“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences
of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities,
but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the
Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all…” (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)

W
ith all that is going on in the world today it is difficult for Christians
to know where they should be focused and how best to utilize
their time and talents.
The apostle Peter began his second general epistle by issuing
a challenge. “Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your calling
and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so
an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting
kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” 1

What is Peter telling us to do?

We know that we are CALLED:
1) to become a Believer in Jesus Christ,2
2) to become a Disciple of Jesus Christ,3
3) to become a Witness for Jesus Christ,4 and
4) to become a functioning member of the Body
of Jesus Christ.5
We know that the Body of Christ is structured to equip us for our
function. We understand from the apostle Paul’s teaching that Christ,
“gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors
and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the
edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and
of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the
stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed
to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of
men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in

Try these 12 guidelines for service:

1) Be Faithful toward God. Faithfulness sits at the core of any
meaningful work relationship. “For the eyes of the Lord run to
and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on
behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” 7 Paul instructed
Timothy, “And the things that thou hast heard of me among
many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who
shall be able to teach others also.” 8
2) Rely on the Protection of Divine Direction. Know that God
directs the steps of His children. Remember, “The steps of a
good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord
upholds him with His hand.” 9
3) Dedicate Your Heart to Pleasing God’s Heart. Ask God to
reveal His heart to your heart. “Search me, O God, and know
my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any
wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” Make
sure your heart is fully committed. “So let each one give as he
purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity;
for God loves a cheerful giver.”
4) Open Your Eyes to the Opportunities around You.
There is no shortage of ministry opportunities, only
ministers willing to undertake those opportunities. Jesus told
His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are
few. Therefore, pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers
into His harvest.” 10
5) Don’t be Afraid to Venture into the Areas of Your
Weaknesses. God is looking for Availability, not Capability.
“For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise
according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are
called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put
to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the

world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base
things of the world and the things which are despised God has
chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the
things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence.
But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom
from God—and righteousness and sanctification and
redemption—that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him
glory in the Lord.” 11
6) Follow Your Heart. This is an area of our character that can
often get us into trouble. But the compass of your heart is
True when it is directed by God. “Delight yourself also in the
Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit
your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring
it to pass.” 12
7) Seek Ministry Partners. There is much strength in the
Pattern of Pairs. “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens
the countenance of his friend.” 13 Again we read, “Two are
better than one, because they have a good reward for their
labour. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe
to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help
him up.” 14

8) Look for Divine Confirmation. Think of Gamaliel’s test

concerning the ministry of the disciples. “And now I say to
you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this
plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is
of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight
against God.” 15
9) Stand Firm in Your Calling. Stand firm, even when others
may doubt or try to destroy your service to God. You will
not be the first person to endure the questioning of others.
“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the
believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in
purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation,
to doctrine. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was
given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of
the eldership. Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely
to them, that your progress may be evident to all. Take heed to
yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing
this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” 16
10) Try to be Transparent. Be a Reflector not a Collector.
In other words, can you serve unnoticed? After all, if you
are serving the Lord then His approval should be your only
concern. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on
a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it
under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who
are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they
may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” 17
11) Avoid the Pursuit of Power. Follow the example of John, the
cousin of Jesus. “John answered and said, “A man can receive
nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.
You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’
but, ‘I have been sent before Him.’ He who has the bride is the
bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and
hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice.

Therefore, this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase, but I

must decrease.” 18
Consider the confessions of Paul. At the height of his
ministry he says, “I am the least of the apostles, who am
not worthy to be called an apostle.” 19 Yet, at the end of his
ministry he declares, “This is a faithful saying and worthy of all
acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners,
of whom I am chief.” 20
12) Give until it’s Gone. The nation of Israel was issued an
interesting challenge by God. “Bring all the tithes into the
storehouse, that there may be food in My house, And try Me now
in this,” Says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the
windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there
will not be room enough to receive it.” 21 Said another way,
you cannot out-give God.
Ultimately, I believe Paul sums up the right attitude regarding our service
before God. “I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the
time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished
the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that
Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” 22

It’s just a “raw fact” that they exist.

