It was centered in
the ocean near the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Over
215,000 people, mainly on the shores of the Indian
Ocean, died from this disaster. The giant wave moved
very quickly. Hundreds of thousands of people
in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Somalia, and
other nations, were killed or injured by it
TSUNAMI WARNING CENTERS

Once tsunami hto monitor tide gauges and ocean

buoys
its somewhere, tsunami watch established
