You’ll read in our new book a comprehensive analysis of what Mary

from Gabriel’s visit and continuing through her teen years until the day

The circumstances of her life as told to us in the narrative of the

answer to the following test challenges:
• Test #1: Are you willing to trust God with your whole life?
• Test #2: Are you willing to give God your expectations about
your life?
• Test #3: Are you willing to walk with God into heartbreak?
• Test #4: Will you give God your illusion of personal security?

Given the overall testimony of her life, it comes as no surprise that

the early Church held her in such high esteem. While the Protestant

MAYBE IT’S TIME YOU LEARNED THE TRUTH…

The community of Christian faith worldwide knows her as the finest woman who ever lived.
Born in obscurity to a distant descendant of Israel’s magnificent King David, Mary, the mother of Jesus
of Nazareth, was honored by the Creator of the Universe to be the person through whom God himself
would visit his own Creation.
No matter what you may have thought you knew, there’s a good possibility that you’ve been
misinformed about her. In fact, chances are you’ve been wrong from the start about the most
remarkable woman who ever walked the dusty roads of first century Israel at the height of the Roman
Empire’s power.
No, Mary isn’t who you think she is. More than twenty centuries have come and gone since a teenaged
virgin became the mother of God’s incarnate Son. As a result, far too much myth has grown up around
the person and story of the woman who became one of the foundational figures of human history.
But what the New Testament records tell us about the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus is fascinating
enough in its own right that accumulated legends seem to embellish the story.
So today, more than twenty centuries later, Biblical scholar and theologian Dr. William Welty pulls back
the dusty curtain of historically inaccurate tradition and introduces you to the very human, but utterly
magnificent character of Mary, the mother of the Messiah, as she struggles to pass Ten Test Questions
for the World’s Finest Woman.
In this analysis of every passage recorded in the New Testament in which she is mentioned, you’ll learn
why Mary, the mother of the Rabbi from Nazareth, rose from literal obscurity to become one of
the most pivotal figures in all of human history. VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 5 |

Promise to the reader! Why? What makes this book so special?
Revelation is a “lens” that puts the entire Bible into focus. The lens is focused
on the person of Jesus Christ, and his destiny is imminent. This is a book of
victory: We are overcomers! We are the ultimate winners in the game of life!
(I read the ending: we win!)
One of the reasons this book strikes us as strange is because of our lack
of understanding concerning the Old Testament. The Book of Revelation
consists of 404 verses that contain over 800 allusions to the Old Testament.
These are detailed, along with Chuck’s analysis of the design and structure of
this fascinating book. Learn about the past, present and future of the Church
and our ultimate destiny. This is an ideal “first study” and foundational for
every Christian.

The view of kuria taken as a symbolic description of the Christian

Church has been the dominant view as early as Jerome.4 The view
of believers as “children of the church” may have been comfortable
for Jerome, et al., for ecclesiastical reasons, but it flies in the face of
Scriptural usage: we are “children of God,” not “children of the church.”
It is also significant that this word does not appear elsewhere with
this signification.
The further allusion to the recipient’s sister and her children (v.13)
would also seem fatal to this view but for the preponderance of the
expositional history which has attended this epistle.
(2) To a prominent individual within the church
A straightforward reading of the letter would seem to indicate that
the letter is addressed to some prominent member of the local church,
and this has also been a common alternative interpretation.5 The writer
knows her sister and her sister’s children (v.13). This view would make
this the only book in the Bible specifically addressed to a woman.
A Provocative Conjecture
Who would be the most “Elect Lady” in the entire Bible? To me, the
most likely prima facie suggestion (which, however, is not even discussed
among most commentators6) would be that the recipient of this intimate
letter is the most “elect” of all women, the very one that Jesus Himself
entrusted to John’s personal care: Mary, the mother of Jesus!7
In fact, it is surprising that Jesus didn’t consign her to one of her
other four sons. Jesus was raised among a family of at least seven:
five brothers and two sisters.8 James and Jude became believers after the
resurrection and, in fact, each wrote the books in the New Testament