How they got there is another
question altogether. None of us were
around to see their origin. We just
observe them existing in the present.
As I mentioned, all facts must be
interpreted in order to give them
any kind of significant meaning. The
way we interpret facts, however, is by
using our existing worldview.
What’s a worldview? It’s basically
a set of beliefs and assumptions
(presupposed to be true) that we use
to make sense of the world around us.
Because we use our own worldview
to interpret “facts,” we will naturally
tend to interpret things in such a
way as to be consistent with what
we already believe to be true. Because of this phenomenon, the key in
any discussion between a skeptic and a Christian is not so much the
“facts” but the validity of the worldview being used to interpret those
facts. You would certainly agree that if your beginning assumptions are
wrong, you will almost always come to the wrong conclusion about
whatever it is you are contemplating.
Another way of looking at all of this is that this concerns the idea
of an “ultimate authority.” For Christians, the ultimate authority
is Scripture. Logically, if God

we like it or not and whether we
understand it or not. It’s the ultimate authority for all we think and
do. Whenever an issue arises, whether it’s a question of same-sex
marriage, abortion, transgenderism, etc., our first response should
be to ask ourselves, “What does God’s Word have to say about this?”
If someone else states they believe two men should be able to get married,
you can ask them, “How did you come to that conclusion? What source
of authority are you appealing to in order to justify your opinion?”
In many cases they will respond by saying something like, “Well, I think
they have a right to do so.” In this case, they are simply conveying what
they think is fair based on their own reasoning. At this point (considering
same-sex marriage), the skeptic’s “ultimate authority” becomes their
own reasoning. The next two questions should be: “how do you know
you can trust your reasoning? And “why should others adhere to your
reasoning and not just use their own thoughts or some other standard?”
As Christians, we should not simply be sharing “our opinion” and
expecting everyone else to bow to our moral superiority, but rather,
pointing others to something that can be defended as being a true
“Ultimate Authority.” We should further let the skeptic know that if
they take issue with what we are saying, they really don’t have an issue
with us directly but with the Word of God.
This all leads to an obvious question… how do we know the Bible is
truly the inspired, inerrant Word of God? It’s a great question, and
unfortunately, it is one that too many Christians can’t answer.
Why are you a Christian?
Because I believe the Bible.
Why do you believe the Bible?
Because I’m a Christian!

When further pressed as to how they actually know the Bible is from
God, many respond by stating: they just know it is, they feel it is, they
just believe it is, it works for them, etc. These answers really aren’t reasons
and certainly aren’t reasons anyone else should believe in, including our
own children (and many Christian youth walk away from their faith,
because they are ill-prepared to defend the “set of beliefs” they are handed
by their parents or pastor).
I have an entire presentation in which I answer this question directly,
going into multiple lines of evidence that very powerfully show the

Bible is exactly what it claims to be… the Word of God who not only
created the entire universe but has a plan for our lives, both now and
for the future. Discussing these evidences is always eye-opening and
encouraging to Christians, strengthening their faith greatly. However,
it can also be a bit discouraging. Here’s what I mean. While they are
generally encouraged hearing that all this great evidence exists, they feel
they could never remember much of it in order to effectively defend
their faith when confronted by a skeptic.
Here’s the good news… there’s an even better way of defending your
faith, and it doesn’t require memorizing a lot of technical facts or having
advanced degrees in physics or Greek and Hebrew.
In this brief article, I will not have time to develop this in any depth.
I will only be able to describe it in general terms and point you to a
resource for further detail.
This is how it works in general. Everyone starts somewhere with their
beliefs. It’s impossible not to. We call this our starting point or our
presuppositions. These are things that can’t really be proven. If they
could be proven, they would not be your starting point… whatever you
used to “prove” them would be. For example, if you said idea “A” is your
starting point, but you believe “A” because of “B,” you are really starting
with the assumption that “B” is true, in order to prove or defend belief
in “A.” (Might sound complex, but it’s really not.)
Since starting points (or presuppositions) can’t be proven, we don’t
attempt to prove them, but simply “take them out for a test drive” to
see how well they work when trying to explain the real world around
us. Jumping to the punchline (skipping the very interesting details for
now), when we do this (i.e., take various worldviews for a “test drive”),
we find out that unless a person starts with the Christian worldview
(that God exists and the Bible is His inspired Word), not only can you
not make sense of the most fundamental things in the world around us,
but you technically can’t actually prove anything!
This might sound strange, but only the Christian worldview gives
us a true basis for things like why logic exists, why there is so much
consistency in the physical universe that science is even possible, why

