Questionnaire and analysis:

To help further understand the genre I have created a questionnaire based around both music
videos and the rock genre. The answers I have asked people are the following when asking the
questions I made sure to allow the person to give various opinions and was not biased in any way.
The questions vary from what do you like about music videos to opinions on certain genres mainly
rock. When conducting the survey I made sure to send the survey to a variety of people from
different ages and both genders. I will analyse the answers that I am given and use them to help me
create and think about my own music video.

Question and Answer Evaluation

1) What is your gender? This tells me that of the people that
answered the questionnaire 77.8%
were males where 22.2% were
females. This also tells me that more
males answered the questions than
females. This tells me that most of
the answers for this questionnaire
came from males with a smaller
portion of them coming from
females.

2) What is your age? This answer also tells me that the

people of the people answered the
questionnaire all of them were in the
age bracket of 14-17 meaning that
the opinions of these questions are
based on the answers from people
within this age bracket.

3) Do you listen to rock music?
From this question I can also see that
all of the people from this
questionnaire have at least listened
to one rock song in the past so they
know what the genre is. This also
helps to understand the popularity of
rock within this age group of people.
It shows me that everyone within this
bracket have listened to rock music.

4) How many times a day do you listen to rock music
5) How much do you like rock music?
This question shows me how often
people listen to rock songs. The
majority of people say they listen to
rock music very often with the other
percentage saying that they
sometimes or occasionally listen to
rock music. This once again shows
the popularity of the genre of rock as
a lot of people say that they enjoy
listening to it very often.

6) What is your favourite genre of music?

8) Is costume and make up important to you?
mixed as this question asked how
much people like rock music on a
scale of one to five. A large amount
of people rated rock music a 4 which
is very high followed by a few who
rated it a 5. However a lot of people
also rated the genre 1 and 2 meaning
that some people don’t like the genre
compared to others. This could also
suggest that rock is not the most
popular genre with some people.
In this question I asked what your
favourite genre of music is. The large
amount of people stated that their
favourite genre was rock with this
being the most popular choice. This
shows that with the people that I
asked rock is still the top choice for
genre of music. This also shows me
that it is more popular than any other
genre of music. Other choices were
indie/alternative, Pop and rap. This
shows that these are also popular
genre of music besides rock.
I then asked if the people if they In
some way enjoyed the rock genre.
The answer is a very clear yes as all of
the people who were asked stated
that the at least enjoy something
from the genre. This once gains
shows the popularity of the genre
due t everyone answering the
questionnaire at least liking rock. The
people who previously answered
gave rock a lower rating so they
either answered wrong t at least in
some way enjoy the rock genre. For
this I can only assume.
This question asked if costume and
makeup was important with the
majority of people answering that it
does. This shows that the people
prefer to have costume and make up
within music videos. However some
people also stated that it either does
not matter or they are not bothered.
Although this must be taken into
consideration the majority prefer
that costume and make up are used
in music videos. This means that in
my own music video I should use

This question asked a similar
question and the responses were also
very similar to before. The question
asked is location was important in
music videos with 77% agreeing that
it Is important. Again a split 11% for
no and doesn’t matter was seen.
Again this shows that the majority of
people would prefer a good location
in a music video. This also tells me
that I should also choose a good
location when filming my music
video. When filming my own music
video I should also think about
location as the majority of people
said that they think locations are an
important part of music videos.
The next question asked if the person
would like CGI in music videos the
majority of people for the question
answered maybe/Doesn’t matter.
This means that the larger amount of
people at 44.4% would not be
bothered if CGI was or was not
involved in a music video. This
suggests to me that I could use/not
use CGI in my own music video as the
larger amount of people doesn’t care.
The second most picked option was
yes at 33.3% meaning again that
more people than not want CGI
compared to those who do not. This
tells me that in my own video people
are not bothered if CGI is included or
not so when it comes to making my
own video I could include it or not.
I then asked the people if they would
like creative filters in music videos
this could range from simple black
and white to anything complex. The
answers were evenly split 44.4% to
44.4%. The answer for these were yes
and depends on the genre of music.
This suggests that a large amount of
people prefer creative filters with a
similar amount liking it if it works

15) What makes a rock song feel like a rock song to
you?
with the genre of music or type of
music video. This helps me with my
own music video as I intend on using
a creative black and white filter in my
own music video.
This question got a lot of responses
with varied answers. One of the more
popular choices were a performance
based music video (33.3%) and
mixture based music video (33.3%).
The rest of the people answered
narrative (22.2%) and a concept
based music video (11%). This
suggests that people prefer the music
videos be mixture based or
performance based. Some others also
enjoy concept and narrative.
This was another important question
for my music video. I asked if people
like rock music video to be dark,
colourful or if it depends on the
genre. The larger amount of people
(66.7%) stated that it depends on the
actual genre of rock category. While
the other answers stated that it
should be dark (33.3%). This is also
good as it shows that people prefer
rock songs to be darker as nobody
answered with the choice of being
colourful.
From this I can see that the majority
of people don’t care if the lead role
of a song is male or female with
66.7% saying that they are not
bothered if the lead role is male or
female. This suggests that the main
role of my music video could either
be male or female. The larger amount
of people also suggests that they
would prefer a male role with 22.2%
saying that they would like a male
role.
I then asked an optional question to
about what makes a rock song a rock
song these were the results. Many
people stated that one of the main

things that make a rock video feel like

a rock video is the chosen location
and costumes. This is true as certain
codes and conventions are used to
create rock music video two of these
being location and costume. Other
people said that things like the band
members being present and quick
transitions also help to make a rock
music video. I will take into
consideration when making my music
video as this will help to expand the
music video for peoples different
preferences

From the survey I was able to find a variety of different things one of these things was the choice of
music video type. Finding this information is helpful in making sure that I can make my music video
fit to different people preferences. A large amount of people said various answers however one of
the most popular was a mixture. Doing a mixture would help to allow different preferences to be
noticed. I also found out that people are not particularly bothered about special effects or filters in
music videos. This subjects that people will be happy with or without them so long as they look
good. This will help me when designing my own music video. Another important piece of
information was the lead singer, a lot of people stated that they are not bothered about the gender.
Small portions have a preferred gender however this is not as much as people who are not bothered.
This survey and its answers are going to help me when creating my music video as these answers are
providing me with useful insight.
