 PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) was founded in
the year 1951 in Hawaii as a non profit organization by
Lorrin Thurston.
 To stimulate interest in the Pacific Region as a vacation land
and to develop promote and facilitate travel to and among
the many pacific destination.
 Its main objective is to develop promote and facilitate travel
to and within.

The founder Lorrin Thurston had an idea to organize all travel form in a
consistent cohesive and systematic manner. So as to ensure maximum
benefits from existing opportunities and creation of the fresh
opportunities through multimedia publicity.

The philosophy of PATA is that entire travel agency must work together
to develop an ever increasing flow of pleasure travel from which each
member will derive a fair share of the total business.

The activities of PATA include assisting small and upcoming destination
to develop their infrastructure providing expertise, planning group
travel schemes, destinations, hotel operations and discounts

make better business decisions

To take a lead position on travel industry issues that need to be addressed
PATA’s Mission

 The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is a membership


association acting as a catalyst for the responsible
development of the Asia Pacific travel and tourism industry.
 In partnership with PATA’s private and public sector
members, we enhance the sustainable growth, value and
quality of travel and tourism to, from and within the region.
 PATA ‘s mission is to enhance the growth, value and quality of
Pacific Asia travel and tourism for the benefit of
its membership.
There are two types of chapters namely
(i) Area chapters
(ii) Promotional chapters
i. As a means of keeping PATA members and their
representatives in the Pacific better informed on happenings
throughout the Pacific travel industry and on association
activities. Some of these chapter activities include
programmes involving matters of facilitation , staff training,
improving visitors plants and services and promotion aimed
at the developing regional tourist traffic and other
marketing activities.
ii. Promotional Chapters
Activities of these Chapters are all designed to increase the sale of travel
to the Pacific Asia and include meetings of the PATA membership/travel
trade with programmes on various pacific destination , providing up to
date information for new developments, facilities , services, tours,
educational seminars for travel trade sales personnel and cooperation with
PATA in the overall marketing programme , promotions and other PATA
activities.

The chapters are however not the branch offices of PATA. They are rather
like local civic clubs working for the benefit of their respective
communities.

A chapter is composed of the highest level of executives
representing the local tourism industry who volunteer their
services and their expertise to develop a constantly
expanding overall business.
Functions of PATA
The PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) performs a variety of
functions. These includes:

Pacific Asia Travel Conference And Workshops:

During the first four months PATA sponsors and organizes a
conference on its members with the objectives of reviewing
the progress, exchanging ideas and planning for future
programmes.
 The conference also serves as a unique promotional tool for
the host govt providing it an opportunity to show to the travel
industry from abroad what it has to offer in terms of tourist
attractions and tourism plant to the foreign visitors.
Marketing

A long range marketing programme coordinates all the


promotional functions of PATA for a maximum impact in
the consumer marker and also among sales agents.
The marketing program includes
(a) advertising, publicity and promotion and
(b) Research and development.

The association prepares and distributes a wide selection of sales
aids and sales promotion materials to travel agents and tour
operators throughout the world.

The association organizes researches seminars research
presentation and technical assistance programmes for it members .

It was at the specific request of the government that the constitution of
the PATA was amended suitably to enable India and other South Asian
countries to become associate government members.

India was the first country to enter PATA from among the countries
which bordered on the pacific but were not in the Pacific region.


India realized that PATA was one of the most active travel promotional
organized and that the country’s association with it would not only benefit
her from getting a share of the world’s increasing tourists flow.

The main objective in inviting PATA conference to Delhi was to expose
the facilities to a large segment of a foreign tour operators, travel writers,
airlines executives etc.
Honors and Awards
PATA is pleased to recognize each year the outstanding dedication, commitment and
achievements of individuals and organizations.
 PATA Gold Awards
Recognizing exceptional achievements in a variety of endeavors, bringing deserved
acclaim to the best that Asia Pacific travel industry has to offer. The PATA Gold Awards
presentation takes place at PATA Travel Mart each year.
 Life Membership
The Association’s highest individual honor, conferred upon an individual who has
devoted at least 15 years of exceptional voluntary service to PATA and to the tourism
industry
 Award of Merit
Recognizing an individual who has provided outstanding service and leadership to
PATA.
 Outstanding Chapters
Acknowledging the efforts of two outstanding Chapters for the spirit and
excellence with which they have conducted their activities and aligned themselves
to PATA’s strategic agenda.
 Face of the Future
An award that recognizes an exceptional young leader in the travel and tourism
industry.
 Gallery of Legends
Legends from travel and tourism have been inducted into the PATA Gallery of Legends
since 1993. The Gallery is situated at Honolulu International Airport. Plaques
document and remember the outstanding contributions of each inductee to Asia Pacific
travel and tourism.
 Tomorrow's Tourism
A competition that challenges undergraduate students from PATA member schools to
come up with new ways of measuring tourism, taking into account its wider impact on
the environment and community at large.
 Chairman's Awards
The Awards, in the personal gift of the serving PATA Chairman, recognize an individual
(or individuals) for their help, support, loyalty and dedication during the Chairman’s
tenure

Organization Structure of the PATA

PATA and India-

India was admitted as an associate government member of Pacific
Asia Travel Association in 1957.

It was only in the year 1964 at Jakarta, Indonesia that India became
an active member of the association.

PATA was formed to promote traffic to Pacific countries only.

Among these countries were Srilanka, Nepal and later Pakistan and
Bangladesh.
