Lesson Title: Understanding Foreshadowing


Date and Class: October 23rd 2017
Outcomes Addressed:
Essential Question: What is foreshadowing?
How do writers use foreshadowing to grab the audience’s attention?
What are some examples of foreshadowing in novels and movies?

Materials Required:
 PowerPoint
 Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV7CBMM9tng
 Worksheet (Alma & The Outsiders)
 Outsiders novel

Teaching and Learning Activities: (Time allotments noted)


Activate: (10 minutes) Once students are ready to start introduce the literary device of foreshadowing,
provide students with a definition, and have them write it in their ELA notebooks. Ask students to give
examples in books or movies that they have read
Acquire: (30 minutes) Using Youtube, play the Alma video. After the video has finished have the
students fill in a viewing reflection sheet. Give them 10 minutes to come up with what they can before
watching the film again. Discuss answers
Apply: (20) Using their table groups have students work together on examples of foreshadowing in The
Outsiders. Each group must fill out the entire sheet, however, each table is only responsible for
presenting one quote to the class

 Visual / spatial – students will follow the lesson on pp and watch the Pixar film
 Musical – sound track in the background of Alma

 Intrapersonal – students will work on the viewing reflection on their own
 Verbal & Linguistic: Students will be given the opportunity to answer questions orally

For: Class discussion surrounding the film “Alma”, and other examples of foreshadowing in movies/
novels
As: Students will fill out a viewing reflection sheet based on what they understand from the video as
well as a question and answer worksheet from the novel The Outsiders. Both the group work

conversation and class discussion will help to know if they have developed an understand about the
meaning of foreshadowing
Of: At the end of class students can hand in their two work sheets for evaluation

 Foreshadowing can act as a warning when certain events occur within our lives
