Skilled Workforce Development Scholarship
General Scholarship Information
• Charleston Home Builders Association(CHBA) is committed to the future of the Lowcountry through
strengthening the local housing industry’s workforce with skilled construction tradesmen & women.
• CHBA has set up a scholarship to support students interested in continuing their education in the
Construction Trade field.
• The scholarship is based on a Small Home Project in a Three-Part Scholarship Series: Phase 1, Phase II,
and Phase III.
• During Phase II, a $6,000 Best Small Home Concept scholarship will be awarded by CHBA to a Wando
High School 10th-12th grade student, to be used for continuing education within the housing industry. If
the student is in 10th-11th grade, the money will be held until the end of their senior year.
• An official scholarship presentation will take place in May(TBD) at the Wando Engineering Showcase.
• During Phase III, students will participate in a Small Home Construction Summer Camp where students
will build the small home over a period of two weeks from Phase II’s Small Home Concept winner’s design.
• The scholarship winner will receive the full scholarship amount if they attend the Small Home Construction
Summer Camp portion and will receive 50% of the full scholarship amount if they do not attend the Small
Home Construction Summer Camp.

Phase I-Exterior Small Home Design


Due October 6, 2017
Phase 1 includes:
• Students will interview the client and create a program for the Small Home.
• Students will research and design the exterior of the Small Home in teams of two. See specific project
requirements provided by the teacher.
• Students will complete a cost estimate of the Small Home exterior design. See specific project requirements
provided by the teacher.
• Students will build a framing model of their Small Home design in teams of two. The teacher will provide
the materials.
• Phase 1 Critique-Charleston Home Builders Association panel to choose three of their favorite Small
Home designs and the favorites will be used to proceed to Phase II.
Phase II- Full Conceptual Small Home Design
Due December 8, 2017
Phase II includes:
• Students will discover the site location.
• Students will use the exterior basic design chosen from Phase 1 and develop individual and unique site
designs, exterior elevations, interior elevations, electrical and plumbing plans (sketches), design hypothetical
foundations at site location, use applicable residential building code requirements, and review residential
energy codes requirements.
• Students will then create a Presentation Board which will include: Site Plan, Floor Plan, 4 Exterior Elevations,
Kitchen and Bathroom Interior Elevations, Minimum of 2 Exterior Renderings and 1 Interior Rendering, 2
Building Sections and a Wall Section.
• Phase II Critique-Charleston Home Builders Association panel will choose their favorite Small Home
design with the winner receiving the scholarship.
• CHBA Scholarship Amount-$6,000

Apply for Phase III-Small Home Construction Summer


Camp by May 1, 2018 (open to anyone)
Application requirements if Completed Phase 1 and II includes:
• Submit the Basic Camper/Parent Information Sheet.
• Submit a Parental Consent Form and Hold Harmless.
• Submit all Phase 1 and II documentation on a digital portfolio.

Application requirements if a student did not complete Phase 1 and II includes:


• Submit the Basic Camper/Parent Information.
• Submit a Parental Consent Form and Hold Harmless.
• Sumbit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or principal.
• Submit answers to 3 brief essays questions (typically 150 words or less). Questions provided by teacher.

The Small Home designers in Phase 1 and 2 have top priority placement in the Small Home Construction
Summer Camp. If they do not take a placement then others will be granted placement. A maximum of 15
students per camp will be accepted.

Applications will be accepted up through May 1st, at that point, all applications will be reviewed by a selection
committee composed of Charleston Home Builders Association personnel. Once all applications are reviewed
by the selection committee and a selection is made, e-mails regarding your application status will be sent.
E-mails for acceptance into Phase III-Small Home Construction Summer Camp will be sent no later than May
31, 2018.

Phase III-Small Home Construction Summer Camp


Session 1 June 11-15 or Session II June 18-22, 2018
• Students will physically build the Small Home design.
• Each Session has 15 maximum participants.
• All work will be coordinated and supervised by Charleston Home Builders Association professionals and
Wando employees.
• Snacks and Lunch will be provided to camp attendees.