4 Jerome (Ep. Xi. Ad Ageruchiam); later Calovius, Whiston, Michaelis, Augusti, Hofmann (Weissagung u.
Erfllung , II. P.321, and Schriftbew., I. P.226ff); Hilgenfeld (1855), Ewald, Candlish, Barnes, Huther, etc. Also,
more recently, R. W. Harris, H. I. Marshall, A. Plummer, Ray Stedman, Jerry Vines, J. Vernon McGee, Warren
Wiersbe, John Walvoord, and other contemporary commentators.
5 John uses a plural in vv. 6, 8, 10, 12; and a singular in vv. 1, 4, 5, 13. The fact that he embraces others as well in
passing doesn’t alter the intended addressee. The family of the “Elect Lady” is clearly in view.
6 So far, I haven't found any that support the idea of Mary except Knauer (Stud. U. Krit., 1833, Part 2, p.452ff;
q.v. J. E. Huther, Critical and Exegetical Handbook to the General Epistles of James, Peter, John, and Jude,
translated from the German, 11 vols., Funk and Wagnalls, 1884).

that bear their names. Jesus appeared to James after His resurrection.9
If our surmise is correct - and it is only a surmise - the others probably
also became believers.10
And Mary did have a sister as alluded to in v.13.11 We know so little
of her subsequent history from the Scriptures; there are only minimal
allusions in the Book of Acts.12 She apparently remained in the care of
John in his retirement in Ephesus.
Obviously, most of what is commonly published by the Roman
Catholic Church has been contrived to promote a number of doctrinal
heresies.13 Most Biblical believers, from their revulsion to the tragic and
heretical deification of Mary, tend to disregard her altogether and ignore
her situation and predicament.
(We cannot miss the ostensibly
dismissive allusion at her prompting
during the wedding at Cana.14)
“The Truth”
The “Elect Lady” is loved “by all
they that have known the Truth”(v.1).
Who else would be loved by all other
believers? To whom else could this refer?
This, too, seems to point to far more than
simply a prominent personage within their
local church!
Clearly, the prominence of “truth,”
in concert with “love,” is the keynote of
this letter. John uses the word “Truth”
five times in the first four verses. He uses
the word “love” four times. However,
in this letter, we learn that Truth “dwells

in us and shall be with us forever” (v. 2). “The Truth” may be intended
as a more personal title.
Even Pilate’s cynical question still echoes in our ears, “What is
Truth?” For believers, Jesus’ declaration is conclusive and comprehensive:
“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”15
It would seem that John is using, here, Truth as a title of Jesus Christ,
just as he so often uses the Logos, the Word.16 (The recipient of John’s
letter also was not a latecomer: she was there “from the beginning.”17)
If our suspicion is correct, it would place a unique complexion on the
entire letter, and it would also yield a number of other significant insights.
We should not presume that any of us is beyond the need for
encouragement or exhortation. Why would Mary - a blessed but human
believer - be any exception? Especially during a time when widespread
attacks on the deity of Jesus Christ was the topic of the day! Mary was
subject to the same frailties as we are: pride, doubts, and a need of
frequent encouragement, counsel, and, perhaps, exhortation. A tendency
toward pride could certainly have been her most serious challenge:
the most blessed of all women who had ever walked the earth! And yet,
having to live with the clouds of legitimacy, and other doctrinal issues,
over her firstborn.18
Read through the Second Epistle of John from Mary’s perspective,
and see what the Spirit confirms to you.
Dating the Letter
On Paul’s return from his third missionary journey, he met with
the Ephesian elders at Miletus (some 30 miles south of Ephesus) and
delivered to them that touching farewell address in which he warned
them of the forthcoming false teachers.19 It was this subsequent rise of
these false doctrines which is the focus of all three of John’s later epistles.

15 John 14:6.
16 John 1:1-3, 14, 1 John 5:7, Revelation 19:13.
17 Cf. vv. 5 & 6. The “we” suggests a provocative joint identity with John.

It would seem that II John was written to this very community,

but at an earlier date than I John (since the false teachers, the “Gnostics,”
evidently still had access to the church in II John, but had seceded from
it in I John).20 This conjecture concerning the identity of “the Elect
Lady” would also imply that II John was written earlier than A.D. 85,
since Mary would have been about a century old by then.
By the time that John is subsequently in exile on the isle of Patmos,
Ephesus was prominent as the first of the seven churches in Revelation
for which Jesus includes a report card. The church at Ephesus, by then,
had apparently exercised effective diligence regarding false doctrine,
but had “left their first love.”21
The apostle John, according to tradition, spent his final years in
Ephesus, where he died and was buried.
The Key Lesson
In any case, John’s letters focus on our walking in love, in truth,
and in the intimate knowledge of God. They deal with, in a sense,
a challenge similar to the indictment by the Prophet Hosea:
Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath
a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no
truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
Hosea 4:1