“information” exists, or why there is something such as absolute morality.
I will be speaking on this topic at the Strategic Perspectives Conference

Day 2: Wednesday - 18 January 2017 - Addis-Axum (fly)

In the morning you shall catch a flight to Axum. The legends narrated
in the Kebre Nagast “Book of Kings” recount how the city of Axum as
early as the 10th century B.C. was the city in which the Queen of Sheba
resided. It is recounted that the son of the Queen of Sheba and King
Solomon brought the Ark of the Covenant to Axum and it remains there
to this day, preserved in a sanctuary. Famous long before the time of
Christ, Axum was the capital of the long Axumite reign, one of the oldest
African empires, and represented a crucial connecting-point between
Africa and Asia for almost a thousand years. A visit is organized to the
steles, granite monoliths dating from pre-Christian times and decorated
with symbolic engravings, and other archeological sites. In the evening
you shall get the chance to participate in the evening program of the
Timkat festival.
Day 3: Thursday - 19 January 2017 - Axum

In the morning we will attend the Timkat festival. In the afternoon there
is also a visit to the church of Santa Maria of Zion, which contains the
crowns of Ethiopian kings and other treasures.
Day 4: Friday - 20 January 2017 - Axum-Lalibela (fly)

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport to catch your flight
to Lalibela. The city is located at 2,600 meters above sea level. It contains
11 monolithic churches that were built in the twelfth century and are
carved out of the pink granite rock; they have been classified as one of the
wonders of the world. Each church has a unique architectural style; all
are superbly carved and most of them are decorated with well-preserved
paintings. The entire city may be described as a sculpture dedicated to
the glory of God. Upon arrival you will visit the Monastery of Nakuto
Leab named after its constructor, the nephew and successor of King
Lalibela. The rest of the day will be dedicated to visit the 1st and 2nd
group of the rock hewn churches and exploring the city itself.
Day 5: Saturday - 21 January 2017 - Lalibela-Gondar (fly)

After breakfast you shall be transferred to the airport to catch your
flight to Gondar. Gondar was the first capital city of the Ethiopian
empire, which began in 1632 with the reign of Fasilidas. It is set in a
landscape of incomparable beauty. We will visit the castle, one of the
most marvelous buildings built by Emperor Fasilidas and his descendant.
Later we proceed to the fascinating Debre Birhan Selassie church (termed
by UNESCO as one of the World’s heritages), its walls and ceilings
decorated with scenes of Biblical lore and medieval history shows the
religious art of the Gonderian period.

Day 6: Sunday - 22 January 2017 - Gondar - Bahir Dar

After breakfast you shall drive to Bahir Dar which is a pleasant city
located at 1,800 meters above sea level on the shores of Lake Tana,
the largest lake in Ethiopia. There are 37 islands on Lake Tana and 30
of them have churches and monasteries of considerable historical and
cultural interest.
In the afternoon you shall drive directly to Blue Nile Falls, which is
known locally as Tissat Falls: 100 meters wide, the water plunges for 45
meters, giving rise to steam clouds and rainbows. (It's about a 1hr walk
to the falls and another 1hr to return back to the point of departure
via the Portuguese bridge). We shall return back to the city for sunset.
Overnight stay at the Kuriftu Resort or a hotel of similar standard.
Day 7: Monday - 23 January 2017 - Bahir Dar

The day will be dedicated to a full day boat trip on the lake to explore
some of the islands; there is a visit to the Zege peninsula for its famous
14th century monasteries, including Tana Kirkos, for their wonderful
16th century mural paintings, crowns, crosses and many old church
treasures. Overnight stay in the Kuriftu resort or a hotel of similar standard.
Day 8: Tuesday - 24 January 2017 - Bahir Dar-Addis (fly)

After a relaxed breakfast at your hotel you will be transferred to the
airport to catch your flight to Addis. In the afternoon you will have
time to explore more of the capital and maybe do some shopping. In the
evening, there is a farewell traditional dinner where you will experience
live cultural music and dance. Your tour concludes by being dropped
off at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa by Jacaranda staff to
catch your flight home.
