In this month’s edition of the Personal Update news journal we

are taking time to remember the challenges, choices, and courage
of the Misslers as they launched the ministry of Koinonia House.
Their venture of faith reveals a pathway of personal commitment in the
face of substantial risk. They provide a good example for anyone wishing
to see their life’s work yield the everlasting fruit of service to God.
The Koinonia House Mission Statement is “To create, develop,
and distribute materials to stimulate, encourage, and facilitate serious
study of the Bible as the inerrant Word of God.” Therefore, we wish to
celebrate 25 years of the Misslers fulfilling this mission.
Through the teaching of the Misslers and the materials published
by Koinonia House, thousands of people worldwide have been taught,
blessed, challenged, stretched, confounded, and encouraged. Over the
years many have corresponded with our staff and told stories of how
much these life-changing materials have meant to them in their time of

IN THE BEGINNING...
President/Founder, Koinonia Institute
I
t was a Friday afternoon, and my wife Nancy dialled Kim Lindsey, her
prayer partner, with an urgent request: “Please pray for Chuck—
he’s having a particularly difficult day.” Nan had dialled Kim, but
was surprised by Hal Lindsey himself answering the phone.
His immediate response was, “Kim and I will drop everything and
come over immediately to encourage Chuck.”
“Have you lost your mind?!” Nan quipped. “It’s Friday afternoon,
and you’re in Palos Verdes and would have to cross the entire
Los Angeles metropolitan area and then drive up the mountains to
Big Bear Lake— a gruelling trip of over five hours in Friday afternoon
rush hour!”
They insisted and made the trip, arriving in the early evening to
treat us to an upscale dinner at the Rusty Squirrel, the fanciest venue
available in Big Bear in those days. (We learned later that they had
also abandoned theatre tickets for their evening plans.)
After an elegant dinner, we retired to our rather elaborate
“hot tub” channelled among the rocks on our property, and didn’t
finish until after 3 AM as Hal challenged me about my future plans.
“If you could do what you love the most, what would you most
like to spend your time doing?”
He knew the answer to that predictable question: he knew
that among my several hobbies (ham radio, astronomy, and other
technical interests), my favourite personal activity was expositional
Bible studies. I had taught the Monday night Bible studies at

in the Fellowship Hall, which was regularly attended by about 500
faithful devotees. The tapes of these studies were distributed free of
charge by several ministries, including the “Firefighters for Christ”
and it was estimated that five or six million were in circulation.
Hal was playing the role of an executive recruiter, suggesting that
I reverse my priorities, making my role as a Bible teacher pre-empt
my role as a professional director by which I made my living.
With my de facto following, he felt I could survive as an independent

Hal indicated that he had to be in Canada on Sunday and

needed a stand-in for his church in Torrance, California. It could
be a convenient opportunity to “give it a try.”
We did. And the rest is history.
Inventing the “Briefing Pack”
We wanted to avoid dealing with individual tapes; they did not
constitute a viable economic unit, especially as they were so widely
available for free. (And we were not about to interfere with something
that God was clearly blessing!)
However, it was feasible to package two tapes, along with 10-20
pages of notes, as a topical “Briefing Pack” that would be both cost

effective and affordable. Provocative artwork would entice someone

to review the back cover which then raised the questions the package
dealt with. It became quickly evident that we could easily organize
a publication list on our kitchen table during the week and carry a
substantial inventory with us on the weekends.
(It is interesting to notice our increasing artwork sophistication
that subsequently emerged as we learned how to use Corel Draw and
other software aids as we matured in exploiting the available media.)
The Expositional Commentaries
The ultimate challenge was to design an attractive packaging
concept to encourage collecting the expositional commentaries—
book by book—of the entire Bible; eight tapes per package with
matching notebooks for the notes. (Labels on the spine permitted
volume production of the basic units.)
These “collectors’ items” became the prize holdings of our
expositional commentaries throughout the English speaking world.
Most of the early artwork was created by Chuck himself.
Today, Chuck still has an active input with ideas he shares with the art department.

Technology Revolution
Ultimately, technology displaced the traditional tape recordings
with CDs, DVDs, MP3, MP4a, and other advances in electronic
media. Even “eBooks” have now also emerged as a coveted alternative.
Perusing the list of K-House publications will manifest the
variety, and the depth, of the resources that we have endeavoured to
make increasingly available.
Our “flagship” publication is the audacious Learn the Bible in
24 Hours. This has been featured on major TV networks and Internet
sites. It has become widely accepted as a unique approach to gaining
navigatable grasp of the entirety of the Bible. (The DVD version
is vastly better than the book version as it takes advantage of 1400
computer-aided diagrams, etc.)
With the advent of the Internet Revolution, now all of man’s
knowledge lies only a few clicks away! Man is, indeed,
“without excuse.”

Inheritance & Rewards

Are all believers going to be equal in heaven? Wasn't
it all decided at the cross? Is there a difference between overcoming
sin and bearing fruit?
Inheritance came to the firstborn son by virtue of his birth. Whether
he actually secured it depended upon his obedience and the father's
choice. Inheritance was subject to condition and obedience. The
Abrahamic Inheritance was based on Divine Oath, conditioned on
obedience.
Inheritances could be forfeited. The Exodus Generation was promised an inheritance,
but failed to obtain it at Kadesh -Barnea. Israel was God's "firstborn son", yet only 2 of over
2 million took possession of their inheritance. Even Moses was excluded due to his disobedience.
Esau, sold his inheritance for a bowl of pottage.
We have been promised an inheritance in the Kingdom to come. But is there more required
of us than just our acceptance? Does behavior in this life really influence our future?
