T
he community of Christian faith worldwide knows her as the finest woman
who ever lived. Born in obscurity to a distant descendant of Israel’s
magnificent King David, Christians believe that Mary, the mother
of Jesus of Nazareth, was honored by the Creator of the Universe to
be the person through whom God himself would visit his own Creation,
reconciling his people to himself.
No matter what you may have thought you knew before about this
first century paragon of virtue and faith, there’s a good possibility that
you’ve been misinformed about her. In fact, chances are you’ve been

The story of Mary will encourage readers who, like her, may be walking
a rough road. Perhaps you have lost a spouse or a child?
Are you grieved because you have been rejected by those who should
care about you? Does it sometimes seem like the whole world is lined
up against you?
Then take comfort in the story of Mary.
The Christmas story is precious to the hearts of millions, but how
many know the real truth about the Star of Bethlehem? What really
happened in Jerusalem that drove Herod to an insane rage to hunt down
and kill the Christ child?
And what was it about the quiet demeanor of young Mary that
God chose her to be part of the most dramatic rescue mission in human
history?
Our new book asks ten questions that probe the life and attitudes
of Mary. They’re questions that all believers should ask of their own
spiritual walk.
How will you do as you apply these ten questions to your own life?
Be prepared! Because honestly delving into Ten Test Questions for the
World’s Finest Woman will give you a vigorous spiritual tune up.

that bear their names. Jesus appeared to James after His resurrection.9
If our surmise is correct - and it is only a surmise - the others probably
also became believers.10
And Mary did have a sister as alluded to in v.13.11 We know so little
of her subsequent history from the Scriptures; there are only minimal
allusions in the Book of Acts.12 She apparently remained in the care of
John in his retirement in Ephesus.
Obviously, most of what is commonly published by the Roman
Catholic Church has been contrived to promote a number of doctrinal
heresies.13 Most Biblical believers, from their revulsion to the tragic and
heretical deification of Mary, tend to disregard her altogether and ignore
her situation and predicament.
(We cannot miss the ostensibly
dismissive allusion at her prompting
during the wedding at Cana.14)
“The Truth”
The “Elect Lady” is loved “by all
they that have known the Truth”(v.1).
Who else would be loved by all other
believers? To whom else could this refer?
This, too, seems to point to far more than
simply a prominent personage within their
local church!
Clearly, the prominence of “truth,”
in concert with “love,” is the keynote of
this letter. John uses the word “Truth”
five times in the first four verses. He uses
the word “love” four times. However,
in this letter, we learn that Truth “dwells

in us and shall be with us forever” (v. 2). “The Truth” may be intended
as a more personal title.
Even Pilate’s cynical question still echoes in our ears, “What is
Truth?” For believers, Jesus’ declaration is conclusive and comprehensive:
“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”15
It would seem that John is using, here, Truth as a title of Jesus Christ,
just as he so often uses the Logos, the Word.16 (The recipient of John’s
letter also was not a latecomer: she was there “from the beginning.”17)
If our suspicion is correct, it would place a unique complexion on the
entire letter, and it would also yield a number of other significant insights.
We should not presume that any of us is beyond the need for
encouragement or exhortation. Why would Mary - a blessed but human
believer - be any exception? Especially during a time when widespread
attacks on the deity of Jesus Christ was the topic of the day! Mary was
subject to the same frailties as we are: pride, doubts, and a need of
frequent encouragement, counsel, and, perhaps, exhortation. A tendency
toward pride could certainly have been her most serious challenge:
the most blessed of all women who had ever walked the earth! And yet,
having to live with the clouds of legitimacy, and other doctrinal issues,
over her firstborn.18
Read through the Second Epistle of John from Mary’s perspective,
and see what the Spirit confirms to you.
Dating the Letter
On Paul’s return from his third missionary journey, he met with
the Ephesian elders at Miletus (some 30 miles south of Ephesus) and
delivered to them that touching farewell address in which he warned
them of the forthcoming false teachers.19 It was this subsequent rise of
these false doctrines which is the focus of all three of John’s later epistles.

