Greek Medicine

Realized by Septimiu-Dorian Gheletiuc

Ancient Greek Medicine refers to that part of the history of medicine
in the period from the beginning of the VIII century BC by mid-century AD II
in Greece or ancient Greek colonies.
Medicine was formed under the incontestable influence of ancient
Greek medical science, Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Indian, it content is
constantly enriched by several generations of Greek genius, founders of
philosophical schools or medical millennium I BC.
Asclepius, god of medicine, was the son of Apollo and mortal
Coronis. His mother had been killed by Apollo for infidelity. Zeus snatched
the baby from the mother's womb and gave Centaur Chiron to grow him.
Asclepius learned from this medicine and he becomes an experienced in
raise the dead. Zeus never bore this violation of the natural order and his
lightning hit. The Epidaurus has built the largest shrine of Asclepius, and
after being deified, he took his father, Apollo, which carries the title "the
healer". As owner of medicine, Asclepius has experienced considerable
fame since the fifth century (BC). Many pilgrims came to Epidaurus for
finding healing. Asclepius indicates through dreams the right treatment.
Under this god they have created real schools of medicine, especially in the
island of Cos. In art, Asclepius is portrayed in terms of a bearded man,
thoughtful and gracious, usually accompany with a snake (signifying
prudence of care). In his temples, he founded a hieratic medicine (Hiross in
Greek means holy) with many followers who were spread in Sicily and
southern Italy, and even in Dacia.
The first references to medicine appear in the Iliad, where are present
two doctors, "the sons of Asclepius" Mahaon _ Podaleirios. When
Menelaus is injured by an arrow, Mahaon take care of him: "The unveiling
injure where it had struck a painful weapon. Sucking blood, then after
teaching, pour soothing balms received from his father Chiron. "The
principles of various Greek authors deeply influenced medicine. The Tales
of Miletus (624-546 BC) considered as primary element so-called "Arche"
(water), which is found both in nature and in the living organism: human,
animal or plant; Her failure leading to drought, dryness, aging, lack of organ
function etc. It is different physical states can be sources of fever, rigors,
moisture, sweat, precipitation substances clots, evaporation, air
transformation, thrombosis, etc.
After Tales, water is the most important principle in nature and is
based earth, air and fire, by the appearance of lightning, by inflammation of
hydrogen by oxidizing the role of oxygen in combustion processes,
breathing, nutrition etc.

Doctor Alcmeon from Crotona who lived in the end of 6th century BC
and early 5th century BC, from studies on animals through many
dissections, argued that the basis of life are grain, gonadal etc.
It was the first on medical opening to cells, to genetics, to embryology, cell
biology and tumor to. It was very important the discovery of Alcmeon the
existence of close links between the brain and the sense organs is really a
discovery medical nature.
Anaximander also went on the Thales line (610-546 BC), he claming
in the famous school of Miletus that everyone was founded in Apeiron (in
the aquatic environment), as a pre-cursor incontestable of Darwin.
By Miletiana school stated Heraclitus of Ephesus (540 -470 BC),which was
the true founder of the dialectic, who argued and demonstrated by logical
arguments and not mystical universal order that everything is subject called
"Lagos" and the basis for creation of the world was fire which donating the
work of land, water and air. The fire stay at the base of eternal burns from
great laboratory called nutritional, hematological, immunologic, bactericidal,
antiviral laboratory.
At Crotona formed Democedes which was the personal physician
Polycrates of Samos and then Darius the king of Persians, and had been
public doctor of Aegina and Athens. Democedes wasn’t only public known
doctor. A bronze tablet from Idalion (Cyprus) dating back centuries V,
reproduces an agreement made between the city and the doctor Onasilos
by which is committed to pay a fee for care injuries war.
In Athens, public doctors flaunted titles to the Assembly, which
chooses those who seemed best. They were paid by the city-state, which
provides a local consultation. Surgeries and medication were paid by the
state. Costs for these social services were covered by a special
tax:iatrikon.
Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, founded the science of medicine
because it was the first to begin to propose remedies depending on the
disease. It seems obvious and trivial, but until then, all mankind diseases
was the same sentence as expressions of the gods and all the diseases
were treated the same: with prayers or sacrifices. Hippocrates realized that
each disease has its own causes and then was the first to try to identify the
first disease (provide a diagnosis), and then to seek a cure for that
particular disease. For them, Hippocrates is called the "father of medicine".
Hippocrates and his students haven't designed a simple illness as
foreign entities. They saw the sick man in his entirety, considering the
disease as a general phenomenon caused by "dyscrasias" mixtures of the
four bad humors.(black bile, yellow bile and mucus in the airways,

digestive, urinary mucopolysaccharides synovial mucopolizaha-Rideau in
the blood, joints, genitals, folders muscles, nose, throat, ears, meninges,
peritoneum, amniotic fluid, pleura, pericardium, etc.) .
Moving from Hippocrates to Greek generally medicine emphasize
that granted carefully feeding patients, their profession, their garments,
temperature working environment, water consumption and diets contact
with parasites macroscopic trauma, fractures and their dislocation, weather
anomalies.
The last great Greek physician of antiquity was Galen (Galen - 130-
200 AD) who, although born in Greece, lived from the age of 30 years in
Rome, where he was concerned about medicine, mathematics, philosophy
and law. He founded the human anatomy.
I could see, so through this short journey in time and space, the way
medieval doctors treating the sick, try new healing techniques, or bringing
their own contributions to existing ones. We tend to say that the practices
used by the Greeks are old and unreliable, which is actually true, but here
it's about perspective, because for them were new, modern, high
technology right.