The issue in all three letters is that love and truth must be practiced,
or “walked.” “To walk in the truth” means to obey it. It is easier to
study the truth, or even argue about the truth, than it is to obey it.
Knowing the truth is more than giving assent to a series of doctrines;
it means that the believer’s life is controlled by a love for the truth
and a desire to magnify the truth.
For a practical contemporary guide on this same subject, authored by
my own personal “Elect Lady,” Walking in Love and Truth and Intimate
Knowledge of God, by Nancy Missler, is a summary of her famous trilogy,
The Way of Agape, Be Ye Transformed, and Faith in the Night Seasons.
20 1 John 2:19.

Of John’s five New Testament books, these three include a sermon and two
personal letters, one of which may have been written to Mary, the mother of
our Lord. His Gospel deals with our past: Salvation. Revelation deals with our
future. John’s First Epistle deals with our present: Sanctification. It has been
called the New Testament sanctum sanctorum. John’s bandwidth extends
from the practical, the “Christian’s Bar of Soap,” to the hyperspace of our
resurrection body! John’s second epistle appears to have been a personal
letter to Mary, having been given into his responsibility at the Cross. If so, it
has a number of profound implications. John’s third, very brief, note deals

The Boundaries of Reality

Ἕστιν δὲ πίστις ἐλπιζομένων ὑπόστασις πραγμάτων ἔλεγχος οὐ

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things
not seen.
Hebrews 11:1

I
n our culture, faith is frowned on as mere imagination – the hopes and
wishes of the common man. Evidence is what matters, we are told
– and not just any form of evidence. We’re told we can only “know”
things after they have been demonstrated time and again through
stringent scientific method, and even then future experiments might
change up what we thought was true.
The Bible offers a different position. True faith is substance. It is
evidence. The word “substance” in Hebrews 11 is ὑπόστασις - hypostasis
- and it means “confidence” or “assurance.” It has the connotation
of a foundation or substructure, something stable and unmoving on
which things can be built. It is substance that gives real existence.
The word hypostasis was used in ancient title deeds as a guarantee of
ownership. It refers to the real essence, the real content. Faith is the
essence of a future reality, despite the appearances of the physical
world around us. There is more to this physical world than meets the
eye, and in this little book we’re going to explore what I like to call
the “boundaries of reality.”
Despite the failure of the scientific method to explore it,
we understand that there is more to reality than the physical world.
We sense it, but it’s ultimate reality can be quite elusive.

As a scientific term, hypostasis is antithetical to lack of knowledge.

Hypostasis is the substance, the reality. It’s something proven. It’s the
evidence of things not seen. The word ἔλεγχος - elegchos - is a legal
term for evidence that is accepted for conviction. It’s what makes us
certain about something. In 2 Timothy 3:16 it is translated “reproof,”
but it is the information that leads to our being convinced, that gives
us conviction. The person of faith lives out his belief based on what his
mind and spirit are convinced is true.
Faith is not relegated
Faith is not relegated to religious to religious issues.
issues. The entire business world rests The entire business
on faith, because credit cards, checks,
world rests on faith...
401(k)s and securities require our reliance
on things that we cannot see or touch. We have faith that if we go
to the bank and ask for our money, the bank will hand us cash.
We have faith that we will be able to exchange that cash for goods and
services. These things have been proven to be effective for us, but frankly,
faith is the only foundation that they have. If we as a society decide that
the cash in our hands is worthless, the system crashes.
The writer of Hebrews tells us that our faith is not merely a hope
or a fiat system of currency. Our faith is not a dream or wish or fantasy.
It’s reality. Our faith is substance. It is evidence. Hope must have a
foundation, and that foundation is Scripture, and the work of the Holy
Spirit in our hearts gives us a confidence in the events still future and
unseen. The writer of Hebrews tells his readers that they must wait
patiently until the Word of God comes to pass, but even their faith
demonstrates the reality of the things that aren’t yet seen.
That’s what we’re going to start exploring here. The life of the believer
is lived in the assurance of another reality, a reality outside the realm
of our immediate experience. Although we cannot reach out and grab
the future God has promised us, the person of faith is convinced of
its substance.
The Bible gives us a great many hints about the unseen world
around us, a world beyond our physical eyes. We know that angels
and demons work behind the scenes, hidden from us by our spiritual

blindness.1 We know that after the Resurrection, Jesus was able to walk
through walls.2 These give us hints about the greater dimensionality of
the universe. Yet, even the four dimensions of our physical space-time
domain are mysterious. In Hebrews 11:1, we are told that faith is the
evidence of things not seen. Two verses later, the writer says something
else interesting:
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the
word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things
which do appear.
Hebrews 11:3