The issue in all three letters is that love and truth must be practiced,
or “walked.” “To walk in the truth” means to obey it. It is easier to
study the truth, or even argue about the truth, than it is to obey it.
Knowing the truth is more than giving assent to a series of doctrines;
it means that the believer’s life is controlled by a love for the truth
and a desire to magnify the truth.
For a practical contemporary guide on this same subject, authored by
my own personal “Elect Lady,” Walking in Love and Truth and Intimate
Knowledge of God, by Nancy Missler, is a summary of her famous trilogy,
The Way of Agape, Be Ye Transformed, and Faith in the Night Seasons.

Of John’s five New Testament books, these three include a sermon and two
personal letters, one of which may have been written to Mary, the mother of
our Lord. His Gospel deals with our past: Salvation. Revelation deals with our
future. John’s First Epistle deals with our present: Sanctification. It has been
called the New Testament sanctum sanctorum. John’s bandwidth extends
from the practical, the “Christian’s Bar of Soap,” to the hyperspace of our
resurrection body! John’s second epistle appears to have been a personal
letter to Mary, having been given into his responsibility at the Cross. If so, it
has a number of profound implications. John’s third, very brief, note deals
with three people, all Christians: Gaius, the encourager; Diotrephes, a gossip;
and Demetrius, an example to be imitated.

EXCERPT
I
n our culture, faith is frowned on as mere imagination – the hopes and
wishes of the common man. Evidence is what matters, we are told
– and not just any form of evidence. We’re told we can only “know”
things after they have been demonstrated time and again through
stringent scientific method, and even then future experiments might
change up what we thought was true.
The Bible offers a different position. True faith is substance. It is
evidence. The word “substance” in Hebrews 11 is ὑπόστασις - hypostasis
- and it means “confidence” or “assurance.” It has the connotation
of a foundation or substructure, something stable and unmoving on
which things can be built. It is substance that gives real existence.
The word hypostasis was used in ancient title deeds as a guarantee of
ownership. It refers to the real essence, the real content. Faith is the
essence of a future reality, despite the appearances of the physical
world around us. There is more to this physical world than meets the
eye, and in this little book we’re going to explore what I like to call
the “boundaries of reality.”
Despite the failure of the scientific method to explore it,
we understand that there is more to reality than the physical world.
We sense it, but it’s ultimate reality can be quite elusive.

blindness.1 We know that after the Resurrection, Jesus was able to walk
through walls.2 These give us hints about the greater dimensionality of
the universe. Yet, even the four dimensions of our physical space-time
domain are mysterious. In Hebrews 11:1, we are told that faith is the
evidence of things not seen. Two verses later, the writer says something
else interesting:
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the
word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things
which do appear.
Hebrews 11:3
The things we can see are made from things that aren’t visible.
Even from a completely secular view, this is clearly true. Just within this
past century, scientists have been able to explore the exceedingly small
building blocks of our physical world, moving down past the cell to the
universe of subatomic particles. We can’t see them, but we know they’re
real. They are framed by the ῥῆμα - rhēma - the spoken word of God.
Our known universe was spoken into existence. The phrase “God
said” occurs ten times in Genesis Chapter 1, and that’s one of the reasons
the ancient rabbis believed that we live in ten dimensions. They are joined
today by certain theoretical physicists, who suggest that the world has
10 dimensions along with supergravity, giving us 11 total dimensions.
We’ll get into this in more depth when we talk about hyperspaces.
The Boundaries of Reality
Our universe is finite. Astrophysicists tell us that space is expanding,
that it’s stretching, but it still has edges. In 2011, Saul Perlmutter, Brian
P. Schmidt, and Adam G. Riess won the Nobel Prize in Physics for
their observations of supernovae that demonstrated that the universe
is not just expanding, but doing so at an accelerated rate.3 According
to their interpretations of light wave data, not only is the expansion of
the universe not slowing down, it’s picking up speed! And yet, there is
an end to it all. Space does not stretch infinitely into every direction.

