DEFINING WIND LOAD

There are two options to Assign the Wind.

1.Shell Object Method

2.Diaphragm Method

SHELL OBJECT METHOD

In shell object method we will Design the Wind on particular surface using Shell.

In this method first we have to create wall at zero mark and define the

Wind load pattern and then Assign the Wind Load.

Step 1. Create Wall surface with None:

Click on Set Elevation view icon Select ‘A’ side view (Left side view)

ApplyOk.
Select one storey option on right side bottom. Click Quick Draw Floor/Wall

(Plan,Elev, 3D)  Select Property =None.

Select Elevation from Storey 1 to Top storey (Storey 5) by windowing.

Set Elevation view  Select C view (Right side view) Apply Ok.

Select Elevation from Storey 1 to Top storey (Storey 5) by windowing.

Set Elevation view  Select 1 view (Front view) Apply Ok.

Select Elevation from Storey 1 to Top storey (Storey 5) by windowing.

Set Elevation view  Select 4 view (Rear view) Apply Ok.

Select Elevation from Storey 1 to Top storey (Storey 5) by windowing

2. Define Wind Load Pattern :

Define  Load Pattern.

Set Load= Wind X+ Type=Wind Self weight multiplier =0 Auto Lateral load=
Indian IS 875- 1987  Add New Load Ok.

Set Load= Wind Y- Type=Wind Self weight multiplier =0

Auto Lateral load= Indian IS 875- 1987  Add New Load Ok.
Select Wind X+  Click on Modify Lateral load to specify Wind Load parameter.

In the Wind Load Pattern IS 875-1987 select Exposure from Shell Objects. Fill the
required parameters as per IS 875-1987 Wind speed, Terrain category,Structure
class, k1, k3 factors and exposure height and click Ok.
Similarly select Wind Y-  Click on Modify Lateral load to specify Wind Load
parameter.

In the Wind Load Pattern IS 875-1987 select Exposure from Shell Objects. Fill the
required parameters as per IS 875-1987 as in Wind X+ and click Ok  Ok.
3. Assign Wind Load :

We have to draw the Shell objects all around the structure (X+. X-, Y+, Y-)
directions.

Set Elevation A view for X+ ve  Apply Ok.

Choose Similar storey option.

Select the wall panels in elevation from storey 1 to storey 5

Assign menu  Shell load  Wind pressure Coefficient.
In this select WIND X+ Wind pressure Coefficient Cp=0.8

Windward  Apply  Ok.

Set Elevation C view for X- ve  Apply Ok.

Select all wall panels in elevation from storey 1 to storey 5

Assign menu  Shell load  Wind pressure Coefficient.

In this select WIND X+ Wind pressure Coefficient Cp =0.50

Leeward  Apply  Ok.

Set Elevation 1 view for Y- ve  Apply Ok

Select all wall panels in elevation from storey 1 to storey 5

Assign menu  Shell load  Wind pressure Coefficient.

In this select WIND Y- Wind pressure Coefficient Cp=0.8

Windward  Apply  Ok.

Set Elevation 4 view for Y- ve  Apply Ok.

Select all wall panels in elevation from storey 1 to storey 5

Assign menu  Shell load  Wind pressure Coefficient.

In this select WIND Y- Wind pressure Coefficient Cp=0.5

Leeward  Apply  Ok.

2. DIAP (HRAGM METHOD:

In this method we will Assign the Wind on floor.

We have to apply the Diaphragm for all floors (from storey 1). After that we will get
the centre of gravity point of slabs
Wind Loads :

In ETABS there are two ways to define lateral loads (Wind, earth quake). Built in
option will automatically calculate lateral loads as per available design codes.

Define wind load parameters as per IS 875 --Part 3 (1987)

From Main menu  Define  Static Load cases 

Load = X or Y

Type = Wind

Self weight multiplier =0

Auto Lateral load =IS 875—1987   Add New Load  Select wind X load
and click on modify lateral loads to specify required wind load parameter. As
per IS 875  Ok  Ok.

Creating dummy areas with property =None

Set required elevation view in right window  From Main menu  Draw 
Draw area objects  Draw rectangular areas  Property = None  Click on
the perimeter of area and press enter.

Foot Note: Apply wind load for selections.

To select wind area

Main menu  Select  By area object type  select none  Ok.

Assigning wind loads

Select drawing area of required elevation  From Main menu 

Assign  Shell/area loads  Wind Pressure coefficients 

Wind load case name =Wind X

Coefficient Cp= - (Change if required)  Ok.

To see wind load selection

 Set Building view option 

 Area section

 Line section  Ok.
