TITLE: SOLUBILITY PRODUCT CONSTANT KSP

AIM: To determine the solubility product of a slightly soluble salt

APPARATUS:

10 ml graduated cylinder, 0.010M lead nitrate, dry conical flask, deionized water and 0.020 M
potassium iodide.

METHOD:

A 10 ml graduated cylinder was used to measure 2.5 ml of 0.010M lead nitrate and this was
added to a clean dry conical flask. 45.0 ml of deionized water was added to the flask and
swirled. Finally, 2.5 ml of 0.020 M potassium iodide was added and the flask was swirled.

The flask was left to stand for 5 to 7 minutes and the solution was then checked for a cloudy
appearance. The observations were recorded and deemed trial 1. Four more trials were
completed, increasing the concentration of lead and iodide ions each time.

OBSERVATIONS:

TABLE SHOWING OBSERVATIONS MADE WHEN EACH TRIAL WAS CARRIED OUT WITH VARYING
CONCENTRATIONS OF Pb2+ and I- IONS

Pb2+ WATER I- OBSERVATIONS

TRIAL 1 2.5 mL (2.5 × 10-5 mol) 45 mL 2.5 mL (0.5 × 10-4 The substance in the
mol) conical flask remained
colourless and
transparent.
TRIAL 2 5 mL (5 × 10-5 mol) 40 mL 5 mL (1 × 10-4 mol) The substance in the test
tube became faintly
cloudy.
TRIAL 3 7 mL (7 × 10-5 mol) 36 mL 7 mL (1.4 × 10-4 mol) The substance in the
conical flask became
cloudy and opaque.
TRIAL 4 10 mL (10 × 10-5 mol) 30 ml 10 mL (2 × 10-4 mol) The substance in the
conical flask developed a
faint yellow colour.
TRIAL 5 13 mL (13 × 10-5 mol) 24 mL 13 mL (2.6× 10-4 mol) The substance in the
conical flask developed a
deep yellow colour.

CALCULATIONS:

1.
Pb2+

10 cm3 has 10 × 10-5 moles

1000 cm3 has x

X= 0.01 mol/dm3

I1-

10 cm3 has 2× 10-4 moles

1000 cm3 has x

X= 0.02 mol/dm3

2. Pb2+ + 2 I- PbI2

3. KSP= [Pb2+] [ I-]2

4. KSP= [Pb2+] [ I-]2

= (0.01) ( 0.02)2

= 4 × 10-6 mol3dm-9

CONCLUSION: The KSP value of lead iodide was found to be 4 × 10-6 mol3dm-9