PRIVATE WORSHIP
H
i Everyone, Oswald Chambers states, “A private relationship of worshipping
God is the greatest essential element of spiritual fitness.”
Last week I had the privilege of talking and praying over the
phone with a dear lady, by the name of Carolyn, who came upon
our website. An assignment was given by her pastor to find out what it
means to worship the Lord. After praying and searching her own heart,
she went to the Internet to find out what other Christians had to say
on the subject. She ended up on our website where she was able to read
the introduction and first chapter of Private Worship-The Key to Joy.
She then downloaded the entire book… Below are a portion of her
words that she emailed me:
I opened the PDF file and now I have to share with you. Out of all the
searching I’ve been doing over the last week on “how do I worship God”
I happened to end up on your web-site. After reading the first few chapters
in the book—it was as if I was reading my own “right now” life story, even
the part about having no joy! I am in awe and cannot believe that with
just the little that I’ve read tonight, the questions I’ve had about my private
relationship with the Lord are being answered…
Over the years, I’ve read many testimonies, like Carolyn’s, regarding
our featured book. As Christians, understanding the purpose of why
worship is so important should radically transform our relationship
with the Lord. Because worship simply means–a divine encounter with
God. Worship is the key to experiencing His presence, to knowing the
indescribable joy of our salvation, and to reflecting
His glory.
The other definition of worship that
I personally love means to catch fire.
When something catches on fire, it is literally
consumed by it. This is exactly what happens in
worship. We become consumed in our love for the
Lord and one in spirit with Him.
28 | VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 5
By learning “how to” worship Him in the Spirit—not just on
Sundays in church, but privately at home—every day, we will be able
to experience the fulfillment and the joy that the world and everyone
in it is so desperately searching for, but very few seem to have found.
Remember—in His presence if fullness of joy and we don’t have to
wait until we get to heaven in order to taste of it…

JUDGING A BOOK

S
ometimes discoveries are made in areas where you least expect them.
Such was the case in early April 2016 as we pre-released the cover
art for Dr. William Welty’s new book Mary, Ten Test Questions for
the World’s Finest Woman.
For the cover we wanted to portray an image of this woman
in an uncharacteristic way. Our Koinonia House Art Director,
Dean Packwood, created an amazing depiction of Mary, the mother of
Jesus. As no one actually knows what Mary looked like, Dean used the
facial structure from the Shroud of Turin (which is assumed by some to
be an image of Christ) and produced a forensic reconstruction of how
she may have appeared. He recorded the development of his creation
from a blank canvas to the final product. We then shared that video on
our Facebook page and uploaded it to YouTube.1 Personally I thought
he did an amazing job and felt that people would enjoy watching a true
work of art being created by a world-class artist.

hold fast what is good.”3 In fact, Paul warns Timothy that the end-
times will be characterized by deception.4 I have personally published
many studies that focus on this topic as I feel that it is a crucial skill
that needs to be developed during the final age of the Church.5
Again, Paul warns Timothy of “perilous times”6 where he lists slander as
an attribute of those who should be avoided. Yet today it would seem
that popular ill-informed insults are sought after rather than researched
insights. Sadly, far too many people seem to follow the quick snipes of
the self-proclaimed “protectors of the faith” where slander is disguised
as discernment.
Discernment or Slander?
The Bible has a lot to say about slander. The dictionary definition
of slander is, “to make a false statement that causes people to have a
bad opinion of someone.” The Bible tells us, “Whoever secretly slanders
his neighbor, him I will destroy; the one who has a haughty look and a
proud heart, him I will not endure.”7 The apostle Paul seemed to have
his own ill-informed critics who sought to injure him without just cause.
In writing to the Romans he said, “And why not say, “Let us do evil that
good may come”?—as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm
that we say. Their condemnation is just.”8 In the end, King Solomon
concludes the matter by simply saying, “Whoever hides hatred has lying
lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.”9

Slander is the rotting
fruit of gossip. Gossip grows

unbridled tongue. He warns that, “This wisdom does not descend from
above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking
exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.”10 Moses warned the
Nation of Israel, “You shall not go about as a talebearer among your
people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor:
I am the Lord.”11
Solomon tells us why some are drawn to gossip and slander.
“The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, and they go down into
the inmost body. Fervent lips with a wicked heart are like earthenware
covered with silver dross.”12
Be a Berean
The mission moto for Koinonia House is Acts 17:11, which reveals
two important qualities of the believers in Berea. “These were more
fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word
with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether
these things were so.” They (1) “received the word with all readiness”
and they (2) “searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these
things were so.”
May you grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ as you
study the Bible with a receptive and discerning heart.
