PREFACE
Curriculum of a subject is said to be the throbbing pulse of a nation. By
looking at the curriculum of a subject, one can judge the state of intellectual
development and the state of progress of a nation. The world has turned into a
global village, new ideas and information are pouring in a constant stream. It is,
therefore, imperative to update our curricula by introducing the recent
developments in the relevant fields of knowledge.

Ex-Director
Institute of Geology,
University of the Punjab,

The meeting started with the recitation from the Holy Quran by Prof. Dr.
Muhammad Majid.
The members lauded the efforts of the UGC and the initial Committee
for developing exhaustive curricula in Geology at B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels that
provide a minimum standard for the institutions in Pakistan engaged in the
teaching of geology. However, the convener deliberated upon the need to
update the recommended text books and modify some courses to which all the
members agreed. He mentioned that the course contents should be aimed at

TEACHING STRATEGIES AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The Members who have participated in these meetings came from all
parts of Pakistan and represented both academicians and professionals from
different organizations. They agree with the following suggestions and
recommendations.
During these meetings the B.Sc. course was revised thoroughly and for
M.Sc. a very large number of courses have been suggested. However,, despite
the large number, only two are compulsory courses. From the remaining courses
the student will choose four courses of which two shall be directly related to his
field of specialization. At the same time the selection of courses offered would
depend on the availability of teachers and facilities.
It is recommended that:
77
4. Every geology department should be provided with sufficient computer
and internet facilities to the students.
5. Laboratory facilities and staff strength should be improved.
6. More interaction between R & D organizations, academic institutions
and industry is required regarding joint research projects, visits to sites,
laboratories etc., which may be sponsored by these organizations.
Seminars/training courses may also be jointly held.
7. Professionals from different organizations may be invited to deliver
lectures on specific topics related to Earth Sciences. Small discussion
groups consisting of professionals and academicians in the specialized
fields may be set up whenever required to promote research activities.
8. Library facilities need to be strengthened in terms of books, research
journals, and internet.
9. Training and research courses in various areas of geology be
organized by the UGC at different Universities.
10. Teachers should frequently be sent on short training courses within the
country as well as abroad.
11. It is suggested that Lab. Manual with an organized Laboratory practical
schedule be introduced for all the courses. Experts in various areas of
geology should be encouraged to prepare such manuals. To encourage
publication of these manuals, UGC and universities should provide
incentives to the authors.
12. Making a pool of active researchers/professors (including retired) for
supervising M.Phil. and Ph.D. students.
13. Geologists should get funding for attending conferences in Pakistan
and abroad, and the process of NOC should be simplified.