The things we can see are made from things that aren’t visible.
Even from a completely secular view, this is clearly true. Just within this
past century, scientists have been able to explore the exceedingly small
building blocks of our physical world, moving down past the cell to the
universe of subatomic particles. We can’t see them, but we know they’re
real. They are framed by the ῥῆμα - rhēma - the spoken word of God.
Our known universe was spoken into existence. The phrase “God
said” occurs ten times in Genesis Chapter 1, and that’s one of the reasons
the ancient rabbis believed that we live in ten dimensions. They are joined
today by certain theoretical physicists, who suggest that the world has
10 dimensions along with supergravity, giving us 11 total dimensions.
We’ll get into this in more depth when we talk about hyperspaces.
The Boundaries of Reality
Our universe is finite. Astrophysicists tell us that space is expanding,
that it’s stretching, but it still has edges. In 2011, Saul Perlmutter, Brian
P. Schmidt, and Adam G. Riess won the Nobel Prize in Physics for
their observations of supernovae that demonstrated that the universe
is not just expanding, but doing so at an accelerated rate.3 According
to their interpretations of light wave data, not only is the expansion of
the universe not slowing down, it’s picking up speed! And yet, there is
an end to it all. Space does not stretch infinitely into every direction.

I like to call the vast stretches of space the macrocosm. Space is a

world for us to explore and discover on the big side of things.
In this little book, we’re going to go the other way. We’re going to
explore the world of the small – what I like to call the microcosm –
and it too has boundaries.
The world of the small is made up of indivisible units called quanta,
hence the term quantum physics. We would think that we could continue
to divide something in half no matter how small it gets, but there is
a limit to smallness. Max Planck is famous for determining that the
smallest length possible is about 1.616199 x 10-35 m. This Planck length
is about 1020 times smaller than a proton. If we try to split something
that is the Planck length, it loses a property called “locality.”
No particle that we know about is actually found at the size of the
Planck length. The water molecule is a v-shaped combo of oxygen and
hydrogen that is about 2.75 x 10-10 m, an incredibly small item that is
far too tiny to see, but even a single water molecule is almost 6 x 1026
larger than the Planck length. That’s a 10 trillion x 10 trillion times
size difference.
Still, all matter is found in tiny packages. We’ve learned that
molecules are made of atoms, and the atoms are made of electrons,
protons and neutrons. In recent years, we’ve learned that protons and
neutrons are made of elementary particles called quarks. Electrons and
neutrinos fall in the category of elementary particles called leptons.
There’s another category of elementary particles called bosons, the most
familiar of which is the photon, the tiniest package of light.
As we’ve explored the domain of the exceedingly small,
we’ve discovered that limits exist there as well. Infinity cannot be found
in the macrocosm, and it can’t be found at the microcosm either.
That’s the real thing we’re going to be bumping up against. At the basis of
our physical reality we find indivisible units, and that means our reality
is digital. It is a digital simulation, a virtual reality, a shadow of a larger
reality that’s beyond our comprehension – the metacosm.
This excerpt is from Dr. Chuck Missler’s new book Beyond Perception.

Why do scientists now believe we live in a 10-dimensional universe?

Has physics finally reached the very boundaries of reality?

There seems to be evidence to suggest that our world and everything in

it are only ghostly images: projections from a level of reality so beyond
our own that the real reality is literally beyond both space and time.
The main architect of this astonishing idea is one of the world’s most
eminent thinkers–physicist David Bohm, a protege of Einstein’s. Earlier,
he noticed that, in plasmas, particles stopped behaving like individuals
and started behaving as if they were part of a larger and inter
connected whole. He continued his work in the behavior of oceans of
these particles, noting their behaving as if they know what each on the
untold trillions of individual particles were doing.

PRIVATE WORSHIP
H
i Everyone, Oswald Chambers states, “A private relationship of worshipping
God is the greatest essential element of spiritual fitness.”
Last week I had the privilege of talking and praying over the
phone with a dear lady, by the name of Carolyn, who came upon
our website. An assignment was given by her pastor to find out what it
means to worship the Lord. After praying and searching her own heart,
she went to the Internet to find out what other Christians had to say
on the subject. She ended up on our website where she was able to read
the introduction and first chapter of Private Worship-The Key to Joy.
She then downloaded the entire book… Below are a portion of her
words that she emailed me:
I opened the PDF file and now I have to share with you. Out of all the
searching I’ve been doing over the last week on “how do I worship God”
I happened to end up on your web-site. After reading the first few chapters
in the book—it was as if I was reading my own “right now” life story, even
the part about having no joy! I am in awe and cannot believe that with
just the little that I’ve read tonight, the questions I’ve had about my private
relationship with the Lord are being answered…
Over the years, I’ve read many testimonies, like Carolyn’s, regarding
our featured book. As Christians, understanding the purpose of why
worship is so important should radically transform our relationship
with the Lord. Because worship simply means–a divine encounter with
God. Worship is the key to experiencing His presence, to knowing the
indescribable joy of our salvation, and to reflecting
His glory.
The other definition of worship that
I personally love means to catch fire.
When something catches on fire, it is literally
consumed by it. This is exactly what happens in
worship. We become consumed in our love for the
Lord and one in spirit with Him.

28 | VOLUME 26 | ISSUE 5
By learning “how to” worship Him in the Spirit—not just on
Sundays in church, but privately at home—every day, we will be able
to experience the fulfillment and the joy that the world and everyone
in it is so desperately searching for, but very few seem to have found.
Remember—in His presence if fullness of joy and we don’t have to
wait until we get to heaven in order to taste of it…

ometimes discoveries are made in areas where you least expect them.
Such was the case in early April 2016 as we pre-released the cover
art for Dr. William Welty’s new book Mary, Ten Test Questions for
the World’s Finest Woman.
For the cover we wanted to portray an image of this woman
in an uncharacteristic way. Our Koinonia House Art Director,
Dean Packwood, created an amazing depiction of Mary, the mother of
Jesus. As no one actually knows what Mary looked like, Dean used the
facial structure from the Shroud of Turin (which is assumed by some to
be an image of Christ) and produced a forensic reconstruction of how
she may have appeared. He recorded the development of his creation
from a blank canvas to the final product. We then shared that video on
our Facebook page and uploaded it to YouTube.1 Personally I thought
he did an amazing job and felt that people would enjoy watching a true
work of art being created by a world-class artist.

hold fast what is good.”3 In fact, Paul warns Timothy that the end-
times will be characterized by deception.4 I have personally published
many studies that focus on this topic as I feel that it is a crucial skill
that needs to be developed during the final age of the Church.5
Again, Paul warns Timothy of “perilous times”6 where he lists slander as
an attribute of those who should be avoided. Yet today it would seem
that popular ill-informed insults are sought after rather than researched
insights. Sadly, far too many people seem to follow the quick snipes of
the self-proclaimed “protectors of the faith” where slander is disguised
as discernment.
Discernment or Slander?
The Bible has a lot to say about slander. The dictionary definition
of slander is, “to make a false statement that causes people to have a
bad opinion of someone.” The Bible tells us, “Whoever secretly slanders
his neighbor, him I will destroy; the one who has a haughty look and a
proud heart, him I will not endure.”7 The apostle Paul seemed to have
his own ill-informed critics who sought to injure him without just cause.
In writing to the Romans he said, “And why not say, “Let us do evil that
good may come”?—as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm
that we say. Their condemnation is just.”8 In the end, King Solomon
concludes the matter by simply saying, “Whoever hides hatred has lying
lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.”9

Slander is the rotting

unbridled tongue. He warns that, “This wisdom does not descend from
above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking
exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.”10 Moses warned the
Nation of Israel, “You shall not go about as a talebearer among your
people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor:
I am the Lord.”11
Solomon tells us why some are drawn to gossip and slander.
“The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, and they go down into
the inmost body. Fervent lips with a wicked heart are like earthenware
covered with silver dross.”12
Be a Berean
The mission moto for Koinonia House is Acts 17:11, which reveals
two important qualities of the believers in Berea. “These were more
fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word
with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether
these things were so.” They (1) “received the word with all readiness”
and they (2) “searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these
things were so.”

May you grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ as you
study the Bible with a receptive and discerning heart.
